Unexplained Weight gain post revision
GreenTealael replied to starladustangel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
*Not a doctor, just personal experience plus asking doctors a lot of questions* Not everything is food related after surgery, especially if you are diligently tracking and seeing a dietitian. The temporary weight loss/gain could be: 1. Dehydration causing water retention (noticed reduced urination? May need electrolyte supplementation) 2. Disruption of normal lymphatic activities because of surgery (excess fluid still in circulation, puffy or swollen anywhere?) 3. Slight level of constipation (still have waste that has not vacated despite amount of trips to the bathroom) 4. Inflammation after surgery (edema of the abdomen because of the laparoscopic procedure-usually immediate and not super common) 4. Return to your maintenance weight after temporary drop (happened to me in the first 2 months- 2 weeks post revision I hit 10-12 lbs lower than my maintenance weight then went back to normal) 5. Hormonal response (menses/menopause - I ALWAYS gain before my cycle ) 6. Incorrect scale/discrepancy of scales used (I always weighed different amounts on doctor’s scales vs mine) 8. A combination of things Please let us know what the surgeon says! -
I like his videos. He’s not rude or condescending. I think if more teams told people to expect a little gain it wouldn’t be so devastating when it happens. I was not given that information until I joined the community and people made it sound like Armageddon instead of normal.

Some theories about regain from a surgeons perspective

Congratulations on making it to your goal! It’s not uncommon for people to be able to lose at 18+ months out. I cannot speak for every experience but it sure seems like most people do not stay at their lowest post WLS weight at 3+ yrs out (without working on it) I wouldn’t suggest forcing premature maintenance when you may eventually gain a little back anyway. Since you like your routine, have good habits, active , have indulged periodically, don’t want to focus heavily on tracking perhaps try just going with the flow and letting your body workout where it wants to be weight wise. You still have wiggle room especially since you in the healthy not underweight rage. If you start to effortlessly drop into that area without any signs of weigh loss slowing down then definitely consult your team.

Gaining a little or a lot? Most people don’t stay at their lowest weights. If you are gaining more than the anticipated amount try to figure out if it’s related to lifestyle (high stress), diet (food and drinks with too many calories despite the size) or medication

What do I need to do/buy to prepare?

I also used food scales and measuring cups. Another thing I loved was a water bottle with measurements so you can track your liquids too -

GreenTealael replied to *Paula*'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If I’m eating something with a higher carb content like bread I measure by calories and macros because how much I can physically eat is often different than how much I can eat to stay in maintenance or weightloss mode. -
Post op GERD help.
GreenTealael replied to AZDC72's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Usually the first step is medication (proton pump inhibitors and carafate if ulcer is suspected) followed by diagnostic endoscopy. I would suggest you insist on the endoscopy since you’ve been dealing with this so long (hopefully it’s done by your surgeon) because it can show nuances that can be missed through other imaging. Get well soon! -

For almost every major surgery (and some minor) most hospitals/clinics will only release you to an adult over 18. -
