    How long off work/disability?

    I would think that is plenty of time. I had 3 weeks off. I was tired my first 3 weeks back to work, but I managed it by only doing the bare necessities outside of work those first 3 weeks back to work and of course getting a good night's sleep every night.

    Welcome Francine2! Glad to hear you are doing well! My husband is having an umbilical hernia repaired 7/3. He was sleeved in 2010. No GERD or revision needed though. Phew!

    I can't imagine any medical professional using anything but titanium for a body part. I would expect anything less inert would corrode with all the stomach acid. Aluminum would be too soft I would think. Here's what I found online: " Staples are usually made of Titanium. Human body does not respond to this metal, that's why most of the prosthetic organs are also from this metal. They do not disolve, also they don't set off metal detectors and are ok to go through MRI. Therefore very safe. The body heals over them after 4-6 weeks... H.     Tips on breaking the sugar addiction

    Ugh! Sugar addiction is the worst! I have struggled SO MUCH with this! Prior to surgery, for about a year I had made a "No desserts" policy for myself. (with the exception of a piece of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving!) I just could NOT eat sweets and desserts in any sort of normal way. Everyone's solution is different. I have started to have very small servings of dessert the past 2-3 weeks. I have had a few bites of ice cream mainly. I discovered how horrible cake made me feel! Oy! I had half of a wafer of one side of an Oreo thin (not the inside stuff). One day I had a few M and M's. I dunno...I'm thinking about whether I should continue to stick to my no sweets policy (or re-commit at this point!) or if I should see if I can do sweets in moderation post surgery.

    Weekends Are Hard

    I would be curious about what is behind eating more than your probably should...Are you hungry? Is it emotional eating? Are you craving certain foods? Whatever the problem, I would try to find a different solution. Hunger, in my experience, has usually meant I need to get more protein or water. Emotional eating means I need to use different tools other than food to help me with whatevr uncomfortable emotion I'm having. Usually I can distract myself from cravings. Your answers will be unique to you, but feel free to brainstorm here if that's helpful! I came to this forum for help about eating too much when eating out. SO MUCH experience with everyone here. It's really helpful, and I hope you are able to figure out this challenge, acuttita.

    My eyebrows are falling out!?!

    Yowza! My eyebrows are light in color, so most days I use a product like mascara to darken them up a bit. If I lost them, that would really be something! I'd be calling my clinic, I think.

    Hardest Part (outside of eating)

    What a great topic. I struggle with eating beyond my comfort zone when eating out. Fortunately I don't really need to go out much. Next time I go, I'm going to try asking for a to go box be delivered with my meal so that I can eyeball the portion I'll eat and pack up the rest to be leftovers. No endless picking until I feel painfully full. Early on when I returned to work I realized I was stress eating. I recognized what I was doing midway with a veggie straw to my lips. I was bound and determined not to let stress eating sabotage me, so I revamped my self care: journaling, meditation, activity/exercise (a real mood ad energy booster for me), therapy, and for awhile I was doing massage every 3 weeks.

  12. I would agree with Bariatric Hero that it's important that you like your surgeon. I think it could affect your recovery. You don't see him or her all that much, but having a bad vibe...ugh! You are VERY vulnerable during surgery! I could have hugged my surgeon when he told me his views about how determined patients are who keep trying to lose weight despite the lack of long term success, that they are the MOST determined in light of continuing to try despite proof that it doesn't work. Our scheduled consult time was 40 minutes, but I could have picked his brain for longer than the 75 minutes he seemed to happily spend with me. He shared a lot about the most recent research which was informative and thought provoking. I had a list of questions prepared prior to my consult. Good luck!
  13. I felt better (more at ease being prepared) having supplies on hand ahead of time. Turns out this was very helpful in light of the fact that despite having my surgery 4/12/18 in Minneapolis, we had a MAJOR snowstorm on my post op day 2 and 3. Because we were unable to leave our driveway due to heavy snow, my poor husband walked to the pharmacy to pick up glycerin suppositories for me (TMI, I know!). The other thing I wished I would have had on hand before surgery was the Tylenol dosage they recommended post op. I stock 500mg at our house, not 325mg tablets. That was another thing for my hubby to have to track down. Of course your surgeon may prescribe something completely different for post op pain. I had stocked my cupboards with clear liquids and full liquids ahead of time. I brought home from the hospital 4 of the tiny cups they put pills in and used that to measure my water intake the first day and a half. I would put 4 on a plate and know I needed to get those 4 cups down in the next hour. After the first day and a half, I didn't need the tiny cups as I was much more able to drink plenty of water. I also am glad I had 1/4 cup reusable plastic food storage containers for my pureed stage, but also even now, it helps with packing my lunches. For the pureed stage it was helpful because a little food covers many meals. It is super important to have a source of protein (liquid) prior to surgery that you know you can tolerate, if not enjoy. And a way to make your purees. You got this!!!
  14. Minneapolis is such a smaller community with fewer options. Word of mouth and looking at online reviews is how I made my decision. Good luck and you are wise to be so thoughtful and planful with your decision in my opinion.
  15. Yes, exactly. The hospital, I'm guessing has them on hand for a variety of abdominal surgeries. It helps with comfort. Nobody mentioned it ahead of time. You are way ahead of the game! Woot! Woot!

    Goals

    I'm also 5' 5". I set my goal at 150, but in all honesty, I will be thrilled with anything 170 or below. I set my goal at 150 because that's a BMI below 25 (or right at 25, I forget). I think more important is how do you feel and what can you reasonably maintain. Sometimes people can look gaunt at a supposedly healthy BMI. I think a lot of it depends on your frame and body composition (fat vs muscle). Congratulations!
  17. When I woke up from surgery I was wearing an elasticized abdominal binder that velcroed around my abdomen. Approximately 12 inches from top to bottom. I found it very useful the first week.

    2 years out

    At our clinic support group meetings, they encourage people to come back if they are struggling with weight regain after surgery. They have mentioned using medications to help with this. This is my biggest fear- weight regain, askeens86. Congratulations on your baby! Pregnancy and motherhood can truly be a challenge for somebody with issues with eating and weight. I speak from experience!

  21. It's true that your eating changes. I suspect that whether the sacrifices are worth it depends on how badly you want to get rid of your excess weight. In the long run there are very few things you can NEVER have. (Pop/carbonation?) BTW, I noticed you are from Minnesota like me. My husband had a VSG by your surgeon about 8 years ago. Nice guy and did a great job for my hubby! Good luck!

    Ready to workout.

    I was cleared for more than walking at one month, including strength training. I was told to expect to need Tylenol and an ice pack and eat a serving of protein afterwards, I think I did need Tylenol the first time or two but was fine overall. Good luck!
