I don't have issues with GERD. My surgeon is pretty respected and has been doing this for a while. Patients travel from out of state to see him. Even patients who are too large to walk and need medical transport see him. I'm interested in the differences of living with say a bypass vs sleeve? Maybe that's best to look over the bypass forum. If I need to have the hernia surgically repaired, I think I would want to have a revision done as well and hopefully do it in one surgery. I think I got the hernia because I gained so much weight.

I agree with greentealael and considering you dont have issues with GERD a DS may be better for you since you have more excess weight to lose. I would absolutely ask the surgeon his thought on it. No restriction on RNY for me after my revision but luckily I dump and cannot over eat without getting violently ill so it keeps me in check.

  2. Your weight loss will be consistent. Follow your plan. The weight loss phase was the worst for me because it was slower then everyone else around me. I had to keep reminding myself it wasnt a race but my journey which would not be like everyone else. You will lose all the weight you want to lose if you stick to the plan and you will make it by your year kbrookings.

  3. I am almost a year revised next week and just got sick yesterday morning from eating Breakfast, for me it doesnt matter what I eat if I take a bite too much I get sick and it varies from day to day. I also get sick if I eat the wrong things and believe me if you are a dumper it is awful and painful, at least this has been my experience with RNY. Everyone is different and you may not even be a dumper or have to worry. Good luck

Does anyone here regret having had gastric bypass surgery? I’m still in the preop stage. I keep hearing about the downsides: adhesions, forever being careful of what to eat, dumping, stricture, malabsorption, etc. I’m getting scared to move forward. Part of me feels like I can lose weight with my doctors help (I’ve already lost 40 pounds, 80 to go). The other part of me says okay, you have surgery and lose the weight then what?? You’re stuck with the side effects? I’m getting scared and about to talk myself out of it. I’d like to hear your story and of you had similar thoughts are you still happy with the surgery?

Part of me says I should have been able to do this without surgery but lets face it I didnt. I also didnt lose 40lbs before surgery like yourself. I will say this I am on meds that I will never be able to get off of now and that does cause me anxiety and still knowing all of this I would do it again because being morbidly obese consumed my life and thats one monkey off my back ! Good luck

I’m on the 4th day of my 14 day pre-op diet and been trying to google/research everything I can about the gastric bypass. I came upon an article that essentially said that older and menopausal women are slow to lose and not as great results. I figured this was the place to find out the deal from my peers. I just turned 50, so this article definitely got my mind thinking. What are your experiences or thoughts? I would love to hear.c

I am 52 and went through the change a few years ago. It has not made a difference in my case. Good luck on your journey !

  6. So sorry for your loss. Be careful with alcohol. I was revised almost a year ago and I rarely drank but it has developed into something else. It is not the same as before. The bypass has changed the way alcohol effects me and its more or less instant relaxation/gratification? I really cant explain it but I can tell you its no good. I do realize that some bypassers will still have no issues but I am not one of those. I start therapy soon. I had to reach out before something terrible happens. Good luck to you

My GP believes all it takes is sheer willpower -as in “Just start eating healthy and exercising”. Looks like I’ll need to find a more supportive doctor. As for red meat, the woman giving her testimony at the info meeting said she had a lot of trouble digesting it and it seemed to stay in her stomach for a long time.
I’m so glad to read all the positive comments and honest answers. Thank-you.

Your GP doesnt have weight issues I suspect. It takes willpower either way. You can eat red meat or anything else as long as you can tolerate it. Good luck to you.

  8. Immediately !! I coughed that whole first night after surgery and kept my roommate up it was so bad. I ended up having a revision 11 months ago because of esophagitis D and a hiatal hernia. I was afraid of getting the bypass too but as far as weight loss and maintaining it has been much easier. I honestly liked the sleeve better because of the restriction and being able to eat all foods, but the flip side of that was I constantly had to watch my weight and struggled just to stay around 170. I was 180 the day of my revision and this morning I weighed in at 150.8. This is the lowest I have ever been and usually maintain 155 to 159 with no stress. I had a temporary crown put on 2 weeks ago and dropped 8 lbs because I am not getting the food I usually eat because of pain. I go in on Monday for the permanent crown and am sure my weight will bounce back up. lol Good luck to you and whatever surgery you choose.

I'm only 6 months post revision, so I'm not really sure if there is a honeymoon period like I heard about with the sleeve. I too have gotten below my goal and significantly lower than I ever got after VSG surgery. But I was overweight, not obese, at the time of my revision since the surgery was done for medical reasons, not for weight loss.

