  1. I'm 3 weeks post-op today.

I was thinking that how come this is taking so long to get to goal. Then I realized I have been obese for most of my 63 years, so my steady progress is very exciting.

I was 333.8 lbs today down 30.2 lbs since starting liquid diet and 23.4 lbs since surgery.

So far my only problem has been food portions. I eat/chew very slowly and only put 3-4 oz on my plate. I really can't tell if I am full till it is too late. I'm thinking I should just eat 2-3 oz at a time to avoid that horrible full, bloating feeling. What have been your experiences?

  2. I’m still pre-op as of now. I have my last of the required 4 month nutritionist visit by my insurance company next week and then my team will submit to my insurance for approval, I am seeing Dr. Larson at JFK Bariatric Center. I like the program that they offer and they are a great team as well, I’m hoping to have surgery in August, getting very excited so I’m reading as much as I can trying to prepare myself.
You are the first person that I came across so far on the site from the south Florida area. Keep up the good work!!
Hope your insurance approval goes smoothly. Unfortunately I was self play, so the process went really fast.

Congratulations Mitch! Glad to hear that your first week is going well.

By the way, I'm your neighbor, I live in Delray Beach.

Keep up the good work :)

    Hello neighbor.

Where did you have your surgery?

I used Dr Podolsky at Delray Medical Center.

Having a great experience with her team.

  4. Hi everyone!
This is my first post here and I am wondering if y'all have any recommendations for full liquid items. I am really struggling to make it through this stage. I have my Protein Shakes, but I'm already getting sick of those. Also, how am I supposed to get in 60g of Protein PLUS 64oz of Water each day, when my sleeve is only able to hold so much? I feel like I'm not getting enough of either each day. Did anyone else struggle to get their required intake?
So if you have any recommendations for full liquid items that you enjoy and any advice for this stage, I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Maggie

    Each program is different.
That said my program is 64oz liquid which
includes Protein snakes. Also I can have ricotta or cottage cheese. I am 6 days out and seeing too get everything in.

  5. Not much to report at this juncture of the journey; I have plateaued as far as the doctor supervised diet and weight loss is concerned. I have only managed to lose 2lbs this month, compared to the 14lbs prior to last months doctors visit. Diet wise I have made no changes, although I could stand to lose the popcorn habit... that addiction seems to be the hardest to shake. Popcorn on Friday; popcorn if I go to the movies, popcorn! popcorn!! popcorn!!!
My next supervised doctor weigh-in visit is this Friday the 6th of July 2018 (For archival). This will be my 6th visit of the insurance required 7. I will have to work with my doctor to modify the final visit to come in under the 180-day limit per the insurance requirements. That should not be a problem though.
You know, I was dead set against this insurance requirement of a 180 weigh-in period. But I have to say, it is giving the much needed time to get a jump on the lifestyle changes that I will need to make anyway. It has also helped me to lower my set point, so that I am just that much closer to a much healthier goal weight.
As I get closer, I am going to start getting acclimated to a more liquid diet. Since I will more than likely be put on a liquid diet phase prior to surgery, I might as well start the search for the liquids I could stomach (stand) for 2 to 3 weeks prior to surgery...
I am shocked by how many people just do not get it; I am on a couple fakebook (facebook) groups, and I am shocked at the questions that some surgery recipients ask prior and after surgery:
1: How soon after surgery before I can start smoking pot again...? Some patients even gave timeline answers as to when... what!?! Try never, you should never smoke pot again.
    Along those same lines:
2: I am still smoking cigs, and my surgery is in a week... will they deny my surgery? They should is all I can say, as you are just not getting it...
3: A favorite here, this was asked just last week: "What would you do for a Klondike bar?" I do not get why some people look for dietary supplements for the crap foods that got them here in the first place. That is still food addiction, and if you do not get rid of the cravings and the addiction, you could be dooming yourself to failure.
Am I the expert? No, not by a long shot. Giving up the cravings is a real b*tch. My birthday was two weeks ago, and when asked what kind of cake I wanted, I said none. What I wanted was a small fruit cup with strawberries, grapes, pineapple, cantaloupe, and honey dew. My mother, who is a 10-vet of gastric by-pass, could not believe that I did not want cake to celebrate... Well, that in itself speaks volumes as to why she is regaining her weight. Celebratory foods was one of the addictions I had to break: Yeah it's Friday. time for chili conqueso, it's Saturday time for Pizza! It's your birthday, time for cake and ice cream! Celebration foods, mood foods, and treats etc. I had to stop rewarding myself every time with food. A very nasty habit to break. Although I do not currently have these addictions, I am still actively searching for ways to offset the cravings... gum really helps!
Anyway, still marching on ward. It has been tough, rewarding, and time has literally flown by. I will report after this months doctor visit.
    Life is good!
All your comments got the mark.

  6. Hey everyone! My surgery went well but it was so late when I was finally transferred to my room that I was too tired to check in. I had some nausea but I was given injections to stop that. No hernia repairs. Had a little suffering to do about peeing. Had to be so bad but my bladder was still asleep, didn’t get to relieve it until about 3am. I’m doing well though. Haven’t got to do too much walking yet. Will keep you posted
Glad to hear you are ok. It keeps getting better.

  7. Hello everyone, this is my first time here or any kind of support group for this major step in my life. My surgery is in 8 days! I have found a lot of resistance and negative comments when I talk about it at work or even family. They tell me "just stop eating junk and exercise." Just don't eat too much, don't take the easy way out." A lot of co-workers and friends and even my husband tell me not to do it...But I have tried everything already, this is my last option...just to become healthy and be able to have a normal life again.
Please give me some hints that I can use to get me through this last week and the strict diet I have to follow. I am having a hard time in thinking I won't be able to follow this diet of just liquids for a whole 7 days!...when I'm so use to steak, chicken Etc...
Also what do I tell this people with this type of comments and how do I keep the negativity away?
It just blows my mind that people are so negative on WLS
. I also have surgery in 8 days, June 26.
Everyone supports my decision to get the sleeve. Friends, family, and co workers can't wait till I get healthy.
If anyone was negative I would just ignore them. My wife is my support system. She made goal on weight watchers and will be right by me on this new journey.
    HANG IN THERE.
    This is for you.

  8. At 402 lbs and 5 foot 9... you should qualify for the surgery though (most) insurances... not sure what insurance you have... but I've never heard of any insurance not covering at least some of WLS with a BMI of 59.4... You are actually off most of the BMI charts... and are classified as "Super Obese" bordering on "Hyper Obese".... there isn't anything over "Hyper Obese"....

That said, you might be too big to get Sleeved, have you considered or discussed Bypass surgery with your insurance/Doctors/etc?
My insurance has a whole section in the employee handbook that excludes WLS and any expenses related to weight loss. There's no way to fight that.

  9. My surgery date is June 26 for the Sleeve.

Just had my cardiac clearance today.

All that is left is clearance from my PCP and a pre-op education class.

My first appointment with the surgeon was April 18.

I am cash pay so this process has gone really fast.

My PCP has wanted me to do the sleeve for years, but I thought I could do this myself. The orthopedic doctors said I needed back surgery and both knees replaced. After doing some research I found out that while the surgeries could be successful, I would not have a positive outcome unless I lost a lot of weight. Made an appointment with the surgeon the next day and am looking forward to getting my life back.

My wife is my biggest supporter and I hope to match her success. She made her goal weight at weight watchers a few months ago and tho it will take me a little while, I will join her.
