RNY-Fall-2017 got a reaction from Sweettoothless in Post Surgery Tastebuds Changes: tell me yours
I went in for my 1 month post op rny follow up today. I told my surgeon I was grossed out by crystal lite now, salt and popsicles & he said “that’s great actually because we’re seeing now that the surgical patients with these taste buds changes post op are actually doing better post op & are keeping weight off.” So it’s a good thing!😃 I was so happy!!
Just thought Ide share what he said at today’s appt, however, that’s not to say those who do not have taste changes cannot lose & keep weight off too. We all can if we keep to our program. Hugs!

Began this great journey at 238 lbs & 5’9”.
    1 year post op & I’m now 160 lbs.
That’s a weight loss of 78 lbs. Just wow.
I feel terrific in every way, no more blood pressure issues or meds, or sleep apnea, its been so much fun being in this body & just watching the weight drop off and having my health return! (Except....)Except 3 things....
    1) First, a totally new thing starting this week. Severe lower leg cramping a night, followed by aching muscles in legs for days so bad that I can’t even touch my lower legs. Thought I couldn’t take the leg pain/ache anymore & might even have to walk into a hospital or a urgent care.
I’ve read enough to know that it likely is Vitamin deficiency, and my 1 year post op blood work is TODAY, and then the follow up is coming up very soon, so I’m going to ge to the bottom of this. Have a feeling the results won’t be good.
    2) As far as other issues? Well I began having a beer or two about a month ago. Is it ok to have a beer daily? Why am I thinking (or remembering...?) not to ever drink...? Really..? Never..???
    3) What else...? Oh yeah, very tired of taking supplements. Easy to let it go for days & weeks a this point, so what are other long term RNY people doing as their daily or weekly routine for supplements? Currently I’m taking 4 chewable supplements a day, called “Optisource” from Walgreens. They taste good to me but I’m just curious what others are using because I may switch if there is a 2/day out there.
Thanks for the suggestions in advance! I want to say healthy so I appreciate your KIND advice!🙋🏼❤️Hugs, Jen

My goodness folks, thank you all for your kind words. I will try to heed the advice as well, I know it’s very serious! I will continue reading everything you all post.
Also, I did get blood work done this morning, (fasting labs) which the lab tech said should be back soon. So we’ll see what’s next here in a day or two. Afterwards I picked up some almonds, mixed nuts, bananas and Gatorade which I read are some good staples for us post op-ers. I’ll be making myself eat & drink better from here on out as well.
    ’Til next time,then thanks again.❤️jen

I’m 3 days post op and my tastes have changed. I used to put fruit punch Mio in my Water and it tastes bitter now. My go to Greek yogurt was pills triple 9 chocolate and that tastes terrible now. I’m also craving tuna and eggs (not together) which I’ve always hated and real crunchy iceberg lettuce.

Oh my gosh! Im so glad someone posted this because I wanted to talk about it.
Honestly I don't like much lately. Everything is entirely too sweet or too salty.
Im craving spicy all the time so I jazz up my veggies and Protein sources with Cajun spices. Most of the things I crave I get it, try it, hate it. Ive also started doing something I didn't use to. I smell everything before I taste it. Like hum...what IS THIS THING....Nope! Not going to like it.
Not only has my taste buds gone wackadoo, my sense of smell has gone haywire and I can smell everything a mile away. Not that I couldn't before but now its ultra sensitive. Last week an employee downstairs was cooking in our kitchen we have, and what ever it was made me nauseated to the point that I threw up an hour later just from the stench. Not to mention she was literally boiling everything in vegetable oil. UH!
I laughed with a friend because I used to eat everything now im ridiculously picky, to the point of annoyance.
    Protein Bars? Picky!
shakes? Hate them now so I moved to mixable "watery" type protein sources like Isopure. Only flavor I like is Grape.
    eggs? Yuck!
Soups? Picky as heck! Pretty much only vegetable minestrone no noodles. BC noodles taste like rubber to me.
Deli meat? Too much for me threw that up. System cant handle it.
chicken? Barely able to get it down.
Tried the infamous "Real Good Foods" & "Halo Top Ice Cream" both didn't agree with me at all.
So what am I living on? Chicken salad (tiny bit), tuna salad, ham salad (any kind of salad mayo type), Isopure Zero Carb, Quest Bars (ultra picky with these too), Quest Protein chips, Amy's Chili & Minestrone Veggie Soup, green Beans, Salmon (any types of fatty fish), Caulipower pizza, still looking for the perfect organic green juice with low fruit sugars even cold pressed like Buda Juice. Need to check the macros on it.
Just as an FYI - My surgery was 7/30 so im not super recent but it hasnt been very long either.

My entire life I’ve never been a beef fan. As an adult, I’d occasionally eat steak, but only if I made it myself at home (so many restaurants ruin good cuts with awful sauces or not cooking properly). I was always a chicken person...

Chicken now is difficult for me... and since surgery, I’ve been eating the hell out out of ground beef... tacos (without a shell, naturally), chili, etc.

Sweet stuff is also pretty unappealing now, but I was never a big sweet person before.

The only changes that I've noticed is that I don't really enjoy overly sweet things anymore; it's just too much for me now. I actually kind of like marinara sauce now; I don't eat it much, but I had some on meatballs post-op, and it was delicious; I didn't like it at all before surgery.

So just an fyi- don’t lose hope, your taste buds will all come back in due time.

I hated eggs for a whole year, i’m fine with them now. It’s just temporary.

You look amazing! And very happy!

Please don’t forget electrolytes have the ability to kill you. Potassium has a direct effect on the heart muscle and if there is a severe excess or deficiency it can cause cardiac arrest.

We need you around a long time. Take your vitamins!

I have been told no carbonated drinks ever again and that includes beer so I drink whiskey or rum or wine and my surgeon doesn't have an issue with that.
The supplements are for the rest of our lives! That is 1 rule that can not be bent or broken or you will have issues. I am 14 months post op and I take 2 chewable Multi Vitamins a day (one in the morning and one before bed). I also take 2 Calcium with Vitamin D every day around lunch time.

Not a RNYer so take with a grain of salt...
    1. Maybe electrolytes are off, especially potassium. Try that first to see if it improves.
    2. Alcohol is now absorbed differently creating the possibility of a new addiction where none resided before. Some call it transfer addiction but it can be just plain addiction too. Careful.
    3. Patches and gummies. If you can set it and forget it or it tastes like candy you may be more inclined to take them.
    4. Contact your team for everything big or small. Even if it's just an email. They should be able to guide you. Demand it. I'm sure you paid good money for optimal health.
Congrats! You look great and deserve to feel that way too.
    Safe Journey!
