I am fat because that has always been my role. Fat Shelly. And you know what, I grew up in Jamaica at a time when no one had a real problem with fat, so calling someone Fat Shelly, like Fat was their title, was considered perfectly polite. In fact I was a teenager on a commuter flight from Kingston to Montego Bay early one morning, when a well dressed (blacksuit) gentleman saw me struggling with my little carry-on. He hurriedly stored his breif-case and then reached for my bag. He was so kind, and as he reached for the bag he said "I'll help you fatty." Thanx! Now, even in JA, it is no longer acceptable to be fat. But it is still my role. In describing siomeone, a member of my family might say "she is not as big as ...say Shelly, but she is a big girl." or "I am not going to get as big as Shelly, don't you worry." All of this while lovingly stroking my hair. Ahhh yes. Toxic love. And on my part, since I have always been fat, I have always had to appear to be dieting, or else be considered a real slob - one friend of a friend whom I barely knew once asked me "don't you care about your size?" when I ordered a burger in her presence. Everyone else was having one BTW. So anyway, my response to the constant appearance of dieting or trying to get my size under control was to stop. I just quit doing it on my own time. So I eat butter and icing sugar and sometimes butter with Icing sugar cause I can, and because I feel like I ought to be able to and everyone else can and it is soooo unfair. Real adult right? I must like the name Fat Shelly :Banane34:. But now I am on a path and this band, when I get it, will be my own secret, and I will own my weight loss and own my body..is that a weird thought?

Maybe we don't have conclusive evidence, but I think we have a clue... It's all in fun, I think. I am not sure anyone is losing sleep over Star and her WLS...That's why Star makes the big Bucks and can afford her personal chef and her personal trainers (:Banane34: read surgeon and surgery :rose:) because we are interested in her life...If we stopped being interested, she would be very concerned.

Right on Kel! Oprah, by the way, may be in the business of getting and staying rich, but she has been incredible about sharing her wealth, and deserves better than to be thrown in a bucket with Star Jones and gosh knows who else. Also, not for nothing, we know waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about Oprah. She spills the beans on stuff I would rather not know. So if she had surgery, trust me WE WOULD KNOW!!!!! Hi, does anyone rememebr the liquid diet? And the size ten reveal?

Yeah that's what I said. That is far more Oprah's style than keeping secrets.

Jenny Craig - and she lies! I know she was bigger than she is claiming she was. The camera may ad 10 lbs but my goodness. Oprah btw would soooo not lie about that. She would totally do a show about it - a series of shows - and give every body in the audience the option to do it and all kinds of stuff like that.

I think she had the surgery too. I guess the lawsuit angle is a valid one, although there is no cause of action if she doesn't endorse a particular method of weight loss - she could say "I did such and such because it was what my doctor and I thought would work for me." I think there is a benefit to her speaking out honestly. Women of color do not traditionally consider WLS as an option for us. We just don't. And I think that if Star were to come out and say that is what she did and it has helped her, it could go some way to reduce the stigma that is associated with WLS (whether we like it or not) - just my thoughts..

Betty, can you point me to where I can find your post on how surgery was done, and maybe the first couple of months after? Like Trina, I am a bit nervous about the whole deal (course mostly I am excited and fantasizing constantly about being able to hustle up the subway stairs without having to pant for half hour afterwards just to catch my breath )

Hi Cindy, Mine is 4 and she is not chunky yet. She is really conscious of the weight issue though because my family is insensitive, and probably because I speak disparagingly of myself sometimes. I really need to cut that out, because she has staretd to do it too. "Mommy, you are fat right?" Nice.... Anyhow, better than find nicer words to describe myself, I have decided to actually fix myself. So I went to Lawrence Hospital's website - they are about five minutes away from my house. The doctor I like best there is Dr. Davis. The whole program seems very nice. I've met one of the receptionists - Stacy - at the support group meeting. She was very smart and informed and nice. Tell me about you.

I am trying to get healthy and to be a good role model for my little girl. I have attended one support group meeting at Lawrence hospital - it was very good. The people who have already had syrgery were very supportive and healthy and happy. I would love the support that this kind of forum promises. Okay. so that's it then.
