That very much depends on what you cheat with. French fries or something sure, youll be limited. But a milk shake or something rich and decadent. Or even candy and you can still screw yourself a bit. I mean you wont be eating 4,000 calorie meals anytime soon, but 1000 + calories in a sitting is very possible if you pick the right wrong stuff. That said youd have to make some terrible decisions

The one that you enjoy the taste and flavor of. Unless youre lactose intolerant (in which case you want a lactose free one) the overwhelming majority of protein powders are roughly the same. Just take a look at the back and make sure it doesnt have a lot of added sugar and crap (most dont, occasionally they do). Theres some that I find disgusting and some that I love eating. Just find one you enjoy and stick with it. Of course it also depends how youre gonna mix it (with pudding, with water, with skim milk, almond milk etc). But I think the most important thing is finding one you can tolerate all the time. Premier Protein shakes from Sams Club are a popular option, and I do agree that they taste very good

Depends on the person Some people can eat a cheat meal and go back to doing the right things the right way. Thats fine. Some people can eat a cheat meal and be like an alcoholic having one drink, and spiral out of control into a path of addiction and destruction. Obviously only one of those people "can" have a cheat meal.

You could also just add protein powder to like everything as well (tea coffee soups) Or basically anything dairy based (yogurt, kefir, sugar free chocolate milk etc) Sure milk has some carbs in it, but early on youre eating so little anyway, its all about hitting that protein number Did your dr/nutritionist give some kind of directions ? I know mine gave a specific packet, although I found it useless because it was filled with crap id never eat or I didnt deem "healthy enough" for myself (ie purina)

Homemade protein pudding is what I lived on early on (sugar free jello pudding, skim milk, protein powder, I also added pb2 because I loved peanut butter) Though I ate that **** so much I'm so sick of it and can't imagine ever eating pudding again

From my experience I had a sleeve 6 months ago. I've lost almost all the weight I've wanted to, I feel great, look great. I can eat anything I want (I choose not to eat ****, but I'm certainly more than capable of eating a cookie if I so wanted) I've gone to bars and had mixed drinks, and shots. I'll concede I haven't tried anything carbonated (soda, beer, diet soda) but I'm almost positive I'd be fine as long as I didn't have a ton. Smoking is a big no no, but why would anyone do that anyways. This isn't a bypass, the commitment is certainly substantially less. Which means you'll have to show more willpower than wanting cookies to be truly successful. But I did have carbohydrate cravings early on, and there was a few nights I had (whole wheat) pasta without issue. The biggest thing is you'll have to learn to chew well and eat slower. As long as you do those things I'm sure you'll be able to tolerate the overwhelming majority of foods if not all of them.
  7. VSG is normally done before an abdominal hernia, as the hernia is easier safer and superiorly repaired after the weight loss

    Period during surgery?

OR nurse here, happens all the time. Most patients are younger females, so I'd say I get patients with this issue at least once a day, completely non issue. Most hospitals will let you keep your underwear and a pad on no problem
  9. I know constipation and all that is incredibly common post op. Early on post op (several months ago) I started taking Metamucil several times a day everyday. The last few weeks I've added two different fiber supplements to my mix in addition to this. So now I'm taking Metamucil (psyllium husk) fiber tablets (inulin) and fiber gummies (polydextrose). I'm getting between 40-60g of Fiber a day from supplements (this is probably around 200 calories a day of Fiber supplements) and another 25-30 from my diet (I'm well aware this is an absolute crap ton of Fiber). But I've actually felt far better and perfectly normal as far as my digestive issues since substantially increasing my fiber supplements. Has anyone else done anything like this?
  10. Metamucil 3x a day, colace 3x a day, maybe the occasional miralax. The fiber game is all about staying ahead, because once you fall behind its a pain in the ass
  11. Well fortunately I slowly increased the dosage over months so it's not even an issue! Now if I take a protein shake without the lactose pills, that's an issue
  12. I'm not talking the first couple of weeks post op but several months out (and further) But has anyone noticed a substantial difference between satiety and fullness when incorporating protein shakes into their diet? I recently began using several protein shakes a day for convience when working long hours, and find myself getting much much hungrier despite my protein intake substantially increasing on days where I consume protein shakes. Ive been looking at literature on solids VS liquids and satiety and there's not a ton of it focused on the subject especially in bariatric patients. And it's a shame because protein shakes will usually have much better macros than real food and are incredibly convient. Anyone know of any literature on the topic or have experienced options (and no I'm not talking about switching to a liquid diet, just getting maybe 30-40% of daily calories from shakes)

    Shakes and satiety

This always just seemed weird to me. Even when I Google and read up on slider foods they're described as typically being low protein high carbohydrate and void of nutrition, empty sources of calories, most of the time. Not to mention when we eat normal food we chew it up substantially breaking it down. However it does make sense, it's just weird and I don't understand it (protein shakes being a slider food, not sliders in general)

    VSG and GERD

Your insurance usually has separate requirements listed for reviisonal surgery. Generally speaking if you still qualify for surgery odds are good they would cover it. If you don't it's harder but more feasible. Out of curiosity when did the GERD start

