  1. I have medicaid through PA. i have no comorbities but my BMI is 40. what steps and how long did it take to get it approved?

I can't speak for PA medicaid rules but I also have medicaid in CT. For some its 6 months of nutrition classes (mine is 7). I also had to do an ultrasound, a sleep study, and I have the upper endoscopy, cardiology, and psych eval coming up next year. First step is attending a seminar to find a surgeon. My surgeon had my insurance requirements available. Some have to call the insurance you find out your definite requirements. I hope this was helpful. Best wishes!

  2. Got'cha! I just started the process, my surgeon's office will be calling me this week with a referral for a nutritionist. I have actually been under a supervised weight loss diet/plan for over a year with Contrave medicine with my PCP, but I only had to visit once every 6 weeks(initially), then once every 3 months... not sure if the insurance will accept that, but we will see!

I wish you much luck during your process!

Thank you! And you should definitely talk to your surgeon about your previous nutrition classes just in case. I know most insurance companies want you to do 6 consecutive months of nutrition. If I miss a single month, I will have to start over. I go to nutrition class 2 of 7 in December. Hopefully, your previous nutrition classes will count towards required classes. Good luck!

  3. Thank you AnisaLeah for the feedback!

You're welcome! Oh, and I forgot to mention that my surgeon and nutritionist have both advised me to follow the diet but not to be perfect. Pretty much tiptoe it to show that I'm making an effort but not enough to lose too much weight and not qualify. I know that I can't go below 257 lbs because of my height on the bmi calculator. I'm nowhere near that but its good to know the lowest you can go without a co morbidity [emoji5]

  4. Does anyone know why insurance (UMR) requires a 6 month supervised diet plan? I'm just curious.... What if I lose weight during that 6 months, will I run the risk of being denied by the insurance because I no longer have the required BMI? I have a long history of losing weight on diets, but only gain it all back (plus some).

From my understanding, they want proof that you've tried to do this naturally. Also, to make sure you a are educated in your dietary lifestyle post op. My insurance requires 7 months of nutrition classes. Best wishes, good luck!

  5. I think across the board the start up process is the same, go to a seminar/find out who accepts medicaid. The harder part is finding out the medicaid requirements which differ depending on which state you live in. I'm in Connecticut and a few days after the seminar, I was contacted by the surgeon's office to come in for a consultation. At the consultation he discussed with me which surgery I was interested in, which he thought was best for me, and my eating habits. The surgeon actually gave me the list of requirements for medicaid to approve the surgery. 7 months of nutritionist appointments, psych eval, upper endoscopy, cardiology, ultrasound, and a sleep study. I'm about to do nutrition appointment 2 of 7, and have already done the ultrasound, sleep study, and have appointments scheduled for next year for the remainder of my appointments. Also, its best to have a referral from your PCP for Bariatric surgery. Best wishes and good luck!

  6. Everything went well and I️ am recuperating at my moms. Surprisingly, she’s been wonderful about everything! I feel blessed

Thought about you today, hope you're still recovering well! Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  7. Welcome to everyone! I'm fairly new to the forums myself (joined in September) and I love it here. Such a beautiful community. My insurance requires 7 months of nutrition appointments. I attend my second nutritionist appointment December 6th. Should be doing my last nutritionist appointment in May and will hopefully get a surgery date soon after. Best wishes to everyone and their personal journeys!

  8. Thank you Anisa! And indeed it is.. it is also your sleep study.. I’m guessing your bmi is lower than 40. I hope everything goes well In your sleep study. Let us know how did it go.

You're welcome! And thank you! My bmi is definitely well above 40 but my surgeon wants to be sure that I don't have sleep apnea because if I do, I will need the cpap machine for surgery. Apparently if you have sleep apnea it is harder to wake you from the anesthetic. I will keep you posted! And good luck on the 2 week preop diet, I'm sure you've got this [emoji5]

  9. I start this Tuesday and it makes me so excited cuz that means surgery is close by. I have tho of the cheating part and if I do it would be only one beer... is a welcoming party. [emoji37]
But i have done fasting before .. I can handle it!! ( I hope [emoji1374])

I'm so happy for you that you got your date! Tuesday I have to do a sleep study [emoji24] Just another step in this process! Cheering all of you who have a date on!

  10. I really dislike Sucralose ( Splenda.)
To the point that it makes me gag. My surgeon doesn't care WHICH I choose, as long as I get 60-70G of Protein and 800 Calories per day. I can't do that on Unjury unflavored powder.
I have tried Slim fast, Premier, Optifast, Muscle milk.
I am ready to CRY, how am I going to do this for THREE weeks?? Two pre-op and one post.
    Any suggestions?

