Next Wednesday I have an appointment with my pcp and i'm going to discuss to him about my weight issues for the first time ever and its my first time ever meeting this doctor. My question is how do you go about telling your doctor about your weight issues and for him to give you a referral to a surgeon? I've been overweight almost my entire life, ever since I gave birth to my son 3 years ago my weight increased dramatically and it won't go down. SInce then i've have horrible back pains causing me to have bulging discs on my back, it makes it harder for me to workout. I've tried many diets and some diet pills and nothing. I don't know what feeling full feels like. My knees feel weaker each and every day and my weight is getting in the way at work, causing me to get horrible chaffing in my thighs. I have also noticed i'm almost out of breath doing the simplest things, its starting to effect my kids as i can't be as active as i want to be with them I can go on about different reasons why i need this weight loss surgery but i feel pathetic telling my dr some of these things cause i feel there not as extreme for him to recommend me to a surgeon but I can at least try, right? I would really appreciate you sharing your stories on how you told your doctor you needed weight loss surgery.

I just told my doctor that I’d tried losing weight. She knew I had taken pills and lost and gained. Done weight watchers. I asked for a referral to the bariatric surgeon in town. My doc was very understanding about it. She went through everything with me before I talked to the surgeon. Good luck!

I cannot believe I am posting pictures. Honestly haven’t taken pictures in years so this is stretching a major muscle, and I feel safe with you guys, my fellow sleeved peeps on this site! I am happy to say that I am actually looking in the mirror for the first time in years. Though it hasn’t been the easiest journey at all, or has been worth it, and honestly, the only tool that has ever worked for me. I feel like I have my life back.

The before picture was taken the night before surgery so I was already down 8 lbs.

    Sleeved 8/7/17 HW: 256 SW: 248

    CW: 197 on 1/3/18 5'7" GW: 150

    Wow! You look amazing!

  3. I haven’t, but I got my period right after my surgery. It was THE heaviest flow I’d ever had, and lasted over a week, when it’s never been longer than three days. I took my pill several days before my cycle stopped. Are you taking an Iron supplement? I know a lot of times heavy periods can deplete iron. Call your doctor if it hasn’t stopped by the end of what should be your next cycle. I wouldn’t worry too much. Major surgery + weight loss can whack up your system! Good luck!

I'm having the chest pain too, how long does it take to go away! I ate dinner too fast last night I'm assuming. I'm going to have to eat by myself for awhile, I feel bad when it seems like people are waiting on me to finish eating. I'm fine when I've eaten by myself. I'm so glad I got on here this morning and saw the posts, I thought I seriously hurt myself or something.

I’m not sure. It may be one of those things that lasts forever. My doctor said it was “negative reinforcement” for eating too fast. Guess I need to learn my lesson!

They can do a LOT to help. They can investigate what's going on and try to correct it. What you are describing is not normal. Keep communicating with them. Document everything and give them all the information you can.

When I go to see my nutritionist, she goes over my food journal with a fine toothed comb and insists that I eat well. She has done this since week two...when she encouraged me to try to reach 1000 calories a day as soon as possible. (which I did at three weeks).

I was sleeved 12/5....the day before you were. I am eating 1000-1200 calories a day, walking 7 miles a day, and eating a nearly normal unrestricted diet. I feel normal, healthy and really good. Not saying that to be insensitive...just wanting to illustrate how concerned I am about your situation.

I am shocked to see reports like yours...where your nutrition has been allowed to suffer for so long. This absolutely would not stand at the medical group I go to. They would be extremely concerned and doing aggressive diagnostics to address the symptoms.

Please document everything. Keep good records. If your office won't help you, take your records to another group and get a second opinion.

Am so sorry you're going through this, and hope you feel better soon. Stay strong.

Oh thank goodness. I wasn’t told how many calories to have, just to have 60 - 80 g of Protein. I started with MyFitnessPal yesterday and I’m getting about 900 cal a day. I was thinking that was too much!

Interesting - thanks. It's not in any of the material they gave me but I'm going for my two week post check up tomorrow and will ask.

Mine were ok with gummies. I take Women’s One a Day. I’m having a hard time getting my Effexor (anti-depressant) poll down. It’s a hard swallow. I did get the Biotin Melts from Bariatric Pal. They’re better than a regular Vitamin.

