    January bypass buddies??

Thank you Lynn. Back in 1989 I had emergency gall bladder surgery and they did an appy and tubal ligation at the same time. Was supposed to be all done through belly button but woke up to a 12” cut straight across the tummy... I didn’t think I’d ever walk again without holding on to my stomach 😬 it was extremely painful but I lived through it and was back to work in half the time they thought. So I’m telling myself if I can make it through that then this should be much better! I’ve had a lot of surgeries over the years and just have to remember that they were all worth the pain ( foot/ankle, wrist, jaw, etc). I’m glad to hear you are doing well !!! I look forward to hearing more how you are doing.
  2. Thank you,,, I’ll keep you in my prayers that you’re will be very soon as well... when the nurse called me at work to tell me, I think she was more excited than I was!! Lol she said the best part of her job is letting people know that they are approved. She has also had the bypass and I like that she can relate to what we are going through. I had to giggle because I told her I didn’t really want the 31st as it was a full moon lol but I would take any day they would give me. Please keep in touch! I will watch to see how things are coming along with you. 😊
  3. Congratulations!!! I guess in all fairness I should explain why I didn’t want to go through with kaiser here in Hawai‘i.... they had lost their license and just recently got it back... this is scary enough with out that worry on my mind.. I know you will do great! We will have to keep in touch!
  4. I look forward to hearing how things are going after your surgery!! I did A LOT of research before making the decision to go through with this... but I’ve also had several surgeries in the past and know that once I’m healed I’ll be so thankful for having it done. Keep me posted!!
  5. I went to the seminar in July and got my referral from reg doc to start the program. My first dietitian appt was in August 2017. I also had to see the surgeon that month to be in he program. All was out of pocket until November 217. But some things are not covered at all by insurance so had about $450 out of pocket in December 2017 but that also covers the first year of seeing the dietitian, fitness person and nurse ,,, all who are working with the dr in the program. Only took 8 days to get my approval from insurance.. but I’m one of those kind of people who get things done before I’m asked which turned out well, because the insurance asked for ekg and chest X-ray due to my age but I had done then the day before they asked for it. I have a new reg doc and she was on board with this from day one and had already ordered those things. Yeah!!!! What I paid out of pocket is nothing compared to the happiness of the next chapter..... I know I will be sore after the surgery but I also know it will be worth it ...

    January bypass buddies??

Got my date!!! January 30th!!! So excited but I’m too alone and no family close by at all,,, I don’t usually write much here but do read what others are talking about...
  7. My insurance also required a 6 month supervised weight loss management, although when I started I was on a different insurance company that I would no way have surgery through them but knew I would have different insurance because of a new job I was getting. So I paid out of pocket for the first 4 months but glad I did. I also was worried that I didn’t lose enough or too much to still be able to qualify... what I was told was that they do go by your original weight, even if you should go under the BMI requirements that they know some of us just can’t keep it off without the surgery so no problem there. I am lucky that I only have about 100 lbs to lose, and being allergic to dairy helps me as I won’t have as much transition for that issue. I was worried when I felt I hadn’t lost enough for my monthly weigh in and appt with the dietitian but she said she saw that my muscle mass was going up and fat mass going down even though I wasn’t losing a lot of weight but over all the trend was going down.. that made me feel a lot better.. i am very blessed I have an awesome bariatric team where I am getting my surgery done. I think that is a huge help on this journey. i just found out yesterday that my surgery date is January 30th!!! But I still working on a goal weight I have in my mind before I get on the table! 😊 good luck and keep in touch!

Ok, how long to go down a trouser size?

Hi, I haven’t had my surgery yet but has been working on the weight in the meantime... I have about 12 boxes of clothes I used to fit in and are like new and excite to now only get back into them but into smaller sizes than those.. I’m also in between sizes and don’t want to buy any clothes which is hard because of my job (need to be wearing nice clothes)... I started wearing stretchy pants for those “in between” sizes. Luckily I had several pairs of those too from before.... my boss gave everyone a gift certificate for each of us at a very expensive mall and decided to get a nice blouse in a much smaller size for when I get closer to my goal weight.. (our Christmas dinner will actually be close to my birthday so thinking of it as an early birthday present for my future!! 😊

    January bypass buddies??

Hi Christel11, I’m also looking at end of January/ beginning of February... but I also wanted to say that I had noticed a lot of the programs require a 2 week liquid diet but the surgeon I’ll be having has people on a “liver shrinking diet” for two weeks (which is bacially what I eat now) and the day before surgery is the one day liquid diet... I would have been concerned about this but the hospital has won a lot of awards and he’s known to be one of the best surgeons in the US. So I’m glad for the one day liquid... they recommend drinking the isopure protein water... they also said to be trying different liquids for after the surgery as well.. I found the isopure but ended having to “cut” it with water as it is very sweet ... has 40 grams of protein.... good luck and look forward to hearing how it goes with you! ps... my birthday is January 12th and wishing I was having it then!! Lol

    Angry with myself

Khandir, it’s been awhile since I’ve been on the site but like you I like to read what others are going through and see if anyone else is having the same thoughts as myself. Dont beat yourself up over a small cheat, it was only 2 oz and it was protein... not a bag of cookies.. I just asked the nursing dept for the program I’m on at the hospital I’ll be having my surgery ( by pass) about the 2 week diet as well because I’ve been mostly on protein drinks due to a good allergy and finding your me to eat during the day ( stressful job). Yes, the 2 week diet is for shrinking the liver but my surgeon also has people on the clear liquids the last few days before surgery to keep any food residue from leaking into the stomach cavity and causing any infections... I’m glad he’s that thorough on this. But unless you had eaten a lot, I would just check in with your nursing staff and not beat yourself up over it and keep up the good work with your progress!!! Ignore the nay sayers and just know there are all kinds of sabotagers, just ignore them. Let us know how you are doing!

    Hair Loss

Hi everyone, I just got in the site and am pre op. Just found out yesterday my surgery will be in February or March. The hair thing is something I’ve heard about as well. I have done a lot of research before considering the surgery but would like to know more from actual people who have gone through it. Just over a year ago I lost my brother, now all that is left is my grown kids and grandkids.. it was a shocker and I lost about half my hair from this event. I have always had very long thick hair. I ended up chopping over 2 feet of it off because of how thin it had become. What was interesting is that the girl at the salon chopping my hair said that once I had lost a lot of weight from the surgery that I would be back to cut it shorter.. WHAT??? Lol she said that she had noticed that women who had the surgery just wanted to change their looks to match the new them... not due to hair loss... she has also had the surgery which surprised me.. amazing how many people have had it and I didn’t know it. So the moral of story is..... the cutting of hair I think is just part of the “make over” of the new thinner life.... but I have already started letting my hair grow back long again lol she’s still betting I’ll chop it even shorter next time.. after the weight loss..
