1. I am getting married about 7 weeks post op surgery is July 19 and wedding is September 9 I am not a big drinker but my family is big on drinking and celebrating they like to party! I asked my doctor about having a drink or two at my wedding and he said I should be fine! This was definitely a worry for me!!

I have found a few I really like as far a wine but haven't tried any hard liquor yet...

  2. So nice to see someone local! I'm in Peoria...and yes, I'm scheduled for surgery 7/5, with the bypass...unfortunately had the band at one point and with complications had to have it removed 4 years ago. Dr Swain helped with the removal so went back to him for advice on next steps. There is so much information on this site I'm just trying to find all that I can. But so looking forward to having the surgery out of the way. I see you are 94 lbs down, that is incredible, congratulations!

Wow, we are very close to each other! 7/5 will be a HUGE day for you and is going to be the hardest but best day! The band was just a stepping stone in your past, leave it behind and look to the future!
I appreciate your encouragement and look forward to being able to encourage you as well. This morning was a scale victory for me of seeing 199.2 first the first time! I can't remember EVER being below 200!! You will get to this amazing achievement before you know it as well!!

  3. This post is getting me a bit nervous now; my plan calls for less than 500 calories/day for 1 year or until I reach 75% excess weight lost.

Follow your plan! My doctor said not to let what others are doing influence my goals or pace. I am 3.5 months post op and he still only has me between 450-600 calories. He wants me to focus more on my Protein intake than anything else and I've already lost 65% of my excess weight! Down 100lbs since I started this adventure in September 2016. (That is when I started my 6 month monthly weight loss visits)

  4. Lots of brides lose weight before the wedding. Although 100 lbs is amazing!
I'm sure you don't want to spend the wedding explaining yourself and talking about your diet. I'd tell them you'll tell them about your diet after the wedding and today you just want to Celebrate and have fun! Accept all the compliments and enjoy the day!

Thankfully I fly in 11 days before the wedding so any weightloss talk should be out of the way with the immediate family before hand. Just stressing the judge mental people that think negative of people and judge them for doing what makes them happy just because they disagree!!

  5. I'm glad you posted this question. I am 3 months post op and getting married in 23 days and haven't seen or told 90% of the family that will be at the wedding. I know I am going to get 1,000 questions because as of this morning I am -100lbs since I saw them all a year ago! I don't want the judgement from the family, especially my fiancés grandma!!

Idk what to say to them!!!!! It's honestly stressing me out and I fly out to the wedding location in 12 days!!!

  6. Hello, fellow Arizonan, Hope all is going well. I'm pre-op as well.

Hi Bonnie! Although we are using different doctors it is so nice to see another AZ patient! Do you have a surgery date? Bypass or sleeve? I am just a little over 3 months post op. I'm in the Glendale area, would love to connect with someone from around the same area!!

  7. I use an Apple watch and if you hold down the button on the watch it has a medical ID section (Same info on your phone) . Hopefully Apple has notified emergency/medical personnel and first responders how to access this information. Its really simple.

Thank you for this information as I do have everything in my medical Id area on my iPhone and also have an Apple Watch. I was unaware of this option! Maybe I can avoid spending the extra money [emoji846]

  8. And, to make things more complicated, we lose electrolytes too. Plain Water may not be enough. I like to drink some coconut water in there.. maybe 1 coconut water for every 3 regular ones. I eat salty Snacks, not drink salt. But that's just me, and I don't live in AZ.
Glad you are ok! And thanks for the warning!

Doctor suggested more electrolytes and told me to drink Powerade Zero but bc of the fake sugars it gives me a headache! I wish I liked coconut water

  9. Well yesterday was an adventure for me. I was at the local Water park celebrating a birthday for a friends daughter. We ate before we went and I made sure to drink lots and lots of water all morning and even took my 40oz keep cold bottle with me! I thought I was prepared for a day in the sun and AZ heat....man was I wrong!! Was waiting to go on my second slide, 75% of the way up the stairwell and started to get dizzy. Next thing I know I'm sitting on the stairwell surrounded by lifeguards, EMTs and have a soaking wet shirt on my shoulders. They took me back to the EMT office to check my vitals and my sugar and blood pressure were normal but my heart rate was jumping back and forth between 80 and 120 constantly. They determined that I was severely dehydrated. I drank 4 12oz glasses of water in 30 minutes and called my fiancé to come pick me up! We got me some food and more water but I didn't feel normal until waking up this morning and having some breakfast!!

I wanted to share my story as a lesson learned and point of advice for others...no matter how much you try to prepare our bodies can dehydrate so much faster now!!!

  10. I agree with you. That's my experience. I got to a point that alcohol wasn't affecting me. That was dangerous. I'm still learning to deal with that. Alcoholism among weight-loss patients is a very real danger. Good luck!

I have never been a big drinker nor will I ever be! I'm not concerned about alcoholism bc I do not have an addictive personality. I was never a food addict, my WLS was due to other medical issues. A drink every now and again will be fine just as before.

  11. Looking for some cheaper Protein options than the Ispoure I usually buy... any suggestions? I already know about premier and I like that one just looking for other options

I was using Isopure and am not. A huge fan of it...at my 3 month post op the doctor could tell I haven't been getting my protein like I should! Yesterday &I today I used the Sprouts (health food supermarket here in AZ) store brand of whey protein and made fruit & yogurt smoothies and am doing ok with it. I would just do research and make sure your looking at the grams of protein vs the calories!!

