How long until you level out?

I lost most of my weight in the first 10 months also. Now I am focusing less on protein, more on fat and keeping carbs low...Still researching but may be heading towards low carb mediteranean diet. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Keto diet

I was stalling for about 6 weeks and started Keto 2 weeks ago. It helped me with satiety and I broke the stall and lost 3 lbs. I feel very satisfied eating keto. But I am still reading and weighing the types of fats I want to include. Keto emphasises a lot of saturated fats. And new evidence has come to light that saturated fat is not as bad as we were led to believe, although many reputable sources encourage a higher percentage of poly and mono unsaturated fats. Still researching, but I think there is definitely something good about adding fat to our diet. I look forward to hearing others' thoughts and experiences. Oh No I'm Really Hungry

Don't know if this will help, but I started adding more fat to my diet and that has really helped with satiety. I am a year out, so that is a consideration also. I am reading about which fats I want to include as there is a lot of old and new information out there. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Worst Experience so far?

I am sorry you had so much pain. 4 days is a long time to be in pain and miserable. I do remember them telling me to breathe after I got out of surgery. I had never felt so relaxed in my life and I was thinking...no, I'm good. Then the pain hit and I started yelling the F- word. The pain was stopped immediately and for the remaining 2 days of my stay. But I usually respond well to pain medication.

    Good eating Habits

I used to make lists for my nutritionist and email them before our meetings so I didn't forget anything. That helped me to get the most out of my visits. Your nut can be a great source of information. I went every month or two for the first year. Protein is very important of course and definitely learn and stick to the rules they give you. Start reading labels and reading nutrition information from reputable websites. There is a lot to learn and fine tuning your diet is going to take some time. Low carb high protein is just one step in the right direction. In the beginning weight loss is much easier. Once you can eat more the weight loss slows, you have to look at your diet in more detail. You are eventually going to want foods you ate before. Know that there are many low carb alternatives out there. I made low carb bagels this morning that weren't half bad. I am now transitioning to a Keto diet which is high in fat, moderate in protein and low carb. I don't suggest this for a while. But at one year out, I find the higher fat (healthy fats) help me with the cravings while still facilitating weigh loss. I agree with the previous posts, and would strongly recommend you stop sugar and processed carbohydrates. I have found so many improvements since removing them from my diet in addition to weight loss. I have found that most people on this site understand the struggle, are very helpful and full of great information. Wishing you the best and looking forward to your 1 year post op post sharing your success :-)

    Worst Experience so far?

Constipation the first few months sucked. But, it really was a minor issue compared to all the positive changes since surgery. So glad I did it!

    Vsg & keto?

Just started Keto 2 weeks ago and I really like it so far. I am still learning. It has helped me with hunger for sure. Although years of the "low fat" mentality make me feel like eating so much fat is not good health wise, so I am working on getting past that inaccuracy. I am a little surprised that I haven't gained and went down two pounds the first week after stalling for a few weeks. Doing smoothies, chicken and veggies soup, veggies and grass fed beef or chicken. Also doing almond crust Pizza. I am going to make a keto casserole this weekend. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Keytogenic Diet

Anybody try the keytogenic diet? I am thinking about giving it a go. It's not a stretch from what we are doing. Would love to get feedback from anyone who has tried it.

Wow! That is fantastic. What were your biggest challenges on the diet?

    Halo Top Ice Cream

Just tried it today and chocolate is quite delicious I look forward to trying other flavors. But yes, we still have to watch our portions, but I think it is a doable option. I was doing frozen bananas in the food processor, but pretty sure this has a lot less carbs. Less natural, but less carbs.

    A Pound of Cure

I am just over 11 months out. I'm reading the book A Pound of Cure, and I really like where it is going. I would love to hear anyone else's experience with this way of eating? I will post my experience as well as I move through the process.

    A Pound of Cure

Agreed. It's a little scary to deviate from what we have been taught and from what has worked for us. My weight loss is slowing down, as expected and I've always felt that more veggies can't be a bad thing. So just trying to find my permanent and healthiest groove.

    A Pound of Cure

So Funny. I just downloaded it today as well. It looks good, but having trouble finding many personal experiences. I wonder if that is because it is so strict? Enjoy the read and your holiday and let me know what you think.

