    Surgery on 4/11

    I know i will sound like a broken record but distract distract distract . anything to get out of your own head. Movie, Books, games, puzzles it just does not matter what as long as you are thinking about something else. A great chance to start a new hobby. Work on the water. As long as you stay hydrated everything else will come with time. Avoid T.V. to many food reminders constantly blasted at you. you are at a very important time. The coping skills you develop now will help carry you thru the next months. Right now at this early stage it is all about the mental game. The first weeks with all the restrictions can seem endless but they will pass and you will progress to better options and you will get to enjoy food again. Not in the same way as before but in a new way that is just as enjoyable. good luck and stay strong

Distract distract distract. watch movies, read a book, start a jigsaw puzzle anything to get out of your own head avoid T.V. to many food reminders and while the weather sucks try to things a round the house to get exercise. several youtube video's that show how to use common household items to workout. i do counter top push ups while i wait for coffee to heat in microwave. as many as i can do in 90 seconds. gets the blood pumping and make me feel good.

My surgeon uses 60% of excess weight to call it a success. i think it differs like a lot of the process. and the results vary widely as seen in post yesterday with pics of guy that has lost 1/2 total body weight. amazing results and he is not even finished yet. add * here " all results are personal and very variable" and to your last question yes i think 100 ponds is doable for your height and weight it may take the 18-24 months to get the last 25-30 pounds or so but it is possible

I still avoid stores with a bakery in the morning because the smell of fresh bread freaks me out. i had such an addiction to bread it was unreal. i just avoid the bakery's now and skip the bread cause that is a place i never want to go again. the sight of sweets and breads doesn't have the same effect once the smell is gone. i can cruise thru the bakery area on my way to something else without a second look but oh lordly let me smell that bread baking and i have a very unhealthy reaction. just one of those things.
  7. most likely the a1c right before surgery is more for the surgeon and hospital so they know what kind of things to expect during and right after surgery. They really don't like surprises. Its unlikely to cause them to cancel a surgery as long as you do the pre-op steps they ask for. this is major surgery and a diabetic issue is one they want to avoid or at least be prepared for ahead of time. i see it as more a precaution than a go or no go test.

    frustrating

    it is and can be very frustrating. trying to focus on the longer term is tough to do all the time. i would suggest if you have not done so already. dont weigh yourself to often. At the start it was fun to see the pounds fall away almost daily but that feedback loop works against you later as things slow down and seeing the same number drags you down emotionally. step away from the scale and look to other things for positive feedback. your clothes how you look and feel after a good workout. how much energy you have to do things you struggled with before anything non weight related that makes you feel good.
  9. Haz your are eating Normal. The problem we all have or had is we dont know normal when we see it anymore. never eat on a dinner plate again. use a salad plate to give the visual of a full plate. The Portions given during eating out ARE NOT NORMAL. That is a big part of the Mental changes you have to work thru to ensure long term success. Hopefully you will never again in your life Eat that old Normal again. Nothing written above stops you from going out and eating with friends and family. You just have to change how you look at the food and portions you encounter when you do. Skip the dressing , pass on the bread and order tea or diet soda and you can eat almost anywhere and just bring the leftovers home and turn them into lunch for work the next day. You can and will have as normal a life as you want. Hopefully it will not be the same normal as before surgery.

    Fatgirl its so much more than just calories in calories out. If it was that easy we wouldn't have so many people failing at dieting all the time. the calories will matter after everything else is right but not much before. so the basic's no added sugar keep carbs low (carbs are just sugar in fancy wrapping paper) keep up the protien and dont fear the fat - fat makes you feel full and easier to get to next meal NO Snacking - all food raises your blood sugar and all blood sugar raises your insulin and elevated insulin blocks fat burning. track your food - lots of free app out there to track your macro's and calories use a food scale - do not trust packaging. they are allowed to be off by up to 20%. walk walk walk and then walk some more. Then lift something. nothing fires up your body like some weight training. We are not talking body builder just push those muscles and let them fire up your metabolism. Keep positive. very good things can come from this surgery but they dont come at the same pace for everyone You need to plan to play the long game and know that 18-24 months from now is your goal not just today. good luck

    frustrating

    Are you still tracking your food on an app? do you still weigh the portions? have you let carbs slip back in? are you doing the exact same exercise routine. Change is good keep the body guessing. Inc the portion of workout that is weight training Lots of small things can stall you out. AS the others above noted the closer you get to goal the harder and slower each pound comes off. good luck and try to stay positive this stall takes nothing from what you have already accomplished.
  12. Dude Your rockin that surgery. If your surgeon doesn't have up on his wall as the poster child for WLS he is crazy. You have really took the ball and ran with it. amazing just plain amazing. i hope you are enjoying the new you and the new life opportunities that have opened up to you. Dam just looking at your post makes me smile. This truly is life transforming. thank you for the post and good luck going forward
  13. Oh PoMo , i am without a doubt the very last person who should be answering your post. All the advice you seek is in your post. dont eat every 2-3 hours cut out the sugars increase protein increase water add exercise after the surgery it is all a mental game and you have to commit to winning the mental game or the physcial one is lost. Start by cutting out the sugars then the refined carbs- if its located in the middle of a store it is not a good idea. replace with protien and start walking and dont stop. walk all the time as much as you can whenever you can. drink water pls. If you have to add 0 calorie flavors to help. Last - Dont Surrender come back everyday and lets us know how you did and how far you walked and google wls support for you city and find a grp of local people going thru this so you can feel connected. Just dont give up