I'm looking at all these people getting cleared for soft foods. I feel like my surgeon is the only one with such a strict post op diet. I was sleeved 12/28/17, first week home I was on Clear Liquids only, now i'm on full liquids until the 18th (which will be 2 weeks)then i have to do 2 weeks of pureed, then finally i get start a regular diet on February 1st. Is there anyone else with a diet like this?

You’ll probably appreciate it in the end. Maybe it’s a way to jump start your weight loss!?

I think it's the fast. I have been DRINKING too much too fast and getting some pain in my chest/pouch area. So I am learning how to take it slow. Most of us who were obese IN THE PAST (we are shrinking now! yay!) were used to gulping our food down pretty quickly without chewing much. It's kind of a stress reaction because may fat people feel judged if they slowly eat and savor every bite of their food. We must learn new habits, and we can!

Doctor seemed to think it’s eating too fast, too. I’m taking it VERY slowly now and choosing extra soft foods. Doctor called it a “learning curve.”

I wonder if BCBS varies between states. My insurance (I'm in Indiana) did require a 6 month monitored program, but not a year. That seems extreme.

My BCBS in Mississippi also required 6 months. I missed a visit and had to start over. After all that, it had been over a year since my psych eval, and I had to do a follow up with the psychiatrist.

  10. Hi! I have a few questions. The first is about how much is typically supposed to be eaten in the purée stage? I feel as if I’m eating too much, but I have felt uncomfortably full which has helped made me realize when to stop. Also I’m having trouble eating slowly. My nutritionist said 2 tablespoons in 10-15 minutes which seems so slow. Is that the same for everyone else? I’m thinking this might be for the next stage. I’m also wondering about Water. I’ve accidentally chugged a few times without thinking, but I had no pain and wasn’t uncomfortable. Why aren’t we supposed to do this? Thank you in advance!

I’m at puréed stage and Water goes down fine for me. The food - just depends on what it is. Yogurt goes down way easier than Beans or something heavy. You’ll know if you eat too much or too fast. It’ll come right back up! That’s what I’m working with now.

    So much this!

If you have to do a liquid pre-op diet you can try doing what I did. I knew it was going to be tough so I tried to prep myself as much as possible. When I was a month away I started doing a liquid lunch at work. Some times it was just chicken bullion cube in hot Water and a few saltine crackers. Even though it was difficult at first I knew that I would be getting food at dinner and taught me some tricks on fighting head hunger (and real hunger) during the day.

Not saying my method was the best or right for you, but it helped me. Don't beat yourself up for failings. It's like people that beat themselves up when trying to quit smoking. Yes it sucks when you break a streak of going without a smoke, but we need to give ourselves credit when we go from a pack a day to having a single smoke after a week. This is much more mental than we think. Don't give up!

    Yaaasss! High fives! 😘❤️

I'm on day 4 of the 10 day liquid pre op diet! I feel like I'm doing really well so far. I don't feel nearly as bad as I thought I would. But cravings are still pretty strong. I'm working on learning how to better control my cravings. My girlfriend & I had discussed & planned for the whole family to start eating healthier. Before I started the liquid diet we cleaned our house out of any junk food & I was really excited for the support! The first few days we had all of our meals together, it didnt bother me to have a Protein Shake instead of their home cooked meals. Day 3 of my liquid diet comes around & on our way home from running errands, she pulls into fast food drive thru for her & the kids. I get handed their meals to hold in the car while she drives. Then we get home & when they sit down to eat I went into the restroom because I felt like crying. I came out afterwards & made my shake for dinner. Well it started an argument, I guess its not fair of me to ask them to eat out without me around. My girlfriend thinks Im selfish to expect them not to eat out when we are having busy days. My only request is for me to not be around to witness it!! I dont think its a huge request. Now I feel bad as if I'm making life difficult for my family. I knew the changes would be hard. I can't expect my family to completely change, But I had just hoped for more understanding & support. Can anyone relate? How would you react? Any advice or tips are helpful.

I’m single, so I don’t know your exact place, but of course you’re not going to expect kids to change their diets. I was on liquids over Christmas and I skipped my family celebration bc it mainly revolves around dinner. It’s super hard, and they don’t understand what you’re feeling. You may have to just go elsewhere while they’re eating, or have your gf pick up fast food on her own. Sorry this is going on. 😣
