  1. Losing a loved one is a very sad experience. My best wishes to your father, family and you. How will you be able to cope with this loss? Just remember your father would want you to succeed with your weight loss and to be as healthy as you can be. He most likely would not want you to go off the rails. So, when you feel the need to eat for comfort or emotion, take a step back and remember your father. Put down the bad stuff and look upward and say Dad thanks for being here for me and watching over me. Then choose a healthy alternative knowing that your father although physically gone will always be with you as long as his memory is in your heart. . My father passed away when I was young and every night before I go to sleep I keep him in my thoughts and close to my heart. Stay healthy for yourself and for the loving memory of your Father.

    Post your progress pics!

Great job everyone. The ladies before and after pics look like mom and daughter pics. Everyone looks so much younger. Good health and keep up the great work.
  3. At 5'6" 2 21lbs sleeved on 8/29/17 I'm down approx 60lbs in 10months. I made my goal weight and happy with results. As you see I didn't lose mega weight but enough to make me healthier.

    Wife not Supportive

I had rotor cuff surgery and it took me quite awhile to wake up from the anesthesia. Fast forward eight years, when I told my wife that I was getting WLS she wasn't supportive at all. She worried that I would not wake up this time. I told her that I was going ahead with the surgery (Doctors had no problem with the effects of anesthesia) and that if she wasn't supportive she couldn't be a part of the journey. I would find another family member to be by my side. After careful thought she changed her position. I'm so glad she did, I really needed her to be with me and to be a part of this. Sometimes it isn't lack of support but fear of the unknown that stops others from supporting us.

    Fast food

I learned a new phrase recently, "Rescue Foods" these are healthy foods/snacks you keep handy in case you need something away from home. Like my American Express card, I never leave home without it.

  7. This is something that I've found out for myself. Nobody made me eat the vast amounts of food I ate, I did it all myself. I am a compulsive overeater and even with WLS I will still be a compulsive overeater. The WLS has given me a great head start in the right direction but, if I don't control my compulsion I will be back to where I started before my WLS. That is why I sought help with Overeaters Anonymous (OA). It is modeled after the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. I go to meetings, call my sponsor everyday and most important I work the steps. I have said this in the past, there are many on here who can maintain the weight loss by themselves, I unfortunately am not one of them. I will never be able to eat like a normal person. If you feel that you need help, look for it and embrace it. I am only nine months out from my WLS, I don't consider myself a weight loss success just yet. I hope that I can maintain long term and stay healthy for the rest of my life.

    coffee

After six months I went back to one cup a day. Remember coffee is a diuretic. You should drink 64 oz's of liquids a day. Too much coffee and you'll be urinating it all away.

    8/25/17 sleeve updates

My surgery was on 8/29/17. I strated out at 221 and on my surgery date I was 211 and now I am at 158. My goal was to get to 165. I didnt need to lose mega weight but enough to get healthier, which I have. My weight will always be a struggle to maintain since I am a compulsive eater but I have found support and hopefully will continue weight loss success. Congratulations to all of you for your new found weight loss success and my sincerest hope that you maintain it. Not doing what's popular just doing what's Right.

    Refocus

Go to therapy. it's what it's there for. Get a little help with grief and dealing with your feelings about falling off the diet wagon so to speak. It can't hurt, and it might help a lot. Best wishes. Very sound advice. Most insurance plans offer a mental health component as far as coverage goes. Use every tool at your disposal for your successful new health. Can I have a half glass of Wine with a steak

Im nine months post op and I could not possibly enjoy a steak. If I ate one it would probably be 2-4 ozs at best and it would sit in my stomach like a rock. As for having wine with the steak, are you practicing no drinking 30 mins prior and 30 after your meals. During my support group sessions this topic is brought up frequently . The best course is not to drink. If you want to then its recommended you do so at least six months post surgery. Not doing what's popular just doing what's Right.

  15. I was tired all the time after my surgery. The first two weeks I was on a liquid diet. The reason for the tiredness was twofold. 1- My body was healing from the surgery and 2- I was only getting liquids. After a week and a half I started feeling more energetic.

    Protein Amount Needed

My surgeon wants me to have 80 grams a day minimum.
  17. A big Mahalo for sharing. It's important that we get the experiences of the veterans.
  18. Some of us have to face the realization that we are compulsive overeaters. I didn't realize this until I went on vacation and started eating pastries each day I was on vacation. This was six months after my WLS. In the past, it would not have bothered me as I rationalized that I deserved to eat the pastries since I did such a great job losing weight and that I was on vacation. Something clicked in me and I was bothered by my compulsive overeating. Upon my return home, I sought out a therapist who specializes in compulsive disorders. She told me that I was a compulsive overeater and I would fail my WLS. The WLS surgery will help me lose weight no doubt, but if I don't fix the underlying problem I will be doomed to failure. I have since joined Overeaters Anonymous (OA) and between my therapist and OA I clearly see what my problem is and I'm working on fixing it. In a way this forum helped me as well because there were people here that advised others to see a therapist. I took that advice as well. There are many here that can control their eating and I tip my hat to you. Unfortunately for me, I can't eat like a normal person and I have to work twice as hard at weight loss success. I wish everyone success and if you feel that you need help, please seek it out. Whether that help is a therapist, OA or a support group, you owe it to yourself.

    Managing Diabetes

On the day I was discharged from the hospital my Endocrinologist eliminated my four diabetes medications . She said with the weight loss you wont need them. She was right my type 2 diabetes is gone. I hope to continue to keep the weight off and to better my health. Not doing what's popular just doing what's Right.

    VSG candidate, boyfriend NOT onboard!

If your allow your boyfriend to pressure you into not getting this surgery then you will find you will not have a happy life with him. As sure as the sun rises and sets he will always pressure you to get what he wants. You will always then succumb to the pressure. That's not a healthy relationship. It seems you've postponed or put off the surgery many times. Could it be you didn't want a confrontation with your boyfriend and you used other excuses? You need to ask yourself one question and one question only. If the answer to the question is yes then you must do whatever you can to get the surgery. Will the surgery make me healthier? Simple question. If allowed to pressure you once he will continue to do so with other things. If he's looking to leave do yourself a favor and open the door and take the keys. Your good health, mental and physical depends on it.

    Practicing for the sleeve?

I wish that I had started to learn how to eat slower. After surgery I still ate fast (though much less) and that caused me pain and discomfort. I have since started to eat slower but, if I learned how to do it earlier it would have saved me some pain.
  23. I'm sure each person that has had WLS will succumb to a setback during their weight loss journey. We are after all only human. It's how we respond to those setbacks. Some continue down the same path that caused them to be unhealthy to begin with. Others adapt to their new way of life because the WLS has given them a jumpstart on weight loss and a realization that we can actually lose the weight. It's always easier to succeed when you have support but, in your case you will need to succeed due to your lack of support. Continue on weight loss journey. Do what is required to get the surgery. Plan for the wonderful life you will have post surgery but most of all don't be afraid to seek support. Support can be right here on the message boards, at a group meeting of fellow bariatrics or an organized group that helps to support your continued weight loss success. Do not feel as if you must do it alone. Once you succeed you can then pass on that success and support to someone else and you can continue the cycle of helping others. Good luck and hopefully as happened to another poster your husband will come around.
  24. Love a success story. Can you tell us how you were able to maintain success.

    Sleep question for post op.

I was going to sty out of work for a week. I extended it to two weeks due to being tired. After surgery our bodies are healing and add that we usually consume only liquids right after surgery, well we do get tired.