    Physiological Changes After WLS

When people say it is just calories in calories out I think....not so much. There is so much more involved. In my experience, the changes in addition to weight loss are difficult for people who have not experienced these changes to understand. I have all but given up on trying to throw some actual statical facts out there to people who haven't had wls, because they just cannot comprehend it.
  17. I am 11 months out and 90 lbs down. I'm looking for more ideas on eating plans that you have had success with. Always a work in progress. What type of eating plan have you tried that you would recommend? Whole30? A Pound of Cure? Mediterranean Diet? Clean Eating? And how long have you been doing it? etc.

You know you lost weight when

When you rest your face on your hand and it is uncomfortable because you can feel the bones in your face now as well as your arms and shoulders. Odd feeling, but a good thing.

    Physiological Changes After WLS

Agreed. Found that interesting as well. And this is not the only place where I read that most people will loose no matter what they di in the beginning.

Not Tracking your food is a big mistake!

Same here. I still eat out a lot. And it's not uncommon for the meal to not be something I can easily look up. I prefer enjoying my company rather than focusing on finding the nutrition info, which is likely off anyway since foods are prepared differently in different restaurants. So I employ other techniques. Slow eating, conversation, just the protein, nothing fried, etc. Many times I will share a dish with Hubby and eat the protein then a little veggies. And at home, I don't measure ingredients much of the time. But I do focus on high quality protein and low carb veggies. Seafood and chicken, eggs, broccolli, onions, peppers, kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, butternut squash, nuts, etc. I don't eat processed sugar at all. And I don't do chips or ice cream and I haven't done pop in over 30 years. I enjoy cooking and eating and what I eat. It works for me. My problems before were processed sugar and carbs. Those are pretty much out of the equation for me now.

Not Tracking your food is a big mistake!

Congratulations on your success Kate! Approaching your 2 year mark and under your weight loss goal. Very cool! Agreed that tracking for me on a daily basis boarders on obsessive. It's good to do a check in here and there though.

    Ketosis

My nut said not to worry about staying in ketosis when I asked her. I lost about 11 lbs in a short time and thought that was why, and maybe it was, but completely agree with DairyMary about your diet needing to be sustainable. Focus on a healthy nutritious diet and follow the rules.
  23. Many of us could not loose the weight before surgery. I know I could loose a little bit if I disregarded the rest of my life and spent all of my time obsessing over every ounce of food and working out for 1.5 hours most nights. But that isn't a reality that is sustainable for me or for most people. And the weight never stayed off. I am learning how to have a good relationship with food and a good food/life balance. Surgery is just one piece of the puzzle. But it is a really powerful piece. The other pieces are nutrition counseling and support both here and at groups sessions and thought and planning when doing meal preparation. Now that I'm approaching 1 year, I find I have to be a bit more diligent than before since the portions and snacking can creep up on you quickly. It is still work. You have to work at it. But give yourself all the tools you possibly can to succeed. You deserve to have a healthy life. It is scary. But the potential benefits are so great, that you would be doing yourself an injustice if you didn't educate yourself fully to make the best possible decision for you. One last thing. You may already know this, but wls induces many physiological changes in your body. From changing the way 5,500 genes react, gut microbes, white blood cells (which also affect metabolism) and neuron changes as well. Found this article last week. 2/3 of the way down there is a section on the "Set Point". I found this to be very interesting. I knew some of it, but not all of it. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/health/bariatric-surgery.html?_r=0
  24. You're not crazy. And just to throw this out there, I also lost about 30 something lbs on my last ditch effort to do this without surgery. Then I too gained it all back plus 10 lbs. So, hope you don't, but if you're like many of us, you may gain that weight back and qualify for surgery whether you try or not. Truly not trying to be pessimistic, but it is a hard battle we fight. I agree with what James said about diabetes being helped by bypass. I have read that many times and that it depends on how long you had it before surgery and how bad it was. I did the sleeve and did not have diabetes (yet). But give the surgery some serious consideration. My advice would be to do your research. I was nothing short of obsessive for at least 6 months before surgery. Read 3 books, plus recipe books, spent a LOT of time reading on this site, looked up every statistic I could find from reputable sites. Found a great program with really great people (support group, nutritionist and a very qualified surgeon). Went to the support group and informational meetings before surgery. I needed to feel comfortable about my decision and I did. And I am so grateful that I was able to have the surgery. The very best to you in your journey.

    Feeling kind of betrayed

Trash the chocolates in front of him and ask him if he understands now. Not kidding. It is important that he get the message if he is going to be in your life. You're either on the train or not. If he was allergic to peanuts, would you buy him a large box of peanuts?
