Surgery Tomorrow, Feeling Anxious About Weird Things
Tomorrow’s the day! I feel like it snuck up on me. I’ve spent the past 2 weeks taking care of my husband that I hardly noticed the time passing. As I prepare for tomorrow, I can’t help but feel like I am not prepared. Even though I’ve probably purchased more things than necessary... I have 4 different soups prepared and frozen (I kid you not I’ve had my crockpots going for over 24 hours to make the bone broths and chicken stocks!) enough premier protein for the next several weeks, and several other brands/flavors in case the premier is a bust due to post-surgical changes. I’ve got Greek yogurt a-plenty, fairlife milk and almond milk. And I’ve spent all weekend in the kitchen cooking up meal after meal for the fam so I can have a full week to recover before the mom/wife duties resume... I’ve got a ton of mini-plates (I have a collection now. I tend to collect oddities. I have a huge collection of coffee mugs, and now my obsession is decorative mini plates. I have issues LOL). I’ve got the spoons, forks, a plethora of different vitamins because damn chewables are gross. I even purchased a pillow wedge, toilet seat raiser, squatty potty, the colace/miralax/MoM/other various pooping aides... Despite having what seems like an arsenal of items, I feel so underprepared. I guess my anxiety is rearing it’s head. I don’t feel nervous about the surgery itself, I feel nervous that I’m forgetting something important. Anyone else feel like they had nonsensical worries before their surgery? The normal worries, complications in surgery, possible injury, or even non succeeding with the tool don’t plague me at all. Instead I’m paranoid that I don’t have enough plates, or that my protein powder will run out (even though realistically I probably have enough to last me a good 3 months straight) or that I won’t be able to take those terrible vitamins. Slap some advice or tough love on me! I need some help getting out of my own head!

Some Advice Please!
Hi Everyone, Thanks for checking in! My hubs is doing GREAT! Well, he's getting on my nerves because he is home and bored and whining. LOL. His recovery has actually been easy. The first few days were chaotic as he needed help with a lot of things, but he is completely independent minus the driving. He feels much better and is not handling the "being cooped up at home unable to drive anywhere" stage of this recovery very well. I think its actually a good thing I will be going for my surgery since it will mean I am off for the next few weeks with him and he won't be as lonely. So yes, my surgery is still a GO! I go in at 2pm on Monday

Pre-Op weight loss improves WLS outcomes
^^ this is very important. I notice that pre-op, if my calories fall below 1300 my weight STALLS hardcore. If I manage to get 1500-1600 I lose quicker. My metabolism is shot. It’s one of the reasons both my doctor and I believe my weight loss will be on the slower side and so I’ve mentally prepared myself for a cross country race to the healthy line instead of a sprint

Same! It terrifies me. I know it's the golden standard, but figured that since I don't have the co-morbidities that the RnY specifically addresses, the sleeve was enough for me.

Out With the Old--In With the New!
The mass wine... My daughter just received her 1st communion last weekend and was very upset that I wouldn't drink "the blood" with her (they give kids sparkling cider). She said "Don't worry mom, it's decaff!". I couldn't help but laugh. I was very vocal in my dismay that I had to give up caffeinated coffee (although now that I've done it, I am happy with my decaff) and when I said I couldn't drink wine, I think she assumed it was for the same reason.

Never been more excited!
SO happy for you! Glad you are doing better

Out With the Old--In With the New!
I love wine <3. In fairness, I don't drink often, and its uncommon for me to have more than a glass in one sitting but my doc says no booze for 1 year. I'm going to miss a nice glass of white wine in the summer

Bariatric haul! What have you bought for your journey or plan to buy?

I drink about 120oz of water at least. Some days 100oz, but I am a huge water drinker.

Nervous
Hi Caramel, this surgery is a big decision. I am scheduled the day before you [emoji4] The post op diet is a way of life. It definitely takes commitment. But your not giving up good food, it’s really opening a whole new way to eat. Yes the first few weeks are rough with the liquid and purée phase, but it’s just a small stepping stone to better things!

