I’m really glad you found that funny because for me it was a nightmare not just for me, but for my family who saw me her up to go to a bathroom after eating mashed potatoes. It was embarrassing when our with friends, I made up excuses to run to the bathroom. It is not the worst case scenario, didn’t get heart burn, or indigestion. I could not even have Water sometimes without being ill.

When I took the band out, i was left with lots of scar tissue.

I don’t slap down food with a fork either as suggested and in fact, I am quite healthy and fit. My BMI wasn’t as big as most peoples when I got the band to begin with.

I’m glad you had success with yours and I wish I could have had the same, but thats your story not mine. So please don’t criticise me and perhaps stop for a moment and consider other people stories here who share the same as me.

    Hi

(I posted this is post op questions by accident but wondered if I should put this here..)

I’m a 43 year old female who weighs 75kg. I am 158cm tall and I had a gastric sleeve done in June 2017.

I am apparently one of the few who has not lost a single kilo since my surgery. In fact, I was at 69kg when I got it done so if anything, I’ve put on 6kg since.

My doctor has offered me a gastric bypass which I have accepted and booked in.

I have a really sweet tooth which is my biggest issue. I just can’t stop.

Just wondering, what is it really like to have a sweet tooth then suddenly get a bypass? If you had your chance, would you have gotten it or is this one of your biggest regrets?

Please do not criticise me because you feel I am not heavy enough. I’m not here because I need someone to judge me.

Everyone else, I can’t wait to hear from you.
    Regards

Hi Lindy, I have actually done that before via a diet called Keto. It’s quite successful and yes, the withdrawals are crazy and the Migraines even worse.

    It is def worth it.

So..... I had my bypass on 10 July everyone. It’s the 27th of July and I’m still in hospital. A day after surgery, I had major tummy pain. All obs were done however, nobody picked anything up because everything (blood pressure, ecg, oxygen etc) were normal. So after 3 Medical Emergency Team calls at my bedside, fainting, bed hopping in between ICU and normal wards, it turned out I had leaky gut. So in for surgery I went again. I came out with drains, nose time down to my stomach and loads of everything else into my arm. I have a pick line which all my meds go through and been fed nutrients the same way. If anyone is un familiar with a pick line, it is a mega canula that goes to the main artery above your heart. I have been nil by mouth for 2.5 of the 3 weeks I’ve been here. And guess what. I put 8kg on in a single week of Fluid. Then I lost it. And yup. It sure as hell went that I didn’t not lose any weight doing that either. Lol. No food the whole time and i lost nothing. I have to say this though, the reason I didn’t show any signs in the obs was because I was so healthy. Losing weight at this stage is the last thing on my mind. I need to get healthy again to be able to lose weight properly and not be because I am sick. I am more appreciative of carrying that little bit extra because it got me through. Basically, even. The doctors were very concerned. I’ll be here a while still however I appreciate my body so much more than I ever have.

Yay! Thank you for replying. I thought I was the first person in history not have lost weight cause everyone else seems to be a success story. Depressing! The day I had my gastric sleeve surgery I was hungry. I mean starving. Now I’m starving all the time, even when I’m full. Oh. And now I have heart burn which I’ve never had in my life. I can’t explain it. So to hear your story I am grateful for your reply.

Please keep me posted. I’d love to hear on how you go as opposed to how you were before with the sleeve. Were you like me when you had the sleeve?? I hope to lose the hunger as you have said when I get mine? Gosh. I’m still even deciding if I should.