I really don't know why I've lost so much weight, since I feel like my insides have been healed for months. I try very hard to eat healthy and I walk 5-6 miles a day. But I would be less than honest if I said I never ate sweets, snack foods etc. I haven't been actively losing weight for the past month (only lost 1.2 lbs. in the last 30 days). I think I'm actually in maintenance, which would be great if I can just keep doing what I'm doing and maintain! If it's a honeymoon, I hope it keeps going.

I havent been losing much at this point nor do I want to. I lost 25lb more after the revision and have been maintaining it now for a good 6 to 8 months. I have noticed that if I dont eat a normal 3 times or more a day my weight will drop. I had a crown done a week ago and havent been able to eat on that side and dropped 7 lbs in a week!!! CRAZY

Hello. I’ve noticed I’m getting into a habit of grazing, especially if my stomach doesn’t cooperate during meal time. I’ll find myself taking a few bites of my food an hour later... a few more bites an hour later... and so on. So then I’m not really hungry at meal times. I feel like this isn’t how I should be eating, but I’m not really sure. What has everyone else experienced? I’m 4 weeks post op.

There is nothing wrong with finishing a meal through the day as long as you are not snacking outside of that meal. I truly believe that was part of the reason I made goal that first year. The sleeve is a lot more restrictive so you wont be able to finish the amount weighed out to eat, so I would go back when I was hungry and eat on that meal. I normally would finish Breakfast. It was lunch and dinner that I would not be able to finish. So I really wasnt going over calories doing it this way either. Good luck

  11. So I am coming up on my year revision from VSG to RNY and wondering about the honeymoon phase discussed in virgin surgeries. I am wanting to know if the honeymoon phase is different in a revision or the same and when it ends? I honestly didnt feel like I had a honeymoon phase with VSG I worked hard to get to goal that first year and I never felt like the weight just came off and it was hard to maintain, but with this revision everything seems so much easier and I am 20lbs lighter and not struggling to maintain like I did with VSG. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your reply! I was trying to find out what is the medical reason for this. Everyone has been giving me advice on food choice, which I understand and accept but I was wanting to find out what the reason was for there not being restriction to begin with. This is the first time in my research and in reading replies that I am feeling like this connects to what I am asking. I did not stretch out the pouch, it has never offered restriction to begin with either time. I thought there was error in the first operation. It clearly was not though because the exact same thing happened the second time and now I am just now trying to see what is going on on the inside of me that creates this mechanism to begin with.

There is a thread in the revision section called I hate the bypass and it talks more in length with a great number of people discussing not having restriction after bypass. You are not alone.

I'm on soft food stage and did salmon tonight for dinner with cooked carrot. I hadn't eaten all day & I just wasn't thinking and I ate too much, as I ate so quickly. I have Stomach pains, I've heaved, but only saliva comes out. It's so freaking painful! Will NEVER do this again. Terrible feeling

I feel your pain it is awful !!! Salmon did that to me last week but it was soooooo good until it wasnt !!! I cant vomit either so that does make it worse and it goes on for a few hours for me when it happens. I have that same awful pain if I eat the wrong things also.

  14. I didnt want to have revision either. I still miss the restriction of the sleeve and I still have GERD and am on the same PPI I was on with VSG. I will be a year out from revision in May. I will say though the reflux is better and it appears the revision helped in the fact I went from esophagitis D to A, no barrets and cancer for me !!!

I also lost more weight and have gotten to my lowest and its much easier so far to maintain then the sleeve. Good luck to you!!

  15. Looks like we have same stats and I totally get it. When my weight is 165-170 I dont have as many wrinkles on my arms and face. I staying right at 158 ish and can tell the difference in those 10 lbs when it comes to skin and wrinkles being worse. I wear size 8 to 10 depending on the brand and you are right those BMI calculators are not one size fits all. My bariactric team says that even though I may be a 25 BMI you have to figure in the extra skin considering I lost over 150 lbs.

  16. Unfortunately a lot of people are in the same boat after a revision. No restriction really stinks and is quite a shock when it is all said and done. We pretty much have a funnel where the food goes straight into the intestines, so the food just slides right on through is my understanding.

What are you eating and how often ? I find I get more of a fullness feeling when I eat solid Protein like steak or salmon. It really comes down to making the best choices you can in what you are eating and eating every 3 to 4 hours and make sure you dont drink until 30 min after a meal or you are just washing it out.
