  1. I think the gas pains are all gone now. Really, i think it might not have been gas that was causing pain, but rather my diaphram from being blown up.

I feel pretty good right now, had an oxy about an hour ago, and have started drinking my Protein 2.0 Water. I can tolerate little sips, but nothing more. May wait till tomorrow to try yogurt or pudding.

All in all, the Hernia pain seems more than the sleeve pain. Standing up or sitting down takes a lot as it is very painful. But, i'm doing it. Taking small walks downstairs or just down the hallway.

Excited to see the weight shedding. I gained 10lbs in the hospital, and have already lost 3lbs from peein. The stomach needles for the blood thinner isn't as bad as I thought they would be. :) Thanks to everyone for their support on this site.

  2. Had my gastric sleeve yesterday, Friday the 29th. They did the gastric sleeve and fixed an umbillical hernia. They did the sleeve with the davinci, and the hernia he had to make an inscision because the hole in my abdomal wall was too big.

Drinking liquids is so strange, because you feel it drop to the bottom. When i came out of surgery the gas pain in my chest was horrible. Now, a day later the hernia pain feels worse than the sleeve, except when I drink sips, then the stomach feels raw.

6 inscision sites for the davinci for the sleeve, and 1 cut for the hernia. My whole body is swollen from the fluids they gave me, so I gained 10lbs while in the hospital yesterday and today. They say that will shed off quick.

So this thing is underway. 2 weeks of liquids is gonna be rough. I hope this stomach heals quickly.

I guess this just goes to show that everyone's program is different - and sometimes REALLY different :)

Day 6 of the 2-week liquid diet is mostly done, and yet I'm not in ketosis. How on earth does that work? (They checked urine this morning.) I've averaging 650 calories per day, less than 35 g. of carbs per day (usually way less) and yet no ketosis, which makes me worry a little about my liver not shrinking. Down 8+ pounds.

My hospital apparently has a complex program to address narcotic abuse, so the medicine regimen in the days leading up to surgery is crazy - celebrex, gapapentin, anti-nausea meds, Colace, Tylenol, some sugary drink to prevent your glucose from tanking, all timed out. I walked out with 17 pages of instructions, lol, and that doesn't include the binder full of info for this Friday's class.

Also met the surgeon for about 5 minutes. It was a good day, but for some reason I'm not excited about this. Not sure if it's because I'm being realistic or if something else is off. Maybe overcompensating so I don't have a freak-out? Not sure. I'd be interested to know how others are feeling as they get closer to surgery.

Wait, they gave you "PRE" surgery meds??? Only meds i got were for AFTER surgery, to include 3 weeks of NEEDLES that I have to give myself two of every day to make sure i don't get blood clots.

I have met my surgeon a bunch of times, and the funny part is at first he couldn't use the divinci, then he told me "yeah, i'll be certified by then, so I can use it", then he says "don't worry, doctor so and so will be there to assist and give me tips and tricks"! So I understand your nerves as well. :)

haha yeah I was waking up in the middle of the night craving chinese food ... and who's ever heard of eating just one piece of pizza!!

Good luck on Friday!! I'm on day 6 post op ... good news is that your appetite and cravings simply disappear (or at least mine have). Less good is I'm getting pretty tired of Protein Shakes already. Am gathering recipes for other full Liquid Protein rich Soups and broths.

Hey, the cardiologist receptionist gave me the idea of Protein 2.0, because she said she was getting sick of the Protein Shakes. I ordered some and have it on hand for when i get home.

How much pain were you in the day of and after the surgery?

Not ashamed to admit it, but I'm scared to death. Tried making doc understand he should give me some meds that i could take the night before so I don't back out, but he wouldn't listen.

My big issue is I am the fussiest fat guy you will ever meet. There are very few things on the different diet stages I will eat, so I hope i get to regular food quick!

Oh no! I hope that was an isolated incident for you and all is smooth sailing from here. pizza isn’t going anywhere. One small slice may not harm you, but I say skip it and concentrate on how awesome you’re gonna feel soon! Best wishes for Friday. 🙂

That is one of my biggest pet peeves, people saying "you are gonna so feel so much better"... I don't feel bad now!!!! It's driving me nuts, from the doctors, nurses, family members, it's really beginning to tick me off. Am I the only one that feels this way?