  12. Thank you all for your input and experiences [emoji4] I will for sure be good w/o, just was curious in case the terrible 2's get too intense.

Since everyone's body is different my surgeon suggested giving some red wine a try first at home. I had a 4 oz glass over a period of an hour last night with no reaction and I didn't feel drunk. He says wine is the better option!

  13. No judgement here I love my wine and vodka!! From my experience I started drinking around 6-8months. Just be careful cause you don't want to dump. I had a vodka cooler once before my 1 year was up and it was embarrassing cause was at a social event. Bent over with cramps and running to bathroom. See if wine okay for you but that first year dumping can happen and it's like wth caused that?!! I went on a girls trip 4 months post op and didn't drink - it was hell!! But it's only a few months. Also you'll feel the alcohol very quickly I always have to eat and drink or I'll be under the table. And if I remember correctly we're supposed to be holding off on drinking with meals for the first few months....as that can also lead to dumping. Good luck it does get easier with time and as your body heals!

I have been EXTREMELY lucky! I've dealt with "foamies" a few times and dumping one time which was brought on by chicken cooked in butter! My goal is to try a few sips of my favorite organic super fruit wine and then another night try a few sips of some crown royal (my go to before surgery) and then make a judgement call on how it makes me feel before the wedding. Wouldn't want to experience dumping on my big day!!

  14. Oh it was horrific. I just had another round of vomiting and it was not fun at all! I don't ever want to experience this again!

Sent from my SM-G920V using Melissa315, I am sorry you were attacked for asking a question about having some wine at your wedding. Unfortunately that is one of the hot buttons here.

Of course your doctor is your best source for an answer. Everyone tolerates wine and alcohol differently. I am almost 5 years out, and my stomach will not tolerate either. Even a sip burns so badly it feels like a knife sticking me.

Please don't give up on the group; it does have many answers. Please feel free to private message me for any questions. I'm not sure what surgery you had--I had the sleeve. No matter what WLS you had the problems and questions exist for all of us. Best wishes in your journey. Don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks, I actually talked to my doctor today at my 3 month post op appointment and was happy to be told I could give it a shot without a problem. He is supportive of wine as long as it is drank with caution. I am going to try a few different types out at home and see what happens and then make my decision!

  15. Let us know what he said.
Definitely try at home first (assuming he gives the green light). That would be tragic to get sick on your big day!

Woohoo!! Doctor gave me the go ahead. Definitely suggested trying it out at home first and then make the judgement call on what I can tolerate for the wedding day!! I will have to start experimenting to see what matches with my new tastebuds!! (He stated that it helps that my progress is phenomenal! 62% of my excess weight lost in just 3 months!)

  16. Don't try it for the first time at your wedding! You don't want to feel sick on your special day! I am having surgery on Wednesday and know a couple of people who occasionly drink now after surgery but way after. I wouldn't risk it. Just have fun, plenty of time to drink later on!

I figured it might be something I try in advance at home where if I get sick I will be ok. I'm just so unsure. Waiting to speak to my surgeon now at my 3 month post op so I will have to see what he says!

  17. Another thing that helps me is chewing gum! My surgeon said I can chew sugar free which helps with the desire to chew.

I chewed gum for the first time this weekend, 3 months post op, and I'm assuming it was the mint but it made me burp a lot! Although it was a great option while out to dinner with some family at a place where I can not eat! (They didn't even offer a side salad option, we were unaware when we agreed to go!)

  18. I have been wondering about alcohol as well! I am getting married in 4.5 weeks and want to have some wine with the toasts or even a few sips of my favorite apple crown with the wedding party on the way to the reception! At that point I will be a little over 4 months post op. I have my 3 month post op appointment today but I know if I mention it to my surgeon he will tell me no as he is against drinking after bypass! I just want to Celebrate a little nothing crazy!!

  19. Not everyone is required to go on the preop diet. She may not have a fatty liver due to her age? Idk. Wishing her the best!

I only had to do a 7 day liquid diet whereas my friend had to do a 14 day liquid diet. I also had a friend that only had to do 2 days on liquids only. All doctors have different requirements based on the individual patient. If your concerned for your daughter have her contact her doctor and ask if she needs to make any diet adjustments prior to surgery.

  20. Thanks for all the replies! My unsweetened tea is not decaf.....I'm like in mourning over it....lol
Has everyone given up caffeine? And is that for life?

I gave up caffeine 3 weeks pre op to help with not having it post op. It was hard at first but now I don't miss it. I tried to make a coffee Protein smoothie and hated it!!

My doctor said after 3 months I could have black coffee again but I'm just going to stay away for good!!

  21. I'm 8 months out and have averaged a weight loss of 16 pounds per month. I eat somewhere between 1200 - 1500 daily.
At 3 months I was told to be beteen 800 - 1000 calories. The way you get it in is to eat 5 small meals a day - every 3 hours or so. That's the plan I was given by my NUT and it seems to be working very well for me. Don't forget to eat some good fats - nuts, olive oil, nut butters. I'm allowed 3 servings daily. They are good for you and help get that calorie count up.

Every 3 hours sounds easier then it is turning out to be ☹️ Everyone suggests the good fats, I use Olive Oil when cooking but don't eat nuts nor nut butters. I am not a fan of anything but Peanut Butter and I haven't allowed myself to have it yet. (I have a tendency of over eating it). I get enough Protein bc that is mostly all I eat.
