  1. Ok y'all I'm sorry if this is a blunt topic and I know everyone is different but my question is...what does it feel like when you're having sex after being sleeved? Does it hurt your stomach having your partner adding his weight on top of you?

No need to have him on top of you full force ;) haha if you catch my drift. I’ve had no issues, but we do take care and choose positions wisely. Otherwise, go forth and enjoy!!!

    HW: 213lb (97kg)
    SW: 200lb (91kg)
    CW: 176lb (80kg)
    GW: 120lb (55kg)
    Height: 5’2 (153cm)

  2. What's your goal weight? My surgeon didn't give me one, though maybe we will talk about it at our appointment next week. I just picked something, though I'm not sure I want to be that weight if I don't have curves and an apple bottom.

*raises hand* here! I started at 213 and I’m now 176; surgery was jan 17th 2018. I didn’t set a goal weight either and my surgeon didn’t mention anything, I’m just going to keep going until I feel healthy and in a good BMI range.

  3. Hello everyone! I am 25 days post op and haven’t lost weight in the past week. Have only lost 11 lbs since surgery. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes! Very normal! I plateaued twice and I’m only 6ish weeks out. I was plateaued for over a week, stuck at 187lb, then suddenly dropped to 176lb. I upped my Fluid and Protein intake and that seemed to help.
Hopefully your stall will end soon; but it’s very normal. I’ve read of many others who also stall in the first month.

  4. Hopefully it’s something simple... Most antibiotics cause major nausea if taken without food, so depending on what’s going on maybe that is playing a role. I have heard when you stop a PPI you can have a bit of a surge in acid, so that could do it too. Let us know what the DR says and I hope you feel better. If they want you to stick it out a bit ask for dissolvable Zofran.

Oh and also I was taking 4 tablets a day for 7 days... all on an empty stomach [emoji26] whoops

I spoke to the surgeon’s office yesterday, but they weren’t too worried about it being anything serious because they also believe the antibiotics combined with stopping the PPI may have just stuffed up my gut bacteria a bit. They’ve got me on Probiotics now and will review again in a few days. The nausea is improving but it’s still there at times, just not as badly as a few days ago thankfully. I’m able to eat and drink a little better but I haven’t gone back to eating full Protein meats yet... I think I’m just not mentally ready to deal with the potential nausea that may come! Otherwise all other foods/fluids have been okay. Thank you for your response!

  6. Last night I dreamed that I ate and then drank too soon after because my phone timer malfunctioned ... I was flipping out then awoke to realize that it was a dream
I may have some underlying issues and fears creeping up in my subconscious that I need to address immediately
Anyone else worried about making that type of mistake in real life too?

Absolutely! For the week prior to surgery, and then about 2 weeks after, I’d have regular dreams that I was eating my pre-surgery size portion of spaghetti and taking huge bites and gulps, and then in my dream I’d suddenly remember I had the sleeve and would start freaking out. At that point I’d wake up clutching at my belly in a panic. It’s settled now though. Our minds can do crazy things with our fears!

  7. Several thoughts here.
After my surgery, my doctor prescribed omeprazole for the first year after surgery so that my stomach would heal properly. In the States there is an over-the-counter version called Prilosec, so you don't even need a prescription for this medicine.
Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria but also destroy the good gut bacteria. It is important to reestablish these colonies of gut bacteria after you get off the antibiotics. This is done by taking Probiotics.
Some patients develop a problem called a stricture. This is a common problem that can be identified and corrected using an upper GI endoscopy or EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) followed by a balloon dilation. http://alohasurgery.com/strictures/
According to my hospital discharge directions, one of the times to contact your surgeons office is if you have "an inability to eat or drink". That is you.

Thanks so much for your response! Yikes, I didn’t consider a stricture, only because I can get food/liquid down, it’s just with great nausea and I haven’t yet vomited. I think I’ll call my surgeon today before my scheduled phone consult...

  8. Antibiotics are really bad to wipe out your gut microbiota, so there could be some merit to their playing a role. Try eating yogurt, Probiotics, etc.
You really should contact your doctor and discuss this ASAP.