Sleeved36. I take what you have said on board. I don’t really want to do this surgery however it’s how you feel in your skin. I’m trying again as we speak. Thank you for your feedback. I’m not taking it as a negative, I’m looking for responses with people who have had this surgery. :)

Bajansleeve, thank you. I think no matter what size one is at, there are those insecurities and you’re right, there is that aha moment. And I’m there. I have 13kg to lose and I just need to do it. The doctor believes I have a hormone imbalance. I think he did the surgery and thought, ‘hmm she’s not big enough’ and took less out. It’s left me with chronic GERD which I’ve never had. I don’t even have to eat anything to get it and it comes on strong when I don’t eat or feel hungry. That hunger comes back 20 mins after I’ve eaten a full meal and I try discipline myself but then cave in. Together with doing 14 hour shifts and I’m quite active at work, my habits will always change. And not for the better. So yes. That calorie allowance can go out the window. Oh. And I can eat a full meal like everyone else. Where’s my sleeve? Lol.
I hope things are working the way you want them too. Again, thank you.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I’ve read every single one and taken into account all of your responses, advice and concerns.

I feel like this GERD isn’t something I’ve looked into prior so I’m
Going to see the doctor. Heavy GERD meds don’t achieve anything for me. Wow could this be it!!! I don’t even have to eat to have it really bad.

I think being able to recognise where I’m going wrong helps. Anyhow I’ll keep you all posted xx

If you have uncontrolled GERD (and medication has been tried but isn't managing it), it might be the GERD making you feel that you are hungry again so soon after eating? stomach acid can feel like hunger, and eating more can temporarily make it feel better again. The GERD would also be a reasonable reason to convert to bypass even with the lower BMI, but you would have to then be even more meticulous with your Vitamins and foods because of the malabsorption post surgery. That you can eat a full regular-sized meal post sleeve is a concern. Have you had a scan done to check the size/shape of your sleeve? you are now 1 year post op, most people have reported only being able to eat about a cup of food at a time by this point.

@Saddy I commend you for being honest. I was in denial about my morbid obesity for years. It was only when I had that ah ha moment coupled with some dangerous health issues that I understood my life was in danger and so I began to change my eating habits. I started counselling. After changing my habits, I decided to do WLS.
I personally believe that until you get to the root issues of why we run to food, sweets, junk food to comfort or emotionally support us, no amount of WLS procedure is going to 'cure' us. Something has to switch in your brain FIRST otherwise you will just go back to the same cycles and habits.
If you are able to find a bariatric therapist I think it would really benefit you before you commit to another surgical procedure. I have always been weak with self discipline in the area of food and I am only now, at 48 years old, realizing that there comes a time when you just have to tell yourself no and not give yourself everything you want whenever you want it.
Its easy to eat 1200 to 1500 calories a day if you are eating chocolate bars, sweeties, ice-cream, gummies, etc. even on a reduced stomach size.
I hope you find encouragement to keep on going deeper and support in your journey to get HEALTHY and not just loose weight. Cheering for you

I too had a revision from sleee to bypass (due to GERD & not losing weight).
i truly don’t feel hungry now but I am almost 6 weeks post op. When I see something delicious or what I use to eat before, I crave it for that moment but when it’s out of sight, my craving goes away. I am still on soft Foods so I can’t speak much about eating.
Some of those with bypass have dumping syndrome when they eat an abundance of sugar which is positive for some because they no longer want to feel that pain/discomfort again so they stay away from sugar; same for greasy/Fatty/fries Foods I believe

There is a difference between not losing weight and those that lost weight with a sleeve and regained.
If your main problem was eating around the surgery to begin with, how do you feel bypass will be different for you? You stated you have a sweet tooth and you cannot stop. If you were not losing weight with a sleeve due to eating the wrong foods and overeating, what has changed?
It is a common misconception that you will dump with gastric bypass. It is not a given. My surgeon told me only 30-50 percent of patients will dump, and this effect lessens as a bypass matures for many that do have dumping. If you are counting on dumping syndrome to keep your eating under control, you may be making a huge mistake.
Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Hi there I have to agree with the last poster, I had alot of hidden sugars in my diet that one had to work REALLY HARD to eliminate LONG before I even considered surgery. I actually stopped using sugar to start and then stopped eating foods that contained high amounts of non naturally occurring sugars then limiting those for special occasions. I Gave up juice completely. Doing that automatically stimulates a small reduction in weight and the need to always eat sweet foods. Sugar has been studied and found to have similar addictive properties as narcotics. It stimulates the pleasure center of the brain which does not sound bad unless you become dependant on the stimulus. You may need to detox to ensure the best possible outcome. Safe journey.

