TheMrsV got a reaction from fruitandveggies in Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis
I am currently reading the book and have started making the change to vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. I love the book! Since my sleeve surgery I haven't been able to really tolerate much Protein and would get most of my daily amount from shakes. I have been so confused on what I should eat even after almost 3 years. So I was excited to know that I there is an alternatives and that it's ok to not have so much protein especially since it doesn't set well with tummy . I have had on going digestive issues and feel the main cause is dairy. I have cut out dairy and most meat protein for the last week and a half. I am proud to report that for the first time in months I have had almost no issues with digestion. WOW! So happy there are like minded bariatric people to share with.

I am 3 years 3 months out and Reached goal by one year and maintained. I was at 123 and became vegan and I have dropped to 110. But I still have my bloodwork drawn and everything is fantastic. My Protein levels are perfect and I really enjoy the lifestyle.

I changed my Protein Bars and shakes to vegan but I don't use them much because I cook all the time now.

Yes the book does make sense. I figured I would just start out with baby steps and just go without dairy first week. Well without even trying , I went without dairy, meat, and artificial sweeteners. Honestly, Meat wasn't that hard as I already have issues with digesting meat. I love cheese though, and I was surprised that I didn't even have any all week and really didn't realize it. I did have a headache BUT the tummy issues improved. I will gladly deal with withdrawal for a few days for long term better health.☺️ Oh and I made my first batch of quinoa last night , very good I must say. I added sauteed zucchini, and spinach, and sauteed celery for some crunch. Added a little soy sauce. It was delicious! I was nervous as I have not had rice or Pasta in 3years. I gave it up because those were my trigger foods so wasn't sure how the quinoa would make me feel. But it's more like cooked cream of wheat than rice so I didn't have the heaviness in my stomach afterwards. It was great!

I do tons of quinoa. That's my go to grain. It really is wonderful in just about anything. Congrats on the eliminations! I think as time goes on you'll find it much easier to forego the cheese. I do love cheese too, but I haven't used it much these days besides one of last week's meals. Another benefit is that it's great on the pocketbook! 😊 Eating healthy isn't expensive, at least for me.

I always had tummy issues before going WFPB. I don't anymore unless I decide to eat something that has a lot of cheese; so I stay away as much as possible (except my yummy black bean nachos-of which I'll definitely opt for the tortilla nuked in the microwave next time!!). It's nice not having issues in He gastrointestinal area and such. Your body will be so happy about it too.
I'm happy you're reading the book! It just makes sense, huh? 😁

I have used both the freezing and the bake the cubes in the oven method..lol.. Both turned out equally well. I have seen some recipes call for pan frying, but I have avoided that method because I figured it would add the most fat to the meal.
I like tofu and the only thing I would recommend is to buy organic non-gmo.

My fave way to prep tofu is to bake it into cubes. You can throw it into anything and it's tasty! The keys are this though:
Buy extra or extra extra firm tofu (not silken) Pressing out all the Water first (I have a tofu press, but you can also use two plates with a heavy thing stacked on top) Freezing (at least a few hours) Thawing Marinating The freezing gives it the best meaty texture, it's so much better that way, IMHO. You can marinate in anything you like (check out this page for a few ideas), or you can just toss in a bit of olive oil and bake for 25 mins at 400 degrees (and check here for more details).
One other tip, if you want to make something like a tofu scramble (a vegan classic--here's a few recipes), don't press and freeze. Just drain the extra water from the box and throw in your pan, breaking it up into crumbles as you cook.

Welcome @TheMrsV. We are all learning here. I have been transitioning over to a WFPB diet for almost 4 weeks now. It is definitely trial and error as I learn a new style of cooking. I am fortunate To be far enough post op that I can eat most anything and I am Doing fine with Protein levels. Most days I am hitting 45-55g. Some days I even hit 60g. The thread starter @Newme17 was the person that got me started on researching a healthy diet. I am thankful.

Tofu broccoli, snap peas, and carrot stir fry. I used a stir fry sauce that is low sodium and only 3G of sugar per serving. It was delicious. I think I am learning how to do tofu. My dh was a happy camper 😊

Hi there! Scheduled for revision from sleeve to RNY due to severe GERD. I've been vegan since October 16. I absolutely love plant based diet. Currently using Raw Fit Protein which is a vegan Protein Powder. It has 28 grams of protein and taste great. Looking to connect with a mentor or mentors that follow a plant based diet. Totally fine connecting with those that aren't as well.

I've said it before here somewhere on BP, but after eating a bowl of oats or lentils are you still craving more??? Nope! Are you craving junk foods? Nope! complex carbs are good for you. I wish folks would differentiate what carbs they're talking about on here too, instead of lumping all the good ones in with the bad, simple, processed ones. They're not the same.
I just finished a bowl (a tiny bowl obviously) of coconut curry lentils with brown rice (check out the pic and the recipe on pg 25 I think in the Proteinaholic thread), full of good complex carbohydrates and fiber <---- which we Americans definitely need. I won't be hungry for a while and I'm sure not thinking about a donut or chips.
There is a doctor who says the question shouldn't be "where do you get your Protein? " But rather "where do you get your fiber?" There is only 3% of Americans who are protein deficient, we don't have to worry about it at all really (even if on a plant based diet---even my labs showed my protein levels were good) but most people have a fiber deficiency; I want to say high 80's percentage wise (don't quote me, but I know the number is high)....and where do you get fiber? Plants. Fruits, legumes, and veggies.....healthy complex carbohydrates.
And if I need to breakdown how complex and simple carbohydrates breakdown in our bodies, then I will. Other than that, I hope most take the time to educate yourselves on how complex carbs and fiber is needed in our bodies.
