SusitaNM got a reaction from FluffyChix in Any other female amputees?
I am a 55-year-old woman who lost my left leg -- and much of my mobility -- due to trauma. In the years since, I've struggled terribly with my weight. I've always had weight problems, but balanced them out with healthy exercise, healthy food, and proper medical diagnosis of several metabolic disorders, including Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, hypoandrogenism, and poly cystic ovarian syndrome.
Several years later.... I'm in full-blown menopause and I've gained close to forty pounds since my amputation. Because of that, I basically spend all my time in a wheelchair. I CANNOT GET THE WEIGHT OFF. So I decided to do a gastric sleeve. My surgeon advised me that the surgery will help me shed enough weight to regain my mobility and may even reset my metabolism to make it easier to keep the weight off in the future.
I am reaching out to any other amputee gastric sleeve patients who might be out there. My surgery is about a month away, and I would really benefit from some realistic advice about walking after surgery, mobility, etc. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks,
SusitaNM

SusitaNM got a reaction from Apple203 in Have to make a decision about RNY right NOW, panicking!
Hi Wesja - In the end, it's your call. You know yourself better than anyone else and only you can weigh risks vs. benefits. However, as someone with the EXACT medical conditions -- Hashimoto's and PCOS -- I need to tell you that having gastric sleeve surgery has been nothing short of miraculous for me. It has completely reset my metabolism and allowed me to do the impossible -- lose weight. A lot of it. Six months in and I've lost 64 pounds. Something that was impossible for me before surgery. And, I've had zero complications and zero side effects.
I'm a lot older than you, and I wish this option was available to me many years ago. The older I got, the more these metabolic conditions kept me from longterm weight loss success. When I added a physical disability and menopause into the mix -- gah! I was roadkill. Oh and by the way -- my endocrinologist and primary care doc both said I didn't need the surgery. That I wasn't "fat enough." Now, they're both thrilled with my weight loss and improvement to my overall health.
I wish you the best of luck. If you have questions for me, shoot me a message. Take care!

I'm May 30 too! Feeling nervous. Spoke to anaesthetist today and also had my pre-admission appointment with the hospital. Over the pre-op diet too! Good luck on Tuesday

I had my anesthesia pre-op consult yesterday and all is set for my Tuesday May 30 surgery. I'm more excited than nervous. But...as I start Day 10 of my 14-Day liver-shrink diet, I have to admit this Liquid Protein thing is getting reeeeely old. The good news is I'm not hungry. I'm not experiencing cravings for other foods. I even lost a few pounds in a week of drinking this vile stuff! So I'll keep my focus on the positive.
Any other May 30 sleevers out there? Anyone else in their last few days of pre-op? How are you doing?

SusitaNM reacted to MBird in Last Post As A Pre-Op
I finally received the call for surgery, tomorrow I arrive at the hospital 5:30am. I'm excited, and nervous.
It's been emotional for me. I had nearly no support from anyone, this was all me. My partner had enough on his own plate that he couldn't be concerned. My friends had left my side when I discovered my father had cancer. There was drama related stress as well. Anyone who has loved ones who have cancer, or has personally been afflicted with cancer knows what I'm talking about. Sometimes you learn who your friends are when put to the test. My mother, who I'm close to, has forgotten the surgery and I can't blame her -
Plus my period started, lol.
Good times!
I've had good cries in private, but I also suck it up.
I'm optimistic about starting this next chapter in my life. It's bitter sweet. I've been looking back at how I got this big to begin with, and I find myself riding emotional highs and lows when confronted with the situations, people, and personal actions that got me this way. And I know just when I realized I wouldn't be able to lose it anymore the old fashioned way. I knew when and how I had screwed up my metabolism, and will power.
This process took over a year, and that's long time.
I've decided to pack very light. Throat spray, one pair of pajamas, undies, pads, slippers (slides) and the clothes on my back. My C-pap. Nothing more. No need. Gas X doesn't help with the kind of gas they pump into you, walking will. I didn't want to make a huge production of it.
I'm also proud of myself for hitting my twenty pound weight loss goal today. Everything connected to this moment kind of moved at a snail's pace, but also fell into place.
I feel so fortunate and blessed to have this opportunity for a surgery that many would like to have but cannot afford. It's a privilege for me to have this surgery. The pre-op showed me what I'm capable of. 20 pounds in 23 days is, AMAZING.
See those of you sleeved the same day as me or close to, on the other side of this, and the rest of you too. I hate saying see you on the "losers bench" - it sounds so wrong somehow. I get what it means but... still.
Besides, I'm not a loser, but a winner. So are the people who undergo weight loss surgery ~

This is my first post on this forum
As long as all goes well in Insurance Land I will be getting sleeved in 12 days (eeeeeeek!) May 17th is THE DAY!
I came home on Monday after eating and drinking my way around France and Italy for 2 weeks (best food funeral ever, btw). Even better, I was only up 2.5 lbs from when I left, which was the day after my last visit for my 3 month supervised diet. I wanted to be sure I was under my last recorded weight when I went back to see the surgeon yesterday for my final pre-op visit, so I started my office's pre-op diet just to drop a few pounds. Well, that worked out in my favor b/c they were able to schedule me 13 days out instead of 19 (they only do WLS on Tue & Wed).
So, I'm powering through the pre-op diet . My office does 2 - 3 approved Protein Shakes a day (I use Premier) and 1 high Protein, low carb meal a day, with the option to snack on raw veggies whenever. I'm feeling pretty good so far. This weekend I'm planning on preparing for post-surgery meals for my family. I'm a big meal prepper so I'm going to make sure the hubs and 3 kids are set for food so I don't have to cook when I can't eat anything.
Looking forward to sharing my journey with everyone! I love reading about your journeys.

I was sleeved yesterday! I woke up with a lot of discomfort and pain, but I feel so much better today.
I was scared in the days leading up. Today, I feel hopeful, relieved, and excited.

While not an amputee, I do have many disabilities that make finding an exercise routine challenging.
As exercise is crucial for losing/maintaining I got a script for PT, so they could teach me a routing that I could do at home. Maybe something to look into.