    Genepro

I don't know your background with research and science. But if you read the label it has two ** next to that. And it says according to this study. If you pull up that study (which is the basis of their ridiculous claims) on genepros website. You'll first see the study was paid for by... Genepro! (shocker). And then if you read the actual study (which is posted on their website) you'll see that it's extremely poorly designed, and I do not believe comes even remotely close to supporting their claim. So if your surgeon said it's fine odds are he just blew you off not wanting to waste his time reading the label on a protein shake (and I can't blame them because what kind of surgeon is going to spend their times reading their patients labels and studys) But all you have to do is read it and say hmm does this look like a well designed study? Now I'm no researcher or statistician myself, but I am comfortable attempting to read a study and look for relationships and make inferences about probability. And this does not look like it proves their point. And I don't think anybody should be defending genepro unless they A) read the label, which clearly states what they're basing their claims on B ) read the study It's pretty clear to me that it's not worth it. This isn't to suggest Genepro is bad, because the odds are as a protein supplement itself it's likely the same as any other. The problem I see is that its very likely that it's not supplying remotely close to the amount of Protein that you think it is. If you're dead set on taking genepro you should probably be taking close to double doses to be getting close to as much is listed on the label.
  16. A simpler version of this without the alternative protein sources 2 tablespoons coconut flour 1 scoop protein powder 1 teaspoon baking powder And enough fat free milk of choice to make it a thick batter Microwave and serve Can add flavorings of choice (vanilla extract, torani etc} Will also increase your protein to around 30g + (depending on the milk and protein powder you use) and still be an excellent source of fiber from the coconut flour Also has the added benefit of not requiring a blender and being lower in carbs (if you wanted to make this even lower in calories you could reduce or even cut out the coconut flour, and use something like almond milk instead if regular fat free milk) (also you'd want tto eat it out of the cup with a spoon instead of plating it)

    Airport security issues ?

I had my surgery in November. Flew twice this month. I even went out of my way to ask the both the security guys if they noticed anything with the my stomach (I told them I probably have some metal/staples in there) they looked at me like i was crazy. I believe it's a non issue

    Question about hiatal hernia

I had a sleeve and a hiatal hernia repair and the pain was borderline non existent. I was in the hospital for a few days because of complications from anesthesia so I had the luxury of being on the good stuff for pain, but even after discharge it wasn't bad at all. I have no idea why people would think the hiatal hernia is brutally painful, it takes a surgeon 5 minutes and 1-2 sutures. Honestly gas pains (from having laparscopic surgery) is probably the most painful and uncomfortable part of the entire situation. You'll have discomfort from going to standing to sitting and vice versa but that's about it
  19. You drink syntrax matrix right? I've used that stuff so much for mugcakes but have never tried it in an actual shake. Is it any good with water? Skim milk?

    Postponing wls

Unless your job has some really incredible benefits, or you're extremely rich. I would try to work out a way to have them close to each other to reduce the amount of time you're off work and maximize your time available to recover. I'm not really sure why your shoulder surgeon would have to "clear you" for bariatric surgery. I've done bariatric surgery on patients days after having orthopedic surgery and vice versa. Hell I've done bariatric cases on patients with casts boots etc etc. Is it common no. But shoulder surgery will have no bearing on your ability to walk or drink fluids. True you won't be able to take anti inflammatories or steroids after, but many bariatric patients can't have those anyway Edit ID say it really depends how long you'd have to be out of work from the shoulder surgery. If that's only a few days I guess it's not a big deal. If that's longer, you might have to evaluate the benefit time/financial aspect
  21. Yes there's also worse things than delaying or canceling a surgery. Like getting hit by an Asteroid. The fact is if you have a documented record of your a1c on paper and anything bad happens it's a clear cut case of negligent behavior by the surgical team, and opens the door to liability and lawsuits by the hospital and surgical team as well as them eating the cost of any complications. Why they would proceed without during their due diligence is beyond me. And you've made it blatantly clear that you haven't cleaned up your diet at all so that your BMI still qualifies. You can eat lots of calories without eating garbage allowing your blood sugar to go all over the place. Complex carbohydrates, nuts fats less lean meats coconut/dairy cream are all high in calories allowing you to maintain your weight without spiking your blood sugar up and down. But it sounds like that's not the answer you want to hear. Why your surgical team hasn't addressed it is beyond me. It's possible they don't give a ****, it's possible they're unorganized, it's possible they didn't look at it because your PCP did the lab work, or it's possible that it's something they won't address until the last minute. You have two choices. Address the issue, or continue to try to convince people on the internet that it's not a big deal and roll the dice with whatever happens
  22. Have you ever had an endoscopy or been prescribed medication for GERD ? I know being prescribed medication is the other factor that insurance companies frequently look at (ie HTN only counts if you're prescribed blood pressure medication) It would look very fishy to me for a provider to diagnose a patient with GERD and not send them for further testing or prescribe medication.

    Pics of meals/portions PLEASE!

I typically eat about 200-300calories a meal 4-5 meals a day and have consistently eaten that amount from 8 weeks out through currently (just about 5 months) A typical meal for me is 2 whole eggs + a high fiber (60 calorie) pita or something equivalent to that. Basically all my meals are 100-200 calories of a lean protein and up to 100 calories of a fiber source.
  24. Does GERD count for you? With most people/insurances it does not count. Have you had an endoscopy? Have you been prescribed medication for GERD?
  25. They don't expect to cure your diabetes with the preop diet . They want you optimized for surgery to reduce complications and improve your outcome and recovery. Again nobody knows how your health care team will respond. We're just letting you know it's a legitimate concern that you'd be better off addressing sooner rather than later
