  1. Well Thankfully, everything you read isn’t always true! I went to my dental cleaning and my dentist laughed at me when I asked him if I was losing my teeth or if I had Meth mouth like I had read in an article. He told me absolutely not and that my teeth were strong and I wasn’t going to lose them or need dentures! He said that the only issue I had was from a prior dentist over filling my fillings, which caused two of them to break. I was so relieved! He told me to not read anything else about someone else’s experience because we don’t always know every issue they may have gone through. I do take my Vitamins, my doctor checks me every 3 months. I do think it is something we should be aware of as Gastric Bypass patients, but nothing to freak out over, like someone said, that guy on TV had bad teeth prior to his surgery! So for now, I’m in great shape and will keep smiling! They aren’t perfect, but they are my real teeth! (Some crowns, that will be getting replaced by nicer ones!)

  2. I had Gastric Bypass on 12-1-2009 and have recently discovered that my teeth are riddled with cavities, issues below the gum lines, broken teeth, crumbling teeth, teeth turning gray, enamel thinning and cavaties under my crowns! I reached out to a friend of mine who had the same surgery about 5 years ago and she is going through the same thing! She spent over $8K last year and $7K needed this year only for her dentist to tell her she will eventually lose all of her teeth and need dentures! My dental appt yesterday he estimated $10K worth of dental work. After my appointment I watched the show 600 pound life and the guy was having serious dental issues!!! I began Googling and so many patients are having the same issues and were never told about this!

Is anyone else going through this that is post Gastric Bypass? My teeth were beautiful prior to surgery, now I look like a meth addict!!!

you look beautiful - good for you to keep it off so long!! truly an inspiration to all of us, especially the newbies like me! :)

Jeannie49 Thank You!!! You got this! Always follow the rules and decide to never go back to where you came from! It is my biggest motivator! ❤️

  4. Please remember that if you don’t get enough Protein you will suffer with Hair loss and muscle loss! I went through both! I still struggle getting protein in after 8+ years! You get tired of shakes, and I still dump even with the smallest amount of sugar! So I stay away from any sugar! Please try harder to get it in, you don’t want to go down this path!

Best of Luck in your journey!

  5. Hi Ladies! I’m 53 and I had my RNY on 12-1-09. I think I lost the majority of my weight the first 6 months, then it slowed down. As I near my 9 year anniversary, I have kept off my 150+ pound weight loss and even weigh a few pounds less now. I have no more medical issues related to obesity and yes I have some saggy skin, but not horrible.

The biggest advantage for myself to being older when doing this is sticking to the rules and changing the bad habits into good ones. I used the tool to change how and what I ate daily. I still eat very little.

The biggest challenge was and still is, not getting enough Protein in. As it is very difficult to eat meat, I struggle this far out and have lost lots of muscle mass. I also quit taking my Vitamins and I do have issues with not having enough Iron and Vitamin D and other vitamins.

I had several difficulties in the beginning, but I would never change any of it!

Its nice meeting each of y’all and may y’all have much success on your journey!

  6. Hi Ladies, I am 53 and had my Gastric Bypass on 12-1-09 when I was 45. It was the best decision of my life. I have always followed the rules. Not eating and drinking at the same time, I never finish a meal, I do my best to eat healthy foods over anything else. I don’t eat sweets and only drink Water. Maybe once a year I have a coke. But not often. I do have the saggy skin, but I don’t mind it since I am 170 pounds smaller and have managed to keep it off. I am always open to talking to anyone who wants advice on how I have managed to keep it off for 8 years. I never want to go back to that person I was before. So I stay focused on what I eat and how much I eat. You can succeed, it had to be a lifestyle change. It’s not easy, but it is possible! Make your mind up to do this for yourself! I still don’t see myself as “skinny” even though im much smaller. It’s a mental battle. But I love my life and have no regrets! 7. Hi Lina! I had the same exact issues that you are experiencing! I had to get a dialation done within a month of my surgery, I couldn’t swallow Water, much less anything else! I lost a lot of weight my first month because of my issues!

Prior to surgery, I was a picky eater, but I was forced to change everything. I had no clue that Greek Yogurt would soon become my new Best friend! I can honestly say, it will get easier!! Hang in there as you are going to go through so many changes the first few months! Stick to not eating and drinking at the same time, eat slowly and I never finish a meal.

Always remember you are beautiful and worthy of being the best you can be! And that isn’t measured by a scale!

  8. My doctor told a story about a year after my surgery. He had never lost a patient during surgery and the first person to pass was a female who decided to eat a piece of chicken during her liquid phase. Literally only a few days out of surgery. The outcome was death. Not trying to say this to scare anyone, but there is a reason we MUST do liquids only. There are many stitches inside of us that can be torn from food. And it happened to this female. She bled internally. It’s not worth it! If you must have something, please keep it simple like mash potatoes! Prayers for all!

  9. I had surgery 8 years ago. I used to be a member of another Gastric Bypass forum during that time, which I contribute to a lot of my success. The information was priceless! I have not gained any weight back; however, at times it would fluctuate more than I was comfortable with and I would do a “reset” it’s just like after surgery, go back through your stages of liquids only, then soft foods, then food. Follow the rules, don’t drink while eating, don’t graze. I think it’s called “Pouch Reset” it works! Google it and see if it will help you!

  10. I had Gastric Bypass on 12-1-09 and lost 170 pounds. I have kept it off and even lost a few more the last year. I am healthier now than I was prior to my surgery. I do know people who had weight loss surgeries in the 80’s and were fine. I think it’s different for each person. Your success will depend a lot on yourself. Surgery is only a tool to get you on the right road, in order to stay on the right road, you must change the way you eat! Lifestyle change!

  11. I remember when the hunger pains came back for me. I thought it would be much longer before I felt them. I was told I would have about 12 to 18 months to lose “the weight” but for myself, the biggest weight loss was the first 6 months, after that it was very slow!!! Try to eat as much Protein as possible. And never drink with your food. If you follow the rules, you will do this!

    much success to you!

  12. I had a stricture a few weeks after my surgery and it was during Christmas and I could barely get a sip of Water down each day. Finally got a dialation done around New Years and my doctor says, well the good news is that people who go through this usually lose more weight than those that don’t! It was scary, but 8 years later, I have not gained any weight back. Just hang in there, it does get better!!!

  13. I had several complications from the beginning, had to have surgery twice after my bypass to fix my esophagus that was closing up and to remove my gallbladder. I still have dumping syndrome and there are many things I still can’t eat after 8 years, BUT I have NO regrets! I would do it all over again! The only thing I would change is to exercise more!
