Gastric Leak for 6 Months - Help!

Original stitch fail is how I became septic. When emergency surgery was done to clean out sepsis they tried repairing with new stitch but it also failed.

Gastric Leak for 6 Months - Help!

I am still on strict liquid diet, same as they had me on just before I left. Isopure drinks, broth and medically prescribed shakes. I'm feeling ether each day.

    Complication

I'm so glad you are beginning to turn the corner TXShannon! Since my last post here I returned to ER with concerns about a foul odor and one of my JP drains. Luckily, more blood work and some Electrolytes they indicated I was ok and the drains were doing their job. Yesterday, I decided to remove all bandages and clean and redress them. Good thing I did! As someone who managed an orthopaedic surgeon office for 20 years, I'm very familiar with wound care (thank God!) I removed the bandages and found rotted flesh and pus. I carefully debrided the dead tissues, cleaned and recleaned everything. Most incisions looked good/great after thorough cleaning, but I do have one small incision it wanting to close and it's worrisome. I woke just about a half hour ago feeling like a burst sensation. I was alarmed, but somehow I feel better? Hang in there TXShannon! I'm with you on this journey. God bless all well wishers too! [emoji1317][emoji1317][emoji1317][emoji8]

    Complication

Had my sleeve done 7/13. Went to ER that Wednesday and was sent home with diagnosis of pneumonia. Returned following morning unable to speak or breathe. I was admitted and transferred to hospital where surgery was originally done. Immediately they did CT and X-rays, also blood tests. I underwent emergency surgery for small leak, abdominal pus and fluid clean out. I had sepsis! So I remained in hospital until 8/12. I had a thoracentesis performed to remove 400ml of yellow/amber fluid from left lung. I have two JP drains in my stomach for drainage of more fluid/pus. I was on O2, IV antibiotics and vitamins, given a pain pump and had blood drawn 1-2x everyday. As of 8/11 they had removed me from O2, IVs and pain pump. I asked repeatedly to go home where I would be comfortable and able to heal, but no. So I left AMA and thankfully my surgeon has been kind and understanding providing me with at home pain meds and antibiotics. I'm still only allowed liquid diet though and I'm ok with that. I feel your worry and frustration. I pray we both heal quickly and thoroughly [emoji1317][emoji1317][emoji1317]

Gastric Leak for 6 Months - Help!

I just had GS done on 7/31/17. I went home the following day only to go to ER on third day not able to breathe and very flu-like. I was sent home. Returned to ER again next day and transported to hospital where surgery was originally performed . CT scan and X-rays revealed leak. Emergency surgery performed and discovered sepsis and fluids from my pouch. It was cleaned and drains installed. Stitch did not hold to repair leak. I left yesterday AMA. I'd rather be in my home and comfortable surroundings. I slept well and doctor has provided me with at home antibiotics and pain meds. Left shoulder has been in intense pain and unrelieved by cold, heat or pain meds. I will see my physician on Wednesday to assess what I should do.

    Horror Story

I'm saddened to hear this. It also has me terrified. I had my sleeve done 7/31/17. I've been overweight 25 years, and have high BP, use a CPAP and show signs of prediabetes. My sister in law had her surgery done 18 months ago and looks fabulous! My girlfriend had lapband 6 years ago and also had good results. I was released to return home on 8/1/17. I felt fine other than the usual aches and pains. The following day (Weds) I felt achy, feverish and like I was short of breath. We drove to the local ER and were sent home with a "possible pneumonia " diagnosis and a Z-pack prescription. By 6 am Thur I couldn't breathe and my body was filled with horrendous pain. We returned to ER, but I was kept and transported down into the hospital where my original surgery had been performed. I was promptly admitted and tested. CT with swallow test shows small pouch with a leaker. Everything I had been eating was draining into my abdomen. ☹️ Emergency surgery was scheduled that night, two drains placed and rounds and rounds of "banana bags", potassium and antibiotics! Unfortunately I do not have good veins, so my arms are taking a beating. As of this morning, 8/12/17, I'd had enough of being in the hospital. The bed is killing my bursitis, I'm bored to tears, tired of getting poked and they had essentially disconnected me from everything. I'm even back on liquid diet x 3 days. And every day being told I'd go home tomorrow. I left against medical advice even though they kept stating "one more day." I had enough. I came home, slept comfortably in my bed and am managing my needs with help of my family. My doctor called in some more antibiotics and home meds and stated he's not thrilled with my decision to leave, but will not leave me without care. Truly, if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have done the surgery... Period! ***DON'T DO IT!!! ^^^