Saddy, it's Frustr8 here, also getting a bypass about your time, although I'm an original not a revision. Are you sure you have hunger and not just gastritis and excess acid and possible ulcer.?
A little about me, I have been fighting the GERD war for awhile, went from PPI to next. About 6 months ago, give or take, my symptoms amped up. Now my gall bladder has been gone for 34 34 years but that was the general area I was having pain. I am a dabbler on the edges of medicine and I also have a fervent imagination So what do you I rationalize about right subcostal pain ? Errant gall bladder tissue they didn't remove, maybe I have gallstones blocking pancreatic ducts, a Ghrelinoma, mind you I don't even know if there is such a thing?. gastric carcinoma, or as my late MIL threatened , my fat strangling my intestines? At that moment I was peeved at my PCP, the great steroid prescribed,he thinks medrol will cure the world of all its ills, I just think it makes me FATTER. So I hiked myself off to the gastroenterologist, why go to,the hmmm level? Lets fire the big guns. After changing PpL once again, now I'm on Dexilant, the Ferrari of Ppl and I go through an EGD which shows I have active gastritis and gives me a little birth announcement, I am the unwilling stepmother to Hector my teeny tiny stiil-sleeping gastric ulcer. The good news, Hector is not caused by H pylori, he is from excessive amount of ibuprofen, which had chewed through the protective mucous lining and into business area, the stomach wall. Nd we,must, keep Vector peacefully slumbering so b he does not perforate and dausevall kinds of trouble. Hence the, pain
Goodbye coffee, spices peppermint, skipping meals and of course NSAIDS. There is my story and hi hope it helps a little.

I too have an uncontrollable sweet tooth. I had a RNY a month ago. I constantly have to over come the temptation to not eat sugar!
I have to to remind myself “Nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels!” It’s my new mantra.
I’m just tired of being chubby. I can feel my body getting worse from extra weight. I want to feel better, I wanna get out and do things! I’m tired of sitting on the couch!
I guess you have to get to that point yourself & decide what is important to you. Maybe your not ready to make that big of a change.

Dumping syndrome will not change a food/sweets addiction anymore than a hangover prevents alcoholism.
The problem is mental, but can be overcome with help.
Do the surgery if you want to, but combine it with therapy or another form of support. It will help to ensure your success.

I hoped to have dumping bc of bypass. Honestly I’ve had dumping symptoms due to fast food too. If dumping is a result of eating things you shouldn’t, it prevents you from doing it again. Which for me was a huge positive. Let’s be honest, there’s absolutely no reason to eat sweets or junk food. I’ve cut out so much significantly. I’ve never heard of someone being hospitalized due to dumping. I guess you could go but not much they can do for you. I’ve never thrown up due to dumping but learned my lesson pretty quickly. It keeps me from trying others so that’s good for me. Dumping sucks but it keeps me on track. I still have to hold my self accountable as it doesn’t do it for everything.

Converting to bypass may lead to some initial weight loss due to the malabsorption it causes. And you may have dumping which will deter you from sweets. But honestly, have you looked into therapy for food addition? As it is said over and over, WLS is only tool, we need to relearn our eating habits. You really need to find a way to break your sugar compulsion if you want long term success.

I necessarily didn’t have a sweet tooth like yourself. I ate relatively healthy and indulged maybe once a week with a cheat meal. I was also really active (hiked a lot) but I just didn’t lose. I didn’t believe I even had the surgery until I had an upper GI done. I could eat more than another with the sleeve could. I just never felt satisfied. My heartburn was so bad that taking a sip of Water in the morning Made me uncomfortable. I didn’t have any ulcers or anything either
