  1. Just a hypothetical. But if you reach your goal weight and there's nothing more you want/can lose and wanted to attempt to put on some muscle/LBM,which of course means eating more protein and calories. Would drinking with meals be a good way of accomplishing that?
  2. Im 4 weeks out as of today, and started softs about a week ago. I do find myself craving and looking forward to certain foods (notably beef and pistachio nuts) but Im also in the same boat as you where im not looking forward to or enjoying meals. I havent had any pain or complications from eating so far, but I also dont enjoy spending 25 minutes eating a meal, and taking ridiculously small bites with 1-2 minutes between bites. I dont have the patience for it, and such small bites of food makes it a bit less enjoyable. I can honestly say I prefer the protein shakes, its just easier and not stressful. I dont have to worry about pain getting stuck choking etc etc. I can just drink my shake and move on. I find myself eating real foods only when I need to address hunger pains. Otherwise im more than content with my shakes. I suspect in another month maybe 2 when I dont need to eat like an infant (and my options are expanded) I will find eating more enjoyable. Also I had a decent size hiatal hernia repair and dont have pain so i suspect its not that. It could be food intolerances or selection thats your problem. Especially if you are chewing and going slow appropriately.
  3. The DS is rarely performed. I think statistically it accounts for 0.5% of weight loss surgeries, meaning it might not be the most appropriate option. Getting a re-sleeve less than 2 years after an original sleeve is absolutely ridiculous and I have no idea why any insurance would cover it or surgeon would perform it. Having a sleeve to a bypass is a reasonable option. Especially if you think reflux is a factor. I just noticed this post is almost 2 months old though, so im gonna stop here.

    Breaking some rules

I also craved salt a ton immediately post op. I found cheap ole lipton soup a saving grace (obviously I didnt eat the noodles). Its pretty damn high in sodium, but my blood pressure has never been a problem and ive never been afraid of sodium. Not to mention its always been a childhood comfort food, so that definitely helped me feel better from a mental perspective

    1 Month POST-OP, did i develop GERD???

Statistically GERD improves in some people by the 6 month mark, and many people around the 2 year mark. This is because the stomach has had an opportunity to grow and recover decreasing LES pressure, maximal weight loss should have occured, as well as the restoration of the angle of HIS. All should help improve symptoms How much better and will it go away by the 2 year mark, well that depends on the person and a bit of luck.

Gas Pains 5 wks post op

The cause of your pain at 5 weeks being gas is incredibly improbable
  7. I don't believe this will make any difference at all whatsoever. Nor would anything in the post below. Honestly most of your options is putting on muscle after (which is extremely limited in its usefulness), surgical/laser based, and just staying healthy and hydrated. Most articles on treatment/prevention options expose them as gimmicks designed to steal your money.
  8. Oh totally but that second guys skin is extremely bad (and is relatively young) I think it looks like much more than 100 pounds of weight loss
  9. Are those from 75-100 pounds of weight loss? The first one maybe, thst second guy that's gotta be at least 200 pounds of weight loss if not more

    Am I eating too much?

This is kind of misguided. Yes your body can go into starvation mode and slow down its metabolism to preserve energy. Yes anytime you lose weight (whether it's fat or muscle) your metabolism will slow down. But the article also exaggerates the effects of LBM on metabolic rates. And you still can't gain weight while eating at a caloric deficit. It's simple physics, energy can't just magically appear. The reasons crash diets fail is because they aren't sustainable and people end up starving and gorging themselves, not because your body thinks it's in famine. Because by the same logic gorging yourself and eating like a pig would be a great way to lose weight because your body's metabolism would be in overdrive from excess calories.
  11. Does it only happen when you lay down? Gas usually goes away around a week, but it could also potentially be reflux
  12. They're gonna need to do a stomach transplant. (OK I'm kidding) But in all seriousness are you post op? And it's yogurt still so I don't see what the huge deal is. Unless there's like huge massive chunks of coconut and you're like day 1 postop. In which case you'd likely feel pain by now

    Overate ate at 7 days!

Oh I get that My first week and change I found myself dreaming about food and **** which I've definitely never done before

    Overate ate at 7 days!

Well everything is mental in this journey But the first week your appetite should be by far the smallest, and feeling like **** and probably being on pain meds food should be a struggle. A few weeks in your hunger is going to come back, and you'll be severely limited as to what you can eat. For example I'm still predominantly having the same diet as week 1, but I'm much more hungry and tired if it now

    So many emotions

I'd also remember it's temporary. Sure you won't be going out and eating like a slob anytime soon, but you'll be able to go out and eat again. Might be a little awkward barely eating anything but so what. Honestly when I was in my 20s the stuff my friends were eating from restaurants was awful **** anyway. Who can call Applebee's and the crap a typical young adult eats food anyway.

