12 days post-op. Depressed and struggling

This is a life changing event. Change can be really scary, especially when there is no going back. You make need medication or counseling to help you deal with it. If you do, so be it. Do what you have to do and move forward. My first action would be to talk to the weight loss center and tell them how you are feeling. I don’t think you are the only patient feeling overwhelmed. As for being hungry-are you truly hungry or is head hunger? Head hunger is a true b***h!! I’m three months out and I could probably count on one hand the days that I was truly hungry. Thirsty, that’s another story. Days I just wanted to eat-every one of them! I think eating was a habit for me, a very bad habit. We have the tools to create new eating habits and I’m determined to use them. HW. 306 SW. 275 CW. 242

    Feeling emotional

I worried about how family get together’s would work out. They so often center around food. One thing that really helps is to remember the rules. 1) no drinking with your meal. When eating out, I order a large class of unsweetened tea and sip it while the other folks have appetizers(our NUT advised stopping fluids 5 minuets before meal- some are different),I usually need the fluids anyway. 2 Chew your food thoroughly, put your fork down between bites. Nobody will notice if you aren’t eating that way. Especially if you are the life of the party, keeping conversation going. 3. Order grilled meat/seafood and veggies. Eat your protein first, then your vegetables. You may fall off the wagon occasionally, but not very fall and nothing you can’t recover from.
  4. If you take milk of mag, take a small dose first! It had been six days for me, so I took MM per our post op instructions. I didn’t think anything about the dose, took the normal 30 mls. I had explosive poo, had to change my clothes, it was awful!! Fortunately, I haven’t has any issues since then.

    How long?

My insurance required 6 months of “coaching”. It was thought Preventure, our employee wellness program. It was online, my mail and over the phone. I was expecting diet only, but it was much more than that. They worked with me on techniques such as slowing down mealtime, chewing food thoroughly, no carbonated beverages, no liquids with meals or for an hour afterwards. These are changes that you have make after surgery. The idea was to create new habits that I would be comfortable with by the time I had surgery. At the time, I thought it was a little over the top, then I attended a few pre-op group nutrition classes. People who where looking at surgery in 4-6 weeks and not familiar with the routines appeared to be overwhelmed with all the requirements. It’s a lot to try and accomplish in just a few weeks. I have to wonder how many dropped out. Just giving up carbonated beverages was a huge achievement for me!

    Persuading my Psychiatrist

I’m in the pre surgery process and have been approved for surgery on February 19th. I had a major depressive episode years ago after my divorce. I haven’t needed to take antidepressants in over five years. The psychiatrist that I am consulting with talked to me quite a bit about the the incidence of post bariatric surgery depression and that there is a significant chance that I might need to start taking medication again. He feels that I need to be watched closely for problems. I remember him making the statement that they really didn’t know why, but bariatric patients have an increased incidence of post-operative depression. I have not researched the statistical data to validates his statement, it might be worth the time to read up on the issue.
