  1. At the top right-hand side of your screen, you will see your profile picture. Click on it and you will find a drop down menu with "My Surgery" listed. Once you click on that, click on "Progress" on the left side of your screen and update your weight.

  2. I had a total knee replacement two years ago and it was the worst pain. Physical therapy kicked my butt. Now my left knee is going and I shudder to think about going through that surgery again, but I can feel the bone hitting on bone when I pivot or trudge up the stairs. I'm doing everything I can to put it off. Cortisone shots directly into the knee hurt like hell. I can't take NSAIDS now that I've had the DS, so I've just walked with the pain. I guess we're all in the Bad Knee Club.

  3. I was the one who started the thread about body fluids. I'm not a big sweater...wait, that sounded weird. I'm not one who has ever sweat that much, and my perspiration hasn't changed since I had the DS 12 weeks ago. Even though I'm not a fan of the way my urine smells, I haven't noticed anything offensive about my underarms. In fact, no one in my family has noticed anything has changed about the way I smell. I wouldn't let the fear of going into ketosis or what you might have heard about perspiration dissuade you from getting the DS. I haven't found it to be true with me and I have a sensitive nose.

  4. I also had the DS on 6/9/17 and was revised from the band. The doctor did it in a few hours. I had three times the amount of pain when I had my band surgery because the port would pull when I bent over until it was healed and the doctor didn't give me any painkillers post-op. He handed my husband a few pills and sent me on my way. With the band, it was impossible to bend over for weeks. Let's put it this way, no one left the house until Mom's shoes were tied. I couldn't do it on my own. With the DS, I was able to bend over and pick things off the floor the first day home from the hospital and I only spent one night in the hospital. I was tired after the DS for the first two weeks, but by the third week, my life got back to normal. The pain was very minimal, at least for me. Now if you want to talk painful surgeries, a total knee replacement takes the prize in my book. I haven't had any experience with just the gastric sleeve part, only the full DS. Since the sleeve is part of the DS, I'm not sure why you've been told the DS would be an easier recovery. The DS is more complicated than the sleeve. Anyway, the recovery wasn't bad at all.

Is it possible it's due to ketosis? At least with that there could be a solution... (increasing carbs)..

I think this is what it is. It reminds me of how Water tastes when it comes out of old pipes. Icky. So when I'm in maintenance and increase my carbs it will go away? I'm hoping that this isn't permanent because I'm a DS patient and don't absorb nutrients like other people.

  6. Ha, ha! Well, I'm glad you did. Now I don't feel alone. I have to constantly throw out my bathroom garbage and replace the liner. I walk in the bathroom, and I can smell it. Why can't anyone else in my family smell it?? It's horrible. I feel like I smell like a grandpa. I guess I should say grandma, but grandpa comes to mind when I smell it.

  7. As you know, DS patients have been told that they will experience terrible smelling gas and bowel movements post-op. However, that's not what I want to address. What I've noticed is the overall odor of my body chemistry. Every single Fluid that leaves my body has the same distinct, dusty smell about it. I can't describe it. It's kind of like dirty sand. My urine and everything else that's fluid that leaves my body has this odor. I'm wondering if my saliva also has this smell. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm 11 weeks post-op and honestly I can't stand this smell. Will this go away after I'm in maintenance? I've asked my family (specifically my husband) if they've noticed it, and they said they haven't.

My nutritionist has me watching calories, carbs, Protein and Water intake. At 2.5 months out, I am aiming for about 800 calories, less than 50 g of carbs, and at least 80 g Protein, more if possible. I'm also supposed to keep to low fat foods. It can be difficult to do if I use shakes or Protein Bars too much, so I try to get the majority of my protein through tuna, chicken, and other meats.

I log everything that goes in my mouth on My Fitness Pal. I track my Water there too, I try to get at minimum 64 oz.

I'm curious as to why they have you watching your fat intake when a DS patient only abosrbs 20-30% of the fat they eat.

  9. I had the DS surgery in June and three weeks later, I was on the road on vacation with my husband. It was rough eating in restaurants and trying to find things I could eat and not cause a problem. I ate fish, eggs, and cheese frequently. It got really old and I wasted a lot of food because I couldn't eat very much, but i survived and stayed on my plan. When I got back home, I had lost a good amount of weight that week, which before my surgery would never have been possible on a vacation. So, it's doable if you look after yourself and are really selective on the kind of restaurant you select and what you order. I didn't need willpower. My stomach would yell at me when it was time to stop eating or I would get sick if I ate the wrong thing. It was a good teacher.

  10. I felt chilled the first day home from the hospital and snuggled in a blanket, but then that feeling went away the next day. If he continues to experience these flashes and seems unwell, I would call his doctor's office. They would know better if this is typical.

  11. I use My Fitness Pal and track my carbs and Protein intake. I don't pay attention to fat intake since I've had the DS. I keep my calories at 1000 a day because I need some kind of line in the sand, although my doctor has never told me to count calories. He just said to keep my meals 70 percent protein and 30 percent veggies and to stay away from sugar. That's all the advice I received. So far, my weight has dropped steadily every week since my surgery. I wasn't put on a pre-op diet. I work at getting my Water intake in all day long and still struggle with that.

  12. I really like strawberry flavored BariMelts Multivitamins. These melt really fast in your mouth and I don't mind them at all. Anything else I've tried made me gag. One brand I absolutely cannot stomach is ProCare Health Bariatric chewable multivitamins. In fact, if someone wants 29 tablets, you can have them for free, including shipping. I chewed one tablet and about turned inside out. These are citrus flavored and you're supposed to chew one daily.
