  1. I wear a "big girl's" hospital gown and take my hoodie zip up robe and take a pair of "disposable" slipper (slippers that can be thrown in the hospital trash can after you're done). I also go commando.

    Don't know the answer to that. Some pre-diabetics, diabetics have Dawn Phenomenon--where the pancreas dumps it's insulin somewhere in the wee small hours of night (around 4am). The blood sugar slowly rises from then on out until you eat and break the fast. It's why Dr. B. wants his patients to eat within 30mins of waking and why Breakfast is the meal with the lowest carb allotment (6g rather than 12g). I do know that my BGs continually rise in a fasted state from waking until the afternoon when they fall down to the lowest levels of the day. Oddly enough, I'm eating more now and higher slow-acting carb/fiber than I have in so very long time. I'm eating 3meals + 3 snacks and eating at the same time each day. And I'm losing weight at 1500cals/day. Which is unheard of for me. And my A1c has dropped to 5.3 (from 6 or a 6.9). It's all such a perplexing but fascinating n=1 experiment for me. Cuz I do believe that the body needs time off from eating to effect cellular repair/scavenging/regeneration...

    It's been a long time since I read the research, but as I remember with Dr. Longo and his longevity experiments, I think the postulation was that caloric restriction (around 1400kcals/day) was enough to give a difference in telomere length? Again, don't trust my memory though. If that's the case, then our WLS diets are already defacto caloric limiters. And I've also read/studied about how the body prefers homeostatic systems and works hard with feedback loops to maintain those balances. The idea of ADF with caloric restriction or 16:8 went against that...and always made me question. But epigenetics is fairly new. So it's interesting to see if new knowledge develops. Dr. Richard Bernstein the diabetes doc maintains that the body has a 24hour memory for food. That's why to keep his patients with as small of a post-prandial spike in insulin as possible, he advocates eating the same macro quantities at each meal - day to day- and at the same time of each meal. So for instance, Breakfast would be 6g carbs, 3oz protein and fat to satisfy at 7am (no more than 30 mins of waking). Next day you would have the same meal comp at the same time and that repeats for each meal. Lunch and Dinner are both 12g carbs, 3oz protein and fat to satisfy. Then meals spaced 4-6hours between. This is all to keep the body functioning on as little outside insulin treatment as possible. The plan works. He's helped thousands!

    Gosh, you must be so frustrated and scared! ((hugs)) Saying prayers for you!! So Zantac is a "true antihistamine" that act as a histamine blocker and helps limit acid production in the stomach. With you being a bypass patient none of this might help as it would with a VSG. It was one of the early treatments for reflux and GERD. I have GERD, but also have bad post nasal drip, especially at night and I get thick slimy mucus in my esophagus and also in my bronchial tubes. So Zantac might help with that--it's a pure antihistamine. The Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that also works to reduce acid production. Here's the link: https://www.drugs.com/omeprazole.html They all have different mechanisms of action. I use all 3 of them, especially on days when I'm having a tough time. I always take the omeprazole and Zrytec. But if my GERD/asthma worsens and mucus gets going, then I add in Zantac. They've all helped me tremendously. But, I haven't had my RNY yet...It just seems like it's worth trying. And I would def. ask the doc if you could go ahead and start taking your PPI if you aren't already--maybe even taking it 2x a day for a short while (like 2-3 weeks). Anyway, just a thought...hang in there!

    Freaking out!

    Great idea! I'm printing this one too. It's basically the same as mine, but it progresses quicker. I am on 2 full weeks of liquids and possibly 3weeks before starting purees.

    Intermittent Fasting

    Dr. Fung is kinda "late" to the fasting show and based his work on that of previous doctors such as Dr. Walter Longo and Dr. Krista Varady. But before Dr. Varady came Dr. Johnson who wrote the original Alternate Day Diet book. I've actually spoken to him through emails when I was doing ADF with caloric restriction. We discussed the disruption of circadian rhythms that can occur especially in women as a result of fasting/caloric restrictions. I did ADF with caloric control/low carb while I was undergoing chemo/radiation/surgery. I had an over 60% reduction in tumor size (very atypical for my kind of cancer). The onc could not believe it. I also had fewer side effects than some of the women who went through treatment at the same time. Here is Dr. Varady's book. Here is Dr. Johnson's book. You might find them interesting to read. Dr. Longo's work is really very very compelling. Also, he's a long distance runner and vegetarian (or vegan) if I remember correctly? I have planned to do the 5:2 or maybe ADF after reaching maintenance as a way of controlling insulin and regain. I used to blog about, but haven't updated it in a long time. There are some good articles there. It's called Fast Days/Healing Days. I'd started doing JUDDD about 4 months before cancer dx and had started this blog. (Johnson's Up Day Down Day Diet), coincidentally, a few months later 5:2 hit the UK and went crazy. That's a good book too btw--as is Dr. Moseley's 800cal diet for diabetes (new book).