VEGAS!!!
Is there such a thing as a quiet family trip to Vegas? Or any type of quiet trip to Vegas? That's like going to New York City to get away from people haha

VSG candidate, boyfriend NOT onboard!
I am sorry you are going through this. Not to sound callous, but he sounds like a jerk. The truth is that this situation sounds like a lose/lose. If you decide not to get the surgery to accommodate him, eventually you may begin to harbor resentment. As you continue to push yourself to get results, there is a strong possibility they won't be what you are hoping for. So many of us try to lose weight. And we do. But then it stops. I have a few friends who went from 300lbs+ to a healthy weight, but their life literally revolves around working out and always making the perfect food choices. My doctor explained it that our bodies are like memory foam. They are accustomed to our obese size, and want to get back to that weight. I eat a candy bar? 2lb gain right there. My sister eats a big mac with fries and lg coke? Nada. So if the weight does not come off or stay off, in the back of your mind you may begin to blame him. That is a very ugly situation. On the flip side, if you DO get the surgery, your boyfriend is going to feel like you didn't value his opinion. That you didn't take him into consideration. While I would love to say that he is a self-centered butthead for thinking this, it really isn't. When people important to us make life-changing decisions, it has a snowball effect so obviously we want our opinions known. You love him, so you care for his opinion. However it only goes so far. You need to take care of you over his feelings. This situation should make you reevaluate what you want in life. You have a view of how you want to live your life, and if that involves having the surgery to pursue an obesity free life, then you need to ask yourself if you will allow one person's different opinion to trump that. It is not an easy choice. It might help if you think of it not as a choice between him or the surgery, but instead think of it as two different versions of yourself. Do you want to be a WLS patient on the road to a healthier lifestyle? Or do you want to continue doing what your doing and go for the best results you can?

I feel so guilty about not having a liquid pre-op, but I have cut out many things already. I haven't had a candy bar in 3 months haha. I drink a shake every morning, but I make my own. (Today was 1/2C greek yogurt, 8oz unsweetened almond milk, 1 scoop Delicious Dream French Vanilla protein powder and 1/4C of frozen GS apples). I am keeping my calories to around 1400, carbs fairly low, and no added sugars. Be that as it may... my weight hasn't gone down much :(. My body doesn't like to lose weight haha.

Bariatric haul! What have you bought for your journey or plan to buy?
Hi everyone! My surgery is next week and I am about done with all my pre-op shopping. I have purchased: 3 Different brands of Protein Powder: Delicious Dream French Vanilla (24g), Aria Protein in Chocolate, Vanilla (both 20g) and Vanilla Cupcake (10g Lower protein for a not so dense shake), and Isopure (25g) in 4 flavors, including unlfavored. Premier Protein RTD (30g) in chocolate, caramel, vanilla, bananas & cream and strawberry. Protein Waters: Protein20 (20g), Premier Protein Clear (15g), and Trimino (7g) 2x Blender Bottles Multiple small plates (This was strongly recommended by multiple wls vets!) Multiple small bowls Milk of Magnesia Colace Bariatric Fusion Vitamins Calcium Chews Benefiber Cheap slippers for in hospital stay (those socks suck) Toilet seat riser (recommended by a soon-to-be sleeved friend on here) Squatty Potty (I hear it works, so I figured why not!) I didn't have to buy any shake/food equipment since I already had a food scale and the Ninja Inteli-sense system that has a blender/food processor/ spiralizer/ and some other random things (I have yet to use so not sure what they do haha) And because I am neurotic, I've tested out dozens of recipes over the last few months and built up a little repitoire of bariatric-friendly recipes for me to try post-surgery for each different stage. I'll be making some homemade bone broth this week (Dad's a butcher so this comes out really really good!) as well as other quick meals for the first few days post surgery where I probably won't want to cook. Now that I am reading over this I probably over prepared, but that's type of person I am.

So thankful for support at home - and sometimes it's funny
He sounds like a great man and hubby It makes a huge difference having support at home. My heart breaks for those who struggle with establishing a solid support group, especially when spouses/SOs are the ones who are the unsupportive ones. I wish everyone had this!

Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
So can the lap-band. Risk of severe complications are not restricted to the VSG, DS or RnY. Each procedure has it's risks and potential complications. Despite the fact that there are MANY banders who would swear by the product, the fact is that a number of practices no longer offer lap-band due to the escalating failure rate. In fact some insurances are no longer approving it. That doesn't mean that those who chose the band were wrong, or that their success is doomed to future failure. Nor does it mean that the product does not work. It means that the product's potential risks are beginning to overshadow the less-invasive/cost effective benefit, therefore many practices and insurance companies warn against it.

5/14 Roll Call
Not nervous at all yet. I am sure I will be as it draws closer, but I’m so committed it feels more like a relief than anything else. I’ve been on a low cal low carb diet for a few months now in preparation of this, and can’t say I miss things all that much? I have been having so much fun experimenting with new recipes so maybe it’s kept my mind off it. Although I do miss wine!
