Weight Loss Family Reunion
sillykitty replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Then this reunion has definitely moved to my town then! It's currently 77 degree, clear skies and an ocean breeze! -
Look at you, and I'm afraid to go short, much less bald!
-
I'm just desperate and vain!

I have tried caster oil, hot oil treatments, no poo, co washing. I can't deal with those because my hair is straight and tends to oily already. All that just makes it oilier, and leads me to washing more often, which seems to defeat the purpose. I definitely wash much less often. If I'm home, running normal errands, and just seeing close friends or family, I don't wash. So I can go days and days between washing, which I never used to. I have never really manipulate my hair much, usually wash and air dry. I'd only blow dry and flat iron for important meetings, or very special occasions. Day to day I usually keep my hair up in a loose bun. I started sleeping in a silk night cap. I'm tempted to wear it all day when I work from home, but I see too many neighbors, delivery people, etc. to be able to pull that off

Ugh! Sorry to hear that! I'm don't do a lot of self pity, but I actually cried in the shower a couple of weeks ago over this. I'm tempted to do the short and choppy thing, but I'm scared. I'm going to be w a coworker next week who has her cosmetology degree, (and is younger and hipper than I am!) and get her ideas on going short.

@sleeve23may2018 I have a sincere question. Do you think the restrictions of keto/low carb exacerbated your binge eating?

Best way to introduce eggs into the diet
sillykitty replied to Letsgetgoing2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did egg whites, cheese and hot sauce. But I have an iron stomach, so YMMV -
5 weeks post sleeve, stomach ache and nausea
sillykitty replied to pleasedontjudgeme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hard to tell. But I developed nausea and stomach ache at 3 weeks post op. It was exacerbated when I drank water, and lessened when I ate. It persisted, but gradually lessened to a point where I just have a mild stomach ache from time to time now. -
Lol, I'm all up for the scientific method, but not on this one. I actually could manage on the 5oz of food most days. But the low carbs make it a deal breaker. Can't have jerky or cheese, I'm out

Wouldn't the lack of food volume be an issue?

This is a thread about Keto, not about @FluffyChix This post was not directed at you, but at Keto in general.

Thanks for clarifying. Low carb and keto are definitely not the same diets, and I wish they wouldn't be used interchangeably. Low carb can certainly make sense. Many WLS patients are low carb without really trying, just by eating protein first, veggies second and carbs last, as most of us are told to. I think your last point is one that is often missed. If you're losing weight, by definition you're in ketosis, no matter your carb intake. "Ketosis describes the metabolic state whereby the body converts fat stores into energy, releasing ketones in the process"

So I've done that math of what true Keto macros look like calorie wise, assuming 60 g of protein Protein 25% - 60g - 240 calories Carbs 5% - 12g - 48 calories Fat 70% - 75g - 672 calories Total 960 calories Total consumed by weight 147 g = 5.2 oz I totally fail to understand how this is a sound diet for a WLS patient. That is an incredible low amount of carbs, my calcium supplements almost total that alone, one would basically need to eliminate dairy. That is a lot of fat to consume (1/3 cup of oil). All the while only being just over 5 oz of food.

Again ... are people saying Keto, when they mean low carb? @FluffyChix You've generously posted lots of info about your diet on here, pics, recipes, the number of calories you eat. It doesn't look like keto to me. By what you just wrote: 60 g protein = 240 calories 25 g carbs = 100 calories 60% of cals fom fat = 850 calories Total = 1190 calories The math doesn't add up to me, since you've said you keep your calories lower than that?
-
People say Keto .... but do they mean low carb? Keto has high fat, low protein, super low carb. "The general ratio of macros to follow is 70% fats, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates" I don't see how most WLS patients can get to 60 g+ protein, if it only comprises 25% of their calories, especially if they are eating a reasonable amount of calories a day. I also think that 5% calories from carbs is very very hard for most people to sustain long term. The constant counting and sense of deprivation leads people to fall off the wagon.

Question I'm trying to decide should I take 2 or 3 weeks off from work
sillykitty replied to Redapples's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree, it is highly dependent on the nature of your job. I work from home, so I took zero time off. My regular work is no more physically taxing than surfing the internet. If I had to go into an office I would have take about two-three days post op, just to have the energy to get dressed, make up, hair, and drive. I started back up work travel three weeks post op, without any issues. But I had an easy recovery, with no serious issues. -
Or you can add Benefiber to your shakes

Are you tracking your food? -
I can't make a decision
sillykitty replied to CashmereAndBones's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had VSG because portion control is hard. It's hard to eat only a little, or restricted foods while dieting. You're hungry, and it takes a lot of food to fill you up. But with VSG, I have much reduced hunger. And when I do eat, the quantity is so small, it's max a few hundred calories, and I'm full. I have lost nearly 70 lbs in 5 months, and it has been easier than any diet I've ever been on. You also seem to think that you have to be on a crazy restrictive diet after VSG. I'm certainty not. I eat quite healthfully when I'm home, focusing on protein and otherwise fairly low cal foods. But I don't restrict anything, I eat fruit, bread, protein pasta, cheese, frozen yogurt bars, frozen fruit bars, etc. But for example I don't make fettuccine alfredo or fried chicken at home. So it's balanced and moderate, IMO. I actually eat out multiples time per week for work. I wouldn't recommend eating at as much as I do, because it is harder to make healthy choices, and hard to track restaurant food. But for me it is unavoidable. Sometime I make healthy choices dining out, sometime I don't. I could eat healthier while dining out, but with clients and colleagues it's not appropriate to customize dishes very much. I've seriously eaten just about everything in the last 4 months, including bites of dessert. And most days even with 3 meals out, I'm still under 600 calories because my stomach size is so restricted. But I am very conscience of what I consume, I log everything. So even though I might have biscuits and gravy for breakfast, I'm not off the rails and have a f it attitude, if that makes sense? As far as FOMO, there is only one hard decision I made. I've cut out all alcohol. I didn't have to, it doesn't have an adverse effect when I do have it. I just don't want to add the empty liquid calories to my diet. It was a big deal because of the travel and entertaining I do. I'm in bars multiple times a week, and I'm drinking water, so definitely awkward. But if it was only glass of wine or two a week, I wouldn't have cut it out completely, as that's pretty immaterial in the scheme of things. But for me, many weeks would be 20+ drinks, so it just would have counteracted my WLS too much. -
Reduced food following WLS

Yep, and those are much larger than mine! Last night I had one lamb chop and one bite of mac and cheese, and was completely full. -

sillykitty replied to Matt Z's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's not that it doesn't have merit, low of high A/G ratios is a sign of various diseases and disorders. It's part of a standard blood panel, not specifically for WLS patients. For the test results to be low without any other issue, one would have to be life threateningly malnourished. The body will take protein from your skeletal muscles if protein intake isn't sufficient. So by the time the tests show low protein, serious damage will have been done. -

@FluffyChix That meme isn't in keeping with the intent of this thread "where people can own up to things without anyone else chiming in with anything negative" I think the spirit of this thread is we don't have to be perfect to be successful