Thanks creek! I really think the antibiotics are definitely playing a role, and coincided with stopping the PPI. I’ve bought some live probiotic drinks and yoghurt, now if I can stomach them is another issue [emoji23]. Thankfully I have a phone consult with them later today so I’ll ask about it. Just want to feel “normal” again 🤢

  9. Im one day post op (2/20/2018) And I noticed my largest incision where my stomach was pulled out of was very painful. After i took a look at it, I noticed it was dented in, is this normal!? And how long were your incisions no longer painful?

I have a dent in my smallest incision between my breast bone - surgeon said it was from the tool they use to move the liver out of the way. He said it’ll eventually go away. Maybe check with your surgeon.

  10. So I’m about 4.5 weeks post op and finished taking my 30 day course of omeprazole. My surgeon said to see how I go without it and didn’t give me another prescription.

My recovery overall has been a dream. No major issues, no nausea, and was able to tolerate everything I ate. Until now.

Since stopping the omeprazole, my nausea has now been constant, day and night. I can no longer tolerate Proteins without regurgitating every few seconds. Even fluids trigger serious nausea. I feel like I’m constantly gagging, and I find myself avoiding eating now. I haven’t got any heart burn or anything, it’s just horrible nausea.

Has anyone experienced this after stopping their PPI?

Side note: I’ve been on a really high dose 4 times a day of an antibiotic (keflex) to help clear a minor infection in one of my incisions, so not sure if this is affecting it too.

  11. After working out at the Y I took my kids to Chuck E. cheese to play. They had some pizza & I ordered a 6 piece bone in hot wings (smallest they had) after 20 minutes I ate 5 of them & I’m stuffed! I love this except that I couldn’t even take a bite of my carrots or celery. I guess I’ll take it home for a snack in 3 hours.

Not gonna lie, I’m kinda jealous you can eat 5! I can only manage 1-2 normal size wings 4 weeks out, and it takes me a good 20-30 mins to eat! They’re so freaking yum I don’t want to stop sometimes but sleeve says no lol .

Glad to hear you’ve been doing so well seahawks! Wishing you continued ease of recovery.

  12. Hell to the yes. Multiple periods in one month, and I then missed one altogether. Much heavier, crampier and longer than usual. I'm not on the pill or any birth control (I do not need a daily reminder that I'm not getting frisky). I got so freaked out by these weird periods that I ran to my bariatric doctor who said wacky menstruation after surgery is totally normal. The surgery messes with our hormones, as does the weight loss. My doctor also warned me 14 times that you are super fertile after surgery and that it was not a good idea to risk pregnancy (even though I explained that I am celibate AF). Anyway, it's all pretty much settled down now.

Your post made me chuckle!! [emoji23]

  13. I'm planning for surgery this summer and asked the doctors office if they do single or multi incision. They said they only do multi. I feel like I'd prefer the single to have less scars but I don't know of another doctor in my area that does the surgery. Will the scars not be that big of a deal or is it worth it to find another doctor who does single incision?
    Thanks!

My surgeon is an extremely experienced one (he actually pioneered the first gastric sleeve in Australia after training in the U.S) and when I asked him about single incision, he looked me dead in the eye and said “if I ever saw one of my students doing a single incision sleeve, I would smack them upside the head” LOL. The reason being is that complications are much higher with single incision because of the restricted range of motion and lack of view of your other organs (higher potential for spleen/liver knicks, leaks, etc).
He managed to do my sleeve with only 4 tiny incisions, and one is hidden in my belly button. You can always discuss this with your surgeon but I actually think your surgeon is a good one if he doesn’t do single incision.

  14. For the Ladies - Did anyone’s cycle go completely wacky in the months after surgery? If so, for how long? I was sleeved this past November and I didn’t get mine the month after, then I did, now I missed it again! Is this due to rapid weight loss or other ???

I’m only a month out, and I’m on birth control, but I ended up getting my period whilst still on the active pills, and have bled for about 10 days straight now lol. I know maybe it’s not a similar situation as yours, but my cycle has definitely been affected (mainly because I’m not absorbing the pill properly right now... let that be a warning to other pill users! Beware lol).
Have you had a chat to your surgeon about it? I suspect it would be somewhat normal to have menstrual changes given the way we eat now, but perhaps checking in with the surgeon will shed some extra light on it. All the best!

