My surgery is Dec 6th but my husbands surgery was last Dec he is 5lbs from his goal weight. He drinks at least 2 shakes a day. He lost all his weight in the 1st 6-8 month's. Protein is very important for you health, muscles and weight loss. There is a calculator app that will tell you how much protien you need for your specs.

I don't think that you can get too much Protein because your pouch is so small. The protein builds muscle and protects against loose skin and protects against Hair loss. I use GNC Amp 60 original Protein Powder and it has a statement on the label which says that the amino acid L-Carnitine is responsible for burning the fat and converting it to lean muscle mass. I really like that statement!

My surgery was Sep 6th and I have lost 60 pounds so far. I was told to sip on a Protein Shake throughout the day (do not use it for meal replacement) until I was able to get 60 grams of Protein per day and then to get off the Protein Shakes because it will slow the weight loss. I was also told to get off "SLIDER" food as of my 2 month follow up. I asked what Slider food was and was told it is anything with liquid type consistency that slides right through my pouch without stopping (I was eating cottage cheese for Breakfast and lunch and they want me to eat more solid food). They wanted me to eat more solid food so it would stay in my stomach longer and I would get more of the nutrients from the foods I was eating.

Johnny if you are referring to my response to the person who is 10 days post op and discouraged by not losing a large amount weight yet I would like to inform you that I am a Registered Nurse of 40 years. This is a fact that I have known for a very long time due to my research but last week we had physician attend our support group and someone asked a similar question as the person that I responded to. The physician said this exact thing. Before you leave irate insults you should have common sense to research first and make sure that you aren't the stupid one.

I am my 8th day post op. Still on the Protein shakes, and broths.... I am doing ok however I miss having solid food. I would by campbells Soup and be so tempted to eat some of the solids in it... I went out to lunch with my family and ordered Mexican Soup and didn't touch any of the solids .... my mind is playing tricks on me right now. I know the broth is sufficient right now . But I was so used to eating was tasty and mentally satisfying and it's been so long

Hello, I too am having tremendous pain on my right side. It happens when I move, cough, sneeze or lift my right leg. The nurse practitioner said that it's incisional pain. I'm on Tylenol Syrup for pain med and it doesn't work well. So I found on Walmart 's website a Tylenol syrup extra strength adult formula. It's 500mg per tablespoon and the dose is two tablespoon which is 1000 mg. Now this hits the spot! My doctor approved it. So now my pain is better controlled.

?? Did you have renal (kidney) disease going into this?? Did they admit you to address the severe anemia? I'm really sorry you're having all these issues! What state are you in?

Hello rte837 , yes I'm stage 5 end stage kidney disease . I was forced to have the gastric bypass surgery as a prep for a kidney transplant. The doctors don't admit to the hospital until the red blood cells drop to 6. I'm 7.2 so my doctor is treating me with a very dangerous medication called Procrit which is given by injections. I started my first injection yesterday. I hour later I was vomiting bile. The medical information given to me by the pharmacy says that this medication has a lot of side effects and may kill me. I'm feeling so weak and sick but I'm persevering. I'm happy to have lost 25 pounds. My start weight was 248. I'm at week 3 porable Protein. The doctors want me to weigh 165. Thank you for thinking about me. It is a struggle but people like you keep me encouraged. God bless you and have a great day.

Yes, I get my 3 shakes and 9 ounces of pourable daily. My blood count dropped from 9 which is anemic to 7.2 which is severe anemia. I have end stage kidney disease and my body is not adequately making red blood cells. I think that the lack of red blood cells is probably the problem. My doctor started a medication today that he hopes will stimulate red blood cell production.

first, do a search on the the "three-week stall". Almost everyone has their first stall within the first month of surgery. Mine lasted through week 2 and week 3. During week 4, the scale finally started moving again - and I dropped 6-8 lbs within a couple of days. Just stick to your program and the weight loss will start again.

secondly, I only lost 16 lbs the entire first month post-surgery. I know you read about people losing 30 lbs the first month, but they're the extreme. I've been on these boards a long time, and I'd say 15-25 lbs the first month is average. You've already lost 10, so you'll get there by the end of the first month.

Over the years long prior to my gastric bypass surgery, I had 2 hernia operations. I found them to be much more painful than my gastric bypass surgery. So I sympathize with you. After surgery many people report problems with sleeping, primarily because they cannot find a comfortable position. Some resort to sleeping on a recliner during the first few weeks. I found slipping a pillow between my legs helped me. Life right after surgery can be rough. It does get better each day but it does not happen overnight. It took me 6 months until I reached my happy state when all the problems seemed to melt away.

Perfect! That's what I want to hear! "I drink my Protein Shakes so I can relax and eat whole, unprocessed foods the rest of the time" is absolutely the right thing to do.
I keep playing around with my options so I can also enjoy these foods... but for me, relying on fish and a bit of eggs and milk will take the place of Protein shakes.
    My newest creation:
Breakfast: 1 egg, 1 cup Beans (22g prot.)
Lunch: 2 cups cooked veggies (have to eat in 2 sittings) (4g)
    Snack: nuts and fruit (8g)
Dinner: 2oz fish and small sweet potato. (16g)
50g protein! I always aim a bit over because the different types of beans and nuts don't all contain the exact same amounts.
I'll try it out.. not sure if I can squeeze in that much food or not...

I agree, I'm only 10 days post op, and my main focus is following Dr.'s orders to the letter! I want to heal good inside, as I read about the potential complications if things are progressed too quickly. I'm taking short walks outside, progressed to around the block (slowly) once or twice daily. That really helps too!

The way I'm thinking about it is this: the goal my first 3 months is to heal the surgery site. Just because I can't see it doesn't mean it's ok! So any food or drink is my medicine during that time (along with all the other stuff prescribed.) Losing weight is a bonus, but I want to focus on the part about healing. In the long run, gotta learn how to eat again...

Hello everyone,I'm a married mom of 4. I'm 260 pounds 5'7. Dealing with weight issues since I was 18. I started my journey on 7/28 when I went in for my initial consult and was told I was a good candidate for wls. My bmi is 40.5. So process started, I went through psych eval, support group, endoscopy, sleep study, exercise classes, blood work, nutrition appt. All of these appointments done by end of August. On 9/1 was my follow up appointment to make sure all of my criteria has been met. Everything was met, and they said next step would be them calling with a date. On 9/5, I'm scheduled for surgery on 9/25 (now I'm panicking, and nervous) on 9/7 I meet the doctor for a presurgery visit, it was going over what to expect pre/post. On 9/11 I have to go to hospital for preop EKG, and blood work, a long with my $500 copay I have bcbswny. Also I start my 2 week liver reduction diet. On 9/12 I go to primary to get medical clearance. Then it's just a waiting game until 9/25 @1pm. I'm excited, anxious, and nervous all at the same time. Anyone have any suggestions for pre surgery jitters would be great. Congratulations to everyone, especially the nsv I've been reading about

your story is even more encouraging than hearing from those who lost weight and kept it off. you show that it's possible to have a bad regain spell but turn that around and lose it again. making the surgery truly a tool that is as effective as you make it and not a "one time shot".
i did yoga a long time ago. it really does make you feel fantastic in so many ways. you have inspired me to start up again.
    congrats and best of luck.