For a little background, i was 417, no diabetes, no high cholesterol, no joint pain (except knee from previous patellar rupture falling down stairs), no health concerns at all, except for sleep apnea. If it wasn't for the umbillical hernia, I probably wouldn't even be getting the sleeve, but I figure what the heck, they are in there, might as well get the two-fer! :)

do you have any diet restrictions before surgery? I also have to take 7 pks of Miralax with Water two days before surgery and again the day before.

Mine is just a preop diet, 2 to 3 shakes per day, unlimited non starchy vegies, and one meal to include 3-4 ouncews grilled, baked, or broiled meat or other whole food Protein. BUT, the unlimited vegies put me in the hospital last week, because i ate a lb of baby carrots throughout the day, and they caused a blockage in my bowel! So unlimited, really isn't unlimited. :)

  7. Just had mine on Thursday (1/14). I have to be honest, the pain was not as bad as I thought it would be (not painless, mind you, just not OMG I’m going to die pain). My gall bladder removal hurt way worse than this. I had lost close to 70 pounds on my own prior to surgery so I don’t know if that helped with the recovery (I was doing a minimum 3 mile a day exercise walk). My advise is get up and start walking as soon as you can after surgery. I was up and walking by maybe 4 pm (got to my room maybe around 11 am). I also really believe the surgical binder has been a big help.
    What is a surgical binder?

  8. So this coming Friday is approaching, and started the 2 week preop diet last week to shrink my liver, AND ENDED UP IN THE HOSPITAL!!! Apparently when they say as much non-starchy vegies as you want, they dont mean a whole bowl of uncooked baby carrots as they partially obstructed my bowell. BIG TIME PAIN for two days. Not a good start to this for sure. Good thing was i got a good look at the hospital. :-)

Has this happenned to anyone else?

Also, would it kill me to have one piece of pizza this week? ;-)

My Doc used the Davinci. No issues here. Let him worry about the surgery, and you take care of everything they tell you to do. It will be fine. And this is coming from a Bills fan. You guys are going to be a real pain in the ass next year. Lol. Good luck brother!

How many scars do you have? How much pain were you in afterward and for how long?

  10. Interesting. My surgery is the 29th of January, and I have been telling everyone. I've had a umbilical hernia for a long time, and i'm telling everyone I'm getting it fixed, and figured i might as well do the two-fer and get the sleeve as well. I wasn't going to tell my parents (just cuz i figured they would go on and on about it, i was right), but slipped up and mentioned a two week diet before the hernia surgery, and it gave it away. So now everyone knows. I'm thinking it will be better for everyone to know, rather than to think i'm sick.

I am 5 weeks post op and have lost 15 lbs. Is this on the lower end of losing? I don’t get much exercise in and am trying to work on that, but I feel a bit like I’m failing myself. Input is appreciated!

Isn't slower better, to keep from getting loose skin?

I have been overweight for 35 years. I steadily put on 2-3 pounds a year for 35 years. I have been on every kind of diet you can imagine. I had lapband surgery about 15 years ago and that ended up being a failure as I could not swallow at night. I gained all my weight back and then some within no time, I am having the lapband removed and gastric sleeve on 12/16/20. I am excited about the future and ready to start this journey! I need some support pals that are going thru the same life change. Lets Roll!

I am having the sleeve on 1/29, and I'm more nervous than excited. :)

  13. This is starting to get too real. Scheduled the surgery today for Jan 29th. Was told today he will be using the davinci robot!!!*(&($&%R% Little nervous to say the least. I'm having an umbilical hernia repaired and he is gonna do the sleeve while he is in there. Granted, if I didn't have the hernia, I probably wouldn't even entertain this sleeve idea, but I figure might as well take advantage of the two-fer.

Has anyone else had the davinci robot for their sleeve, and had an umbilical hernia repaired at the same time?