  15. Thanks for the reply, but they removed my gallbladder when I had the sleeve surgery. I have my follow up on 2/27, hopefully they can help. I just didn't know if anyone else had this issue.

Oh good, that rules that out! Hopefully you can get some answers soon at your follow up :) all the best!

  16. My surgery was 3/10/17, and since December I have had 5 occurrences in which I experience severe gas pain, or so I hope it's gas..This pain is so intense that it takes my breath away and nothing helps it, not walking, sitting, laying, trying to pass gas, gas x strips, nothing, I just have to wait for it to pass. Typically it lasts about 3-4 minutes. The first 2 times it happened it was after I tried drinking a beer, yes, I know, I am not supposed to drink it, so I have sworn off beer forever now.. Last week and today it happened again, after I drank my Premier Protein, which I have been drinking about 4-5 times a week since surgery. Has anyone else had this happen? The pain is localized to right around my ribs...Am I drinking too fast?

I’d get it checked out by your surgeon - it’s possible it’s the start of your gallbladder giving you issues, particularly if it’s more localised to the right side. (Not meaning to worry you)

  17. Thank you.... You all are really instilling alot of hope.... I guess 2 weeks post op it's hard to see the pros due to all the crappy feelings of surgery.... I'm excited to see what life holds.... Just don't want to completely not enjoy a meal or rice etc... I'm Puerto Rican lol we love our food and that will never change.... I just hope that smaller portions doesn't turn into not eating my Hispanic food etc

There is 100% hope, you’re in the buyer’s remorse phase, but it will pass and you’ll start to feel better and see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Oh honey I understand, I’m Mediterranean and we love our food too (that’s how I got into this mess to begin with!). You will be able to eat your traditional foods in time; all is not lost with this surgery I assure you. I’m eating tiny amounts of rice and Pasta as per my nutritionist’s instructions and I’m tolerating it fine. I can’t eat a sickening amount, but what I can eat, I thoroughly enjoy.
There is hope - just give yourself some time to adjust, heal, and recover. Stay hydrated as much as you can, drink and eat your Proteins, and take those vitamins! [emoji846] And do consult with your surgeon for any ongoing concerning issues.

  18. hi I'm about 2 weeks post-op. I feel like ever since I had surgery I've done nothing but regret it. the more I think about things the more I start to feel like this was a big mistake. I've been having chest pressure when I drink or eat anything. I'm on soft foods and no matter what I eat it feels like it there's just a huge lump in my chest. Then I begin to feel like I want to burp but nothing is coming up. I'm so thirsty and want to just take two big chugs of Water and I can barely take 2 sips without it feeling tight. I had a hiatal hernia repair also with my sleeve. I've been getting depressed because right now I feel hopeless . I don't ever see myself having a normal sip of Water again....i knew I'd have to eat smaller portions but will I ever be able to finish a whole damn sandwich again? This feels like torture and I'm terrified that things won't get better. I want to have a normal life and now I feel I just screwed myself. To not even be able to drink normally again? What have I done? [emoji26][emoji22]
My question is, can u drink normally now? Can you have a small plate of food or are you still eating like a baby bird? When or does it get better? Does this pressure from drinking or eating virtually nothing ever go away? (I can also describe the feeling like a stuck burp)...
I didn't do this so that I can have a tablespoon of food every meal. I just wanted portion control.... but not like this....it's torture...I'm so sad and regretful
Please tell me it gets better [emoji20]

You sound exactly like I did up until a few days ago when I was cleared to eat normally. I promise you it gets better and you will be able to take decent mouthfuls of water. I’m only 3.5 weeks post op and can already drink very comfortably and I’m eating normal food. I can’t gorge or eat excessively but I eat one baked chicken wing and one 1 inch piece of white fish and I’m full - happily content and full! I never imagined I would get to a place of feeling “normal” again and I cried almost every single day because I felt sick. My heart skipped every single time I ate or drank anything, my chest was heavy, I’d get “stuck” feelings constantly but it has all passed.