A friend bought me a container of the syntha-6 whey Protein Powder (strawberry milkshake flavor). I mix it with 1% milk and I love it. Have you tried a powder instead of already made shakes?

  11. Hello! I'm scheduled for surgery December 19th (YAY!) but I'm nervous about the pre-op and post-op diets. I am an extremely picky eater - and I don't like any vegetables. It's a major setback and always has been but I try to make up for it in other ways. I trick myself into eating vegetables by loading fruit on top of greens in a smoothie and that works well but I don't want to live off of smoothies forever (sometimes I really get bored of them). I'm wondering how likely it is for my palate to change after surgery, I've heard it happens for some people.
    Any advice?

I can't speak from a surgery standpoint (I'm only on nutrition class 1 out of the 7 required by my insurance) but I also hated vegetables and used to do smoothie. I started exercising vegetables better after going meatless for 6 months. Cleansing my palette of meat changed my tastebuds so much. I eat meat again but I enjoy vegetables more. Have you thought about trying veggie burgers? You may tolerate them better. Congrats on your surgery date and good luck!

It was a long day but everything went well. I've been given a diet and exercise guide. Its time to put it in action. Hopefully I've lost something by the time I go to my second appointment next month. Excited and terrified at the same time!

  15. I don’t post on here much I mainly read and get advice, but I wanted to post about my progress I had gastric bypass in April 2017 a few complications with balloon dilation, 3 of them! But I’m so glad I had this surgery, it’s changed my life for the better. I can keep up with my 3 year old son better, work is so much easier, and life in general is better. I feel like I’m a happier person. Sometimes I still struggle with my brain, I think it still is sees the fat persons I once was, but I look at old pictures to remind myself no look you’ve come so far!!! My family is supportive as much as they can be but they all struggle with weight and eating with them is difficult. I usually have to bring something different.
I find it’s still hard to get the 80 grams of Protein my dr wants me to get but I try every day! I’ve mastered Water and vitamins!

The pictures are definitely inspirational and the community as a whole is beautiful! Thank you and will definitely keep posted! My first nutritionist appointment is tomorrow!

  18. Ahhh kinda like me! I don’t have them but my parents did.. and i know if i keep gaining i might get them ( God forbid for both us). Plus i dont know if i mentioned, i suffer from heartburn- which sleeve would’ve made it worse. My metabolism .. what is that? 🤣 mines has been on vacation since i was 21 especially after giving birth!

Yes! God forbid! And the heartburn is awful! Mine has calmed down but it was pretty bad. My metabolism died before I even hit my teen years, lol. And the aches and pains of carrying around extra weight is no fun either. I think we are definitely making the right choices for ourselves (and in your case, for your family).

  19. I’m super excited that I got my surgery date today! Saw my surgeon last week on Wednesday the 18th, at that time he submitted my paperwork to the insurance company for approval. I was anxious all weekend and expected to hear something by Tuesday, so when I got up and made some phone calls this morning. My first call was to the insurance company and was delighted to find out that they had approved me and had already sent the approval over to my doc. So, immediately I got back on the phone and called over to the Drs office and they set me up with a date for November 7th. It just seems so surreal!!

    Congrats! I'm so happy for you!![emoji322] [emoji322] [emoji322]

  20. Hmmm... not everyone that gets the bypass loose their ability for sweet as I️ have read and watch. But I️ also chose that one cuz of my family history with diabetes and high blood pressure, plus a higher chance of more weight lost.

I am just starting my process for bypass and I keep trying to explain this to a friend that bypass does not mean no more sweets forever. I have a relative who didn't even like sweets until after bypass and they don't make her sick. I have another relative who also has zero issues with sugae after bypass. I started the process considering the sleeve but eventually opting for bypass because of my family history of diabetes and high blood pressure. I don't have these things but I do not want them either. Also, my surgeon believes this is the best option for me because I have a metabolism problem. I don't eat much but I still gain/retain weight. Best wishes on your journey [emoji5]

  21. I just had my first visit to the surgeon two weeks ago and since then had a echocardiogram and gallbladder ultrasound and the endoscopy is scheduled, if you don't mind my asking how come it took a year I really hope mine won't take that long :/ congrats tho! My dad had the lapband and I knew it wouldn't be for me

I'm just starting my journey too. Had my first surgeon visit on 10/13 and have the abdominal ultrasound and first nutrition appointment coming up on Monday. Pulmonary appointment on Tuesday. February upper endoscopy and a March cardiologist appointment. Because of my insurance the process takes 7 months (7 nutritionist visits). I also wonder why the the OP had such a dragged out process. Wishing you both the best on your journeys