    1 Week post-op and failing

    You are 1 week from having a very major surgery. everyone heals and recovers at a different pace. Nothing but water is a Must. everything else is a "as you get better thing" When you feel better (not if) cause you will get better with time you will add in the protein and then work thru the rest but your PA was right it is all normal cause normal is a huge range and not everyone gets back to food at the same pace. Relax and work on liquids. dont force anything on a artificial timeline. Every average has people on both sides of that supposed average. Find your own pace and get comfortable with it. listen to your PA and try to enjoy the next part of your life. Dont sweat the small stuff and at 1 week post op if you are not dehydrated it is all small stuff. drink up and enjoy good luck
  16. try varying the temp. it is really personal. some like colder but others find a warm or hot liquid easier to tolerate. and remember it doesnt have to be plain water. If warm is easier try herbal tea. if cold is your thing i saw great suggestion in above posts. just mix it up a bit and see what works for you.

    Exercise and Calories

    I think your first thought on increasing meals is correct but try to offset increased calories by removing or decreasing snacks try to move last calorie intake up to 7 or 8 then nothing but water or black coffee till morning. make sure you have that fat spread out to all 3 meals to make you feel more satisfied after each meal. and go with a bulk type food between meals like baby carrots or celery if you can tolerate them and they are ok with your surgeon. good luck
  18. telling someone they are doing great and dont sweat it the food you eat does not matter is much worse than asking someone what the hell were you thinking. blowing sunshine up his ass will not help him. You dont do him or yourself any favors by just trying to paper over what is clearly behavior and that habits will hurt him now and in the long run. let me guess how he put the weight on in the first place. eating fast food - oh he is still doing it eating processed carbs - oh he is still doing it. wow - cant even guess what the outcome from that will be.
  19. a month out from surgery i was barely working to semi solids solid food didnt start till week 6. seems odd how you are surprised that most people here spend weeks on full liquid thru solid food transition. I see very few post by people who came home and started eating subway and starbucks. and the poster is 4 weeks now but he did not say that he ate his first subway starbucks or chips just today. He clearly implied that this had been his diet so it had stated before he was 4 weeks out. That is what has everyone so shocked he didnt start it 4 weeks out he was already eating it 4 weeks out

    deep breath, relax you will make it and it will be alright. you listed 5-10 pounds that means 5 pounds will do it. you will make that. if you truly are not there towards the end then just fast for the last 24 hours and push yourself over the top. try very hard to keep your stress level down you are almost there and its going to be great very soon. except in cases of a very fatty liver pre surgery weight loss is not the all powerful decider of go or no go good luck and grats on making it this far and i look forward to you dropping back in to tell everyone how it went and how you are doing after surgery.
  21. i guess we are all different. when i looked over that food list it really seemed amazing i mean the only thing i could reference it to was my own eating post surgery and i remember how sick i felt after 3 bites (teaspoons) and how i would have to get up and walk around just to get the heavy feeling to pass. i really do feel bad for this guy cause i dont see the level of support from the doctors that i see people talk about. So i dont know if the doctor let him down or if he just ignored everything they said but i dont believe for a second that subway, chicken wings and chips were on his doctors handouts about post surgery nutrition. i just dont see a success story being written here and i hope the poster spends so time reading the old posts to get an idea of the proper post surgery habits he needs to learn. The window to learn those new habits and get the max benefit is not open ended but is also not closed by a mistake or two if action to remedy those errors are put in place.

    Overwhelmed!!!

    hey nurse. no judgement i promise I to was addicted to carbs and spent 2 years trying to cut them out as my doctor asked but i could never do it completely or for long. i just simply couldnt do it. it was the worst feeling ever. i had never had any kind of surgery in my life and the thought scared the hell out of me. but you know what else i knew. i was killing myself slowly but surely i was digging my own grave. i did the whole pre process with as little thought as possible because i had to stay out of my own head or i would talk myself out of it and that had only one ending and it was a headstone before i was 60. Today i can tell you i have never felt better in my life. i feel like i remember feeling in my 30's. what little of my 30's i can remember. sleep apnea stole most of my memeors from the last 5 years and really mixed up lots of others. high blood pressure and diabetes might have killed me before the sleep apnea stole my mind but i didnt want to find out. There is a future at the end of this path please chose carefully which future you set for yourself
  25. Elsee, look out toward the horizon. can you see that microscopic dot? that is the point in which " calories" will be important. Water is life Protein Fat thats it those are the only 2 macro's that your body cant live without Please note that carbs are not a macro (they are just sugar in fancy packaging) follow your doctors plan for fluids and protein and try to get that calorie thing out of your head. your body will signal its needs as you progress out from surgery. just use this time to learn read those signals and then how to meet the needs with proper eating habits. If you get all that right then the calories will be at the right spot all by themselves. 600 well balanced calories is fine and it will grow slowly as you get further out. i use fitnesspal app to track my macro's and log my food and i have gotten used to that poor app writing in RED cause it thinks i am starving to death. (lol) good luck and try to enjoy the journey you are one. its a pretty wonderful one in my opinion