Please hang in there - you’re still only 10 days out and very fresh! Be kind to yourself and let your body recover with time. I promise this alien-like feeling will pass and you’ll feel great again. I strongly suggest you contact your clinic and chat with the nurse there or the surgeon, they really do offer great help and reassurance.

You will be just fine, it’s still early days and you’re still raw xoxo reach out if you need to chat

  19. Thank you for your kind words. They do make it seem like doom and gloom! They said because when you have VSG the liquid will not make you feel full for long term, so that’s why you shouldn’t have smoothies. You’ve given me some hope. They said, no Soups, no smoothies, etc. I’m glad you’re enjoying your straw- because that is what I would almost miss the most lol. Do you think I would be able to buy frozen chicken breast that are already cooked to assist me in the prepping process?

Glad to be of help! I’ve been living off soups and purees and blended chicken/meat/etc so I have no idea what these people expect you to survive on post-op lol. Obviously a little later down the track when you’re back on regular foods, it’s important to pick Protein rich foods over liquid stuff because it does move through you quicker, meaning you’ll take in more calories. But with careful intake you should be fine.

Absolutely you can use precooked chicken. It’ll blend better in frozen form anyway! As long as it’s not full of unnecessary additives it’s fine.

  20. I have to say I feel very discouraged. I’m not sure why but I went into this fully optimistic and learning about the pre op diet and the things you can and cannot have after the procedure makes me very nervous. For example: I love blending spinach Water ect, but I can’t because they say no liquid calories. Not even yogurt:(. I just feel this heavy weight in my chest. I don’t eat a lot of meat in general and I asked the nutritionist after if there were some vegetarian options and she said “yes, it’s just going to be much harder” . I can eat chicken, and turkey but I have never really cooked it cause it kinda grosses me out handling raw meat ( I’m weird I know. . I know all this will be worth it. Another thing is the straw thing you can’t drink from a straw... like I know that it is silly but it’s almost like they are taking away everything from you. I know I need this but I am so overwhelmed.

I can understand your feelings given what sounds like a stern orientation. Honestly, they make it all sound like doom and gloom, but it’s not. Is there any reason they said you can’t have your spinach blends? I would imagine that’s an amazing source of Protein. Generally when they say no liquid calories, they mean things that have 0 nutritional value (Soda, sugary drinks, milkshakes etc).
It’s really not all that bad; but ultimately it’s your decision to weigh up pros and cons. Wishing you all the best with this deciding process!
Oh and I have drunk from straws and I’m 2.5 weeks post op. They only say not to because it can create unnecessary gassiness (I haven’t had an issue with it)

  21. I had Thrush on my tongue, which is pretty common after a surgery. This is pretty much a yeast infection on your tongue. My PCP prescribed oral Nystatin to swish and spit (can be swallowed). You may want to ask for a second opinion.

I’ve used Nystatin for true oral thrush before, which worked great! This doctor was my third opinion (had it in hospital too) and nobody thinks it’s oral thrush. I asked if it was but they’ve said it isn’t looking like it. If it doesn’t go away in a few more days I’ll ask for some Nystatin! Thanks!

  22. I thought that a white tongue was a sign of dehydration... I guess other things could cause it to, since your doctor didn’t mention it.

White tongues can and do signify dehydration, however, I think the “pattern” of the whiteness/how it looks helps to determine if it’s dehydration or just a “furry” tongue. Mine definitely is of the “furry” pattern/texture haha! Gross 🤢

  23. Surgery was 2 weeks ago, I’m fine, healing great, etc. Ever since I had surgery my bowel movements have all been a maroon color. I told my surgeon he said it must be from liquids/dyes, or something I’m taking in...but it is still happening like daily. It’s kinda freaking me out. Has this happened to anyone else? I’m trying to stay calm and not freak out but it’s kind scary to think it could be blood. Advice please!

Are any of your Vitamins or Protein Drinks dyed a certain colour? My vitamins are liquid and bright orange, so you can guess that any and everything coming out of my body is also bright orange lol.