    Ready to drink protein

Labrada Lean Body RTD (cookies and cream is my favorite flavor). Lactose free and taste delicious. Though it technically doesn't meet my surgeons calorie/protein requirements, unless of course you divide it into two servings then it does (ie one bottle counts as two protein shakes for me) By far my favorite. My second favorite is OH YEAH! RTD also cookies and cream. Not quite as good, but probably a tiny bit lower in calories (also lactose free) Both have been staples for me these last 5 weeks. Good texture and flavor. The labrada is something I've used in diets in the past and I could see myself using long term. I usually purchase from like vitaminshoppe or bodybuilding.com

    Overate ate at 7 days!

Agree with this Honestly it's super unlikely that you caused any real damage (calorie, leak, or otherwise) by doing what you've done. But it's highly questionable behavior at the one week mark. And honestly the first week is the easiest, once you get to week 4 and 5 and are still predominantly on shakes you'll be going crazy (not to mention sustainability of these changes for the rest of your life which is an insurmountable challenge) I think the sooner you get ahead of this the better, use your resources.

    Chocolate After Sleeve?!

While I'm not really a chocolate person. It is Winter and snowing quite a bit. What's the viability of making hot chocolate with something like this? I've never made hot chocolate with anything but that cheap powder **** Can you make hot chocolate with chips, would it be decent? I tried making my own with cocoa powder and splenda, and it was extremely bitter and disgusting

    Overate ate at 7 days!

I don't eat cauliflower but isn't it A really gassy food anyway? I would imagine that in itself could be a quite painful

    First real foods

Yikes Glad for the heads up I just assumed that like 99% of problems were too much, too fast, or too big of bites (or adding liquids inappropriately) Got a feeling I'll be using protein shakes as a crutch much longer than anticipated
  21. Mhy12784

    First real foods

What would happen if I tried something too soon, but tried like an extremely small serving (ie two bites) I tolerated eggs very well but would love some soft ground beef. I know people say wait forever for beef, but what if I just tried two bites to see what happens? Would I end up in agony from a serving that small? I know I've read plenty of people having it at 2-4 weeks, but I've also read about it being one of those foods that takes some people like 6 months. Is one or two bites enough to ruin a whole evening?

    Is eating breakfast important?

While I think the study is vague and poorly designed, I think breakfast is still hugely important for WLS patients. I know theres a reason that many weight loss programs usually include something along the lines of avoid going more than 5 hours without eating/drinking. Considering that if youre sleeping and eating dinner at reasonable times, youre probably looking at a solid 10-12 hours of not eating from the time you had dinner to waking up. I think balancing your macros/nutrition adequately after WLS becomes substantially more difficult if you dont have breakfast. Even if its just a protein shake. Otherwise its going to get you into a cycle of starving and binging to catch up, which cant be good for the long term success of your WLS, and thats in addition to the previous mention of getting adequate and optimal nutrition. The argument for/against breakfast in non WLS patients is probably far more complicated, especially once you factor in all these gimmicky things like IF KETO and all that ****. But with WLS patients I think the benefits of having breakfast are clear cut

    Thanking Nurses

Also I would probably shy away from anything like edible arrangements. Something like that is great if you want to get a thank you for just your surgeon. But if youre getting something for a unit (which it sounds like thats your intention) youre far better off going to costco/sams club/bjs whatever wholesale retailer you use. And just getting some large trays of whatever looks good/is reasonably priced and then include a nice thank you card with it.. Cookies brownies maybe cupcakes are the safest bets. Basically **** that we cant eat anymore The reality is with nurses theyre more likely to complain/get annoyed about not getting anything/enough of whatever because it happens a lot (nurses are very territorial about their food). So volume is almost certainly more important than something looking pretty (as its just going to get mobbed as soon as they get it anyway)

    Thanking Nurses

I mean if theres one nurse in particular who stood out, writing a letter makes them look good and often gets them some kind of accommodation. Otherwise I would say just dropping off food (yes crap food is much higher in demand than healthy stuff) goes a long way as well. Keep in mind it is the holidays so theyre likely all getting bombarded with stuff everyday. If youre adamant on buying something, just pick whatever area was your "favorite" and get them it. You cant realistically buy something for everybody. Between the OR, PACU, the floor day + night shift, + the drs office thats too much. I just texted all my surgeons on the DOS how much I appreciated everything, of course I was really messed up on Dialudid at the time...

    Purée foods

Sleeved a week after you, started introducing scrambled eggs with no problems this morning. Made sure I cooked them on the softer side with smaller curds. Added a little ketchup for extra moisture. Im thinking about trying some soft ground beef next week if I dont have any issues. Havent really experimented much otherwise, the puree stage sounds kind of gross to me, and I have zero interest in blending meat/eggs. Will mention I did use salt and pepper and (because someone on thanksgiving made the pepper mill really loose and i havent cooked since then) ended up putting more pepper on than I ever would for eggs. This gave me a veryyyyy minor amount of discomfort in my throat. Ill try again tomorrow, but I dont think peppers an issue for me but I would keep spices in moderation