    @Bekke 777 I'm so sorry to hear you struggle! Just out of curiosity, have you noticed if the foamies get worse after eating certain things or taking certain meds? Have you considered taking an antihistamine at night or maybe even adding zantac? The reason I ask is that allergies and mucus are closely interrelated to gut issues. If I have GERD issues, then my asthma and mucus in my esophagus/throat (slimy) is 100times worse. I start taking zantac as well as up my omeprazole to 2times per day during that time... Oh and also, I sip on cups of warm water (like for tea) when that happens. After about cup 4, the mucus/slime factor goes down. hugs and congrats on a tough goal!

    My RD said I would have a cup of decaff on my tray with my first clear liquid meal. I drink mine black, no sugar, so that dog'll hunt! Choirs of angels sang at that news!!!

    ((hugs)) Def. take the valium! Also, take your tunes with you and crank them up load on your ear buds! Keep the lights low if you can. I always have a private pre-op room until they wheel me to surgery, so hopefully you will too. Maybe ask your doc for something to help you sleep the night before?

    Yeah the garlic is very high on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale and onions are right behind it, but the serving sizes are much smaller. We use garlic in everything lol. Broccoli sprouts/leaves are also obscenely high! Here is the ORAC scale. It starts on page 10. It's so weird but looking at this list, about 90% of the fruits veggies we eat have an ORAC number of about 35-36! LOL! *patting self on back* Also, yesterday you would be so proud of me. I had 1 1/2lbs of veggies lol (probably at least 80% from dark leafy sources)

    Have you guys tried the So Delicious sugar free vanilla coconut milk? I love it. I am still pretty careful cuz almonds used to make my throat feel funny after eating them. But oddly now, they don't--but I still haven't tried almond milk.

    Ok, cool info. I just for grins ran this through MFP: 1lb strawberries (USDA): 145cals; 3g protein; 1g fat; 35g carbs; 9g fiber; 22g sugars Not bad and totally doable to split it up so that you don't exceed 4g/sugar per serving. Do you know @Newme17 what they spoke about for other serving sizes for the other fruits and veggies?

    3 months post op & down 70lbs

    God bless you! I'm so sorry you are going through this rough patch. I hope they figure out the GB issue sooner rather than later. I SOOO get ICbladder issues! I don't have IC, I just have a bladder that was injured from chemotherapy and so it's tender all the time and I get bleeding infections like crazy. No fun! Hey, maybe the weight loss will help you IC and once you fully heal and get the GB taken care of, then you can really build your immune system back up?!! Have you ever tried making cranberry tea? When mine starts "twitching," I buy a bag of frozen fresh cranberries. Let them boil in about 1 1/2qts of water until they burst open, then turn off the fire, cover the pan and let them steep about an hour. Then you can strain it and drink it. I like it without sweetener, over ice. I figure it has about as many carbs per glass as water with a squeeze of citrus (I figure about 3-4g carbs per 12oz glass). You can use the cooked cranberries to make an unsweetened cranberry sauce or chutney. But drinking 1-2glasses of that per day (I also drink it hot like a tea), will often nip the inflammation before it starts! Congrats on the HUGE weight loss--although it has been tough losses for sure. Hope you figure out another protein source. Have you tried white fleshed fish like tilapia?

    Ok, this is my current flavor flave. I'm crushing on it daily in the afternoon (but I do decaff cuz I'm a wuss). I'm so tight that if you stick a lump of coal up my derriere, in 2 months, you'd have a diamond. So it's very hard for me to go to Starbucks even though I love them. Iced Coffee: 12 oz decaff coffee, brewed from fresh 2-4oz Premier Protein (vanilla, chocolate, caramel) sweeten to taste with zero cal sweetener (I use liquid vanilla stevia) 1-2 tsp benefiber ice, lots and lots of ice
