How much was you self-pay ?

$7500 for gastric bypass with lap band retrieval. Additional $567.10 for a " complications fund insurance policy" to cover any complications that might occur since my health insurance wont cover anything related to this, $1287.00 for airfare, another $500 to stay 3 extra nights above what the package paid for. I stayed longer just to be safe, and a few hundred for things like vitamins, protein shakes, act. Roughly $10,000 for everything. I could have gotten significantly cheaper airfare but I decided on first class and non stop. I did t want to be smushed in coach right after surgery... 2. Mexico is a leader in weight loss surgery, just do your research and pick the best, not the cheapest. At the time I had my lap band (going on 10 years ago) Mexico was way ahead of the US as far as number of procedures performed. Not sure if that's still true. I felt totally confident in my choice. My only words of caution would be if you're a person who is super needy in the medical dept and go to or call your Dr for every little thing, then Mexico is not for you. There will be no follow up care so you have to be savvy enough to figure things out on your own. Your surgeon will give you guidelines to follow of course, and you can always email them, but that's about it for f/u. I'm heading back down there in 9 days for a bypass, with no hesitation. My surgeon is Armando Joya. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Currency/Tipping

I wish the tipping system would go away. Tips are supposed to be a thank you for going above and beyond what is normal, and should never be expected. These days it seems we're expected to compensate for crappy wages. I don't think so! Sent from my SM-N950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    January bypass buddies??

Yes, this site looks fantastic for that so I'm glad I found it. I'm not sure if I'm brave, or just plain crazy. Time will tell, but I'm tired of being fat, wearing ugly clothes, and having no energy. I'm definitely looking forward to being down a good 75lbs by summer (my first goal). I'm so tired of hot miserable summers because of wanting to cover up. My second goal, to snow ski next winter. I miss skiing which was something I enjoyed before packing on the weight. So excited to be able to make goals like that.

    January bypass buddies??

I go back & forth. Some days I'm very nervous & wondering if I'm making a huge mistake because this was an impulsive decision to have this done, then other days it's no big deal & I'm ready. Mostly I will miss that extra $7000 in my checking account. LOL It's been nice having it sit there while I wait for my surgery date. Regardless of my nerves, I am going through with this. I had my lap band by the same MD close to 10 years ago in Puerto Vallarta and it hasn't been successful for me so I'm flying back down to Mexico on Jan 3rd, bypass surgery on the 4th, flying home on the 10th. Oh, there is actually one thing I'm nervous about and that's post op care. I don't have a doctor I see regularly, and none that know I'm even doing this surgery, so I'm nervous about having no follow up care in the US and no family to assist afterwards. I'm pretty much on my own. That's the major downside to surgery in Mexico. If you're not comfortable being your own MD, then have it done in the US where you can be closely followed. I will have to be very proactive and make sure I'm doing everything I should be doing.
  9. I'm taking 3 weeks off post op. I want to be close to normal foods by the time I have to go back to work, I figured the liquids & pureed foods would be easier to manage if I was home. I wish I would have taken off 2 weeks pre op too though. I am struggling with the pre op diet at work, I wish I could do it from home instead and maybe I wouldn't be cheating so much...ugh.
