  1. I’m 4 day’s post op, yesterday when at the office having my drain removed the nurse made a note to tell me I may have sharp pains in my left side if I haven’t already. It’s due to the surgeon having tied down part of the stitches in the RNY. I can’t remember the exact wording.

  2. I had RNY surgery Monday and today is Friday... & finally moved some of that dreaded gas!!!!

Had an appointment at the Dr’s office yesterday with the 3 other patients that had surgery Monday, I was the only gastric bypass, they were all sleeved, I was the worst for wear. But only 2 pain pills since out of the hospital. Drain was taken out yesterday also and everything is better being home!!!

Drinking my shakes and waters is going slow but it is going much better every day! Next Friday is the next appointment with my surgeon and will start soft foods.

On the road to a better life

  3. My surgery is tomorrow morning... I already know I will receive the nausea patch behind my ear (forgot the name). I also will have self administered iv pain meds after surgery (of course within time constraints).

I’m not nervous or concerned about the surgery itself. I’m just wondering how the tool and everything is going to work and effect me afterward.

Almost go time!!! July 18th is my surgery date and here I am up as usual worrying. How do I know if my liver has shrunk enough for surgery?? I started the preop up diet on the fourth and I’m down roughly 12 pounds. I don’t have high cholesterol so I’m not sure. I don’t know I’m just worried cause it’s getting close and I’m worried it’s going to get taken away from me again.

My surgery is tomorrow and I’ve only lost approximately 10lbs on the 2 week liquid diet. so I don’t know if if it’s me, my body type or what but I hope everything works out ok too!!!

Nibble Thanks. I am home. Was given meds to stop vomiting. No fever. Just nausea still and pain in my belly. I’m told it will get easier. Praying it does.

I’m glad you’re home and they gave you meds! In my pre op anesthesia advised I will have a nausea patch put behind my ear that should work for approximately 3 day’s. I’m hoping that will help.

I dunno if anyone wants to see this...but this is how anal my group is. LOL! We had to document everything. And we were forbidden from drinking more than one ounce every 15 minutes.

Have to say, though....I had an insanely easy recovery. Zero nausea. I have never vomited since surgery. All food advancements went smoothly. Could be luck, or maybe this protocol is a good thing? Hell if I know:)

(The X's are Clear Liquids like Jello, Water, tea, Decaf, Powerade zero....and the P's are Premier Protein)

I love this ... maybe not the 3am-8pm But it’s basically the same regime per my doctor’s office too! Great tips👍

Hi everyone, I just started today my liquid diet, surgery is on the 16th. How did the liquid diet go for you. Once I get the different liquids I can drink in reach I'll be find. I'm getting the Sleeve.

Hey there! I also started my liquid diet today for my gastric bypass surgery on the 16Jul. It went pretty well today, only felt hungry once.

I previously considered the sleeve but due to issues with GERD for many years I was advised RNY was the much better option.

What’s your pre-op diet? I only ate like 650/700 calories today because I could only stomach half of the pudding (it’s like two cups) and I’m so full now that I don’t want my last shake which would probably bring me to 900 calories. I’m hoping tomorrow when I get hungrier I can eat all the pudding for that day. I ate the Soup which again was huge and I had a Protein Shake and a bar today. I had a diet Snapple and plenty of crystal light (I always drink lots of flavored water). Are there ways to eat pudding? Is there anything I can do with it? I can substitute some of them for shakes which is probably what I will do. But then that’s 3 shakes per day which is a lot of liquid. Hmm I’ll try the pudding again tomorrow. Ah! At least I’m super full.

I don’t have to start the pre-op until 2 weeks out meaning the 2Jul, but... it’s a liquid diet. Which our doctor’s and dietitian’s have as: (see insert)

5 Protein Shakes a day, 8 cups of sugar free drinks/water (10 calories or less), unlimited sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello and broth.

we are not allowed pudding or creamy Soups in the pre or post op diets.🙁

Well I think it all goes back to the fact that we are all iindividuals. It seems to run the gamut from " I got out of the hospital, climb 3 flights of stairs, set my hospital bag down and then went to the mall. I feel wonderful!" to " I feel like I was drug backwards down a gravel highway. I have my Fluid and shakes next to my recliner. I get up every 2 hours to go to the bathroom, I lean forward and vomit up my shakes. I've probably lost weight but I'm too weak and dizzy to get on a scale". I'm apprehensive I'll be the latter, but I won't know until my day comes. In the meantime I just read everybody elses account. What is the saying? Oh Yes- Hope for the best---Prepare for the Worst. And that's the way the Wistful RnY- -er (ME) sees it all.

Exactly!!!!! You never can tell, just like any surgery in general I guess- it’s all taking a chance 👍

Yes, I am eating fewer than about 20g net per day from diet alone--mostly in the low teens. My Vitamins which are surgeon approved, gives about 12g of carbs with 10g of those being sugar alcohols/fiber. Celebrate Bariatric Vits.

Sounds good... I’m trying to prepare myself for what may happen. I don’t know what everyone is going through and trying to read up! Thanks

  12. I hope I don’t feel hunger like this after sleeve surgery - Because I have that trouble now after a big meal, hunger pains after 30mins!!! 😳

I haven’t had the surgery yet, 4 more months of doctor monitored diet.... but I know my doctor has repeatedly stated in discussion’s that carbohydrates are to be a thing of the past as of now and to focus mostly on Protein. Low to no sugar. And gave us a list of pre approved Vitamins, shakes, powders, drinks we could have before and after surgery. And also said when in doubt please ask at the center for adjustments off the listed items. We have pre op and post op list.

Don’t worry too much - even when I feel hungry and have food, the serving is still maybe 1/4 what I used to eat.

It is kinda hard to describe, but I don’t so much get full as... lose interest. Lose the drive to have another mouthful. Get distracted from eating. And so, stop.

This is a new experience for someone who binge ate until I was uncomfortable, BS (Before Surgery).

Thank you 🙏 I needed that!

I’m doing pretty well! Recovery was super quick for me. When they say to start walking ASAP in the hospital, they mean it. I think it helped a lot. Sutures healed super quick, no complications for me outside of gnarly reflux. All in all, loved them!! Good luck!

You say you had reflux...? Did you go with the sleeve or full gastric?

Just a heads up, My surgeon’s office is very strict on this. On all my pre op paperwork there’s a warning. You cannot gain during pre op. Check with your surgeon’s office. I asked my patient liason about losing too much weight at the beginning of the six months. She told me that the weight you are at your surgical consult is the one that they submit to insurance! I felt so much better.

If you’re required to see a dietician, I’d would start there. They will have tips and goals for you.

Focus on drinking enough Water. At least 64 oz a day.

High Protein. Aim for 80-100g a day. Keep carbs lower than Protein.

Eliminate soda and caffeine. You can’t have either for a few months after surgery (most say never again for soda).

Cut down on meals eaten out. Learn to cook new things or your favorites in a healthy way.

They will also tell you to start chewing each bite 30 times, and to start getting yourself used to having to stop drinking liquids 30 min before and 30 min after each meal.

Thanks! I don’t have many foods to cut out except sugar. I don’t drink anything but Water, a 80-120 oz a day. The struggle will be the 30 min time crunch before and after food. I drink A LOT with food!

I guess I need to talk to the dietitian or office nurse too.
