So - I fessed up to dieting. I said I was working with my medical team to get healthier and was on a very strict diet, if I was asked. Generally at group events, I wasn't - e.g. conferences with multiple meals with other members. No one is looking at the food on your plate. Just push it around and re-arrange it to make it look like you are eating it. Cut things up and move stuff around - you know like you did when you mother gave you something you didn't like as a kid.
As for the rest - I answer the question the same way after 2 years and 150 pounds from my highest pre-surgery weight - I worked with a medical team. I eat a diet that is very high in Protein and have given up processed foods, white flour and all non-fruit based sugars. I do not drink soda or alcohol. I exercise at least 1 hour a day and log every bite of food with an app to be accountable. It hasn't been easy but it has been worth it.
Generally, as soon as they hear you've given up sugar, bread, Pasta and booze, they run for the hills and change the subject.

Tell them you were born with 3 testicles, only 2 descended, they have to go in and find where it went. Or you got a boil the last time you wore a Speedo and you want it fixed so you can go on a Caribbean cruise. Or tell them you're having a sex change, you're going to keep trying, until you find one b you like. That ought stun them into silence.🎭

I'm still early on in the process, but I've only told my parents, my husband, my best friend and my cousin (who is more like a sister). I'm wishing I hadn't told my friend because she sort of tried to talk me out of it. Even though she had Lapband back in 2010. I don't think I'll be telling anyone else honestly. I'm sure people will find out. It is what it is, I just don't want to have to explain my choice to people. I'm pretty good about being like "cool bye" when people give me their unwanted opinions. I used to do network marketing and heard crap all the time from judgy judy's and let it slide off my back. This is a bit more major though - and I know a lot of people would be judgmental. I actually had a hard time telling my husband to start - he's very judgmental and I knew his initial response was going to be negative. He's come around now because it's more of a health decision than anything. I think it's a personal decision whether you tell people. It truly depends on the people in your circle, how you handle criticism, and the level of trust you have in people.

I just wanted to share my excitement with all of you who are pre-op. I am down 17lbs in just 10 days after surgery (this does not include any weight loss prior to surgery because I didn't have a weight loss because I was not required to diet prior to surgery). YOU CAN DO THIS!!! All the pain and the hunger and the worry, it's ALL WORTH IT!!!!!!! Keep striving towards your goal, we can all get there and this surgery is the way to do that!!!!

I just had my first Nutrition meetings.
My health care provider puts the first one in a group setting and then from there you can choose to go solo. I didn't mind the group until well.. they started talking.
Out of the four of us, one woman was so sweet. She was working for the local food bank and offered free vegetables to anyone who may be lacking in the funds to buy them. Quickly, the other lady jumped, and said, "Do you ask proof of income before you pass out those vegetables?! My company donates a lot of money to that group and I know people show up in fancy cars." Umm.. ok, well maybe that is true, but we are here for bariatric surgery information. Free veggies seems a worthy mention for some.
The group leader moved ahead in a smart way and soon we were all looking at her drawings of two stomaches, one cut for bariatric sleeve surgery and the other bariatric bypass. She did a great job at explaining each and what would happen with each. Well done.
"What?! I am confused. Explain that bariatric bypass again." Apparently, Negative Nattie, who wouldn't give a carrot or squash to a poor person in a nice car, has no idea what bariatric bypass surgery entails.
The sweet group leader explains again how small the new stomach would be. "Thats bananas!!", Negative Nattie yells.
I am amused. Really, you came this far and you didn't know this? Food bank woman is politely smiling as she knew most of what was being explained.
The sweet group leader then asks me to hold up a measuring cup of 1/4 cup.
"That is how much food your new stomach will hold?!?" Negative Nattie grabs it and said, "How are we suppose to fit in Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, mash potatoes, stuffing, in that?!"
And that, I now see, is why they enforce Nutritional Counseling before the surgery. Because even the "smartest" "professionals" sometime don't google the basics.

Welcome! I very purposefully did not do "food funerals" because I didn't want to be obsessing over what I couldn't have. I just kept telling myself I couldn't have it for a while but in the future.if I want a bite then that is ok if I have met my Protein goal. Then I don't have that panic of thinking I will never get to have a favorite food again. My psychologist said 1-2 bites is reasonable, and if you can't stick to that, you just tell yourself you need a break from it until you can stick to that. The VSG has helped me feel satisfied with just that when before I needed to binge on the while thing.

It's been very rough for me and I can relate my mother and sisters were very cruel to me and always made fun of me because of my weight. To date my sisters friends don't even know that we are related I feel as though by doing this I am taking control and very happy with the decision I have made

It's a mental mechanism others develop to assume that all calorie controlled diets with exercise are easy and that I (and 95% of other grossly obese and morbidly obese people) are just not trying hard enough.
Over the las t 40+ years, I have watched some formerly very skinny and some average weight people become overweight then obese. I see their eyes when I say, "I know it's hard to diet for long periods of time, eh? ... harder than you used to think, eh?"
Some do begin to empathise ... but not all.
    - - -
People who tell me my upcoming gastric sleeve op is cheating get both barrels from me.
I emphasise that I am spending megabuck$ to buy the advantage ... i.e. paying a direct price for all my failures at dieting because I want to "get in the game" and end the medications, the painful joints and the combined negatives of hal a lifetime of obesity.
Thanks for reading my 10c worth.

So the "coordinator" said it was unlikely for you to be approved. Sounds like to me she's not doing her job. A coordinator job is to help you stay on track with meeting your requirements fo r your insurance. Him/ her gathers all your paperwork work and submits it to your insurance company for approval. Your coordinator has no right to make a pre judgment on wether she THINKS you will be approved or not. Th e coordinator are not the ones who approves you for surgery. And you are correct as long as your BMI is o
40 or over uo u do not need any cormobilities. I would advise you just to let your coordinator know that you still want your information submitted to your insurance company and let them tell you that you are denied. And if you are you can ask questions. Ask them why a d what do you need to do to get approved. I would not accept what th e coordinator is telling you. Sometimes if you want something for you have to do it yourself. Everyone does not have your best interest at heart...... I wish you th e best of luck on your journey. [emoji5]

The surgical coordinator shouldn't be the one to say if something is "wrong" with you. Get copies of what was submitted and find someone more compassionate to talk with at the insurance company. Tell your primary you are tired all day and don't get enough sleep. Tell them you are concerned you have apnea. Have your primary write you a script for an at home sleep study. Is your BMI still over 40? Are you prediabetic? Do you have high cholesterol or arthritis? Keep track of how you feel and keep following up. They will eventually clear you if you meet requirements.
