  1. I have been going to the gym a couple of times a week. I'm 5 weeks post RNY. My surgeon gave the green light after 2 weeks (no weights or core exercises) so I've been doing elliptical, huge stair stepper thing, and walking or jogging. I just watched Dr V.'s video on Why You Should Not go to a gym after WLS. He is taking about the period after surgery for about 6 months. it actually makes sense and he says surgeons and their teams who tell us to go to the gym and workout are wrong. Dr. V. says it leads to hunger & weight loss stalls, among other things, since we cannot consume enough calories. So- are you exercising? What are you doing and when did you start? not sure if I should save money and forego the gym for a while and just go walking around my neighborhood. Thoughts??

    Non refrigerated snacks

I agree with almonds. Pistachios are amazing! I relied on Atkins protein bars when I went to a conference. Could you bring a lunch bag with a frozen thing to keep eggs or yogurt cold?

    Protein bars?

GNC has a huge selection of quest bars. Flavors I wasn't aware of. I've also been using the Atkins protein bars which are like a candy bar. They aren't as dense and heavy as Quest bars so I like that. With quest, they are tasty, but if I eat more than half, it feels like a rock in my tummy. I do like both of those, though.
  4. I have this same problem. I went to lunch with friends this weekend during a conference. I had just gotten a Starbucks (skinny, skim milk, so yes it has calories but also protein). Anyways, while they are I just had my drink. They were asking me if I wanted their sushi and I just said, no, I'll just have my Starbucks. I tell people I eat 6 smaller meals per day, including nuts and protein bars/shakes and that I'm following a pretty strict food plan. I prefer to eat at home where I have total control. It's strange that the social piece changes after this surgery. I'm sure we will figure it out.
  5. My surgery (RNY) was end of June so I hadn't had Starbucks since then. Previous to that I'd go get Venti sugary drinks 2-3 times per week Bc I hated my job at the time. I had a tall skinny mocha with almond milk (decaf). Wow. So yummy! I'm not sure if exact nutrition, but skinny mocha has 5 cal per pump and the almond milk ( which does have some sugar) so I estimate it has about 95 cal, 4 g fat, and 5 g sugar. I put in unflavored protein powder for 92 cal and 20 G protein. I don't cheat anywhere in my program and I still feel like this is ok. Once in a while, this is a meal. Thoughts?!?! Be honest!

    Refried Beans

Just because you can does not mean you should. Eat small bites for 20 minutes and that's it. Re fried beans are pretty dense to me. I just wouldn't eat that much even if you can.

    Starbucks skinny Mocha. OMG!

I use almond milk because of the high sugar in milk. A month or so ago I made an 8 oz protein shake with 1% milk and my tummy just didn't feel good after that. I should try again because then I wouldn't have to add the calories in the protein powder.

    Working post op

It was hard for me at one of my jobs. I work prn and so I'm in different places. I really had to time things out, when to stop drinking so I could eat and when I could begin drinking again. Vitamins was also difficult at first at work. It's all worked out and it gets easier!

    Gummy Vitamins?

Just make sure gummies have at least 22 vitamins and minerals. You could also take the pills, depending how long ago your surgery was.
  10. I take 10,000 of biotin per day and sometimes take 15,000. I use the shampoos and conditioners supposedly that help hair loss. I had thick hair and have lost a lot of hair. Like others said, not sure if biotin and all that is futile. I still do it but don't think it helps. I also get over 60 or 70 g of protein daily. Still. Falls. Out. I know it will grow back...
  11. My team told me some size bites. I try to but sometimes I take a little bit bigger bites (still less than a quarter size). What size are your bites? How far out are you? I am two months out.

    Losing dedication for surgery.

I didn't stop the journey, but I definitely had doubts. I had my first appointment with the surgeon in April and I was expecting quick turnarounds with insurance. After a month of not hearing if I was approved, stress at work, and just old habits, I went back to eating ice cream every night. I'm glad I stuck with it, though. I got back on track before surgery and lost 20 pounds before surgery at the end of June. There are so many times I think if I hadn't had this surgery, I'd eat that donut, or pizza, or cake, or Oreo....list goes on. I feel so much better now although I know I still have to work on this for the rest of my life. I am trying to work on myself now, as I know this will be long term. If I would've waited until my mind was right before surgery, I'd be getting fatter and more unhealthy. I'd never have had the surgery. Good luck

90 Days Out - Menu Ideas?

I'm pretty boring and can only eat around 1/4 cup too. I'm interested in what others say. I was doing a green smoothie for breakfast but I felt like I was drinking my day away and I felt hungrier throughout the day. Weird. So I'll have eggs for breakfast. If I do Greek yogurt (Oikos Triple Zero), I put flax or chia seeds in it and some fruit. Still a protein shake in there. Fish. Ground turkey (taco meat, in a simmer sauce). I need ideas too!

    Hair loss

Mine started pretty soon with a little more ham normal but now at 3 months, a LOT comes out every time I wash and dry plus every time I run my hands through my hair I get a bunch out. My husband says, "wow, you weren't kidding about losing your hair," when he sees what I get out in the shower!
  15. Quest protein bars are good! I got a sample pack online and they have them at target or sprouts too. Could you find other protein powders? I like Inspire protein powders from bariatriceating.com. Icannot stand the premier protein anymore.
  16. AZBlackhawk

    Let's talk protein shakes ?!

Don't worry if the topic has been done before, most have!!😊 I like Inspire shakes from Bariatric Eating. Lots of flavors and relatively easy to mix. I also add spinach and fruit to those shakes, although not a lot at all. I used to enjoy Premier protein shakes but they have been sitting in my pantry for a couple of months now. I really only use Inspire.
  17. RNY is still the Gold Standard for WLS. I work in healthcare so I believe in opting for a procedure that is the gold standard. I didn't have much heartburn before surgery, only sometimes, but didn't want to have to worry about that. I read about people revising from the sleeve to bypass. I didn't want to have to do that.

    Exercise!?! What's that?

I would walk. Also, consider asking your surgeon for a physical therapist referral. Trainers are good, but being obese and never having exercise, you want appropriate exercises, not just things that may injure your body. A physical therapist treats people with diseases, obesity is a disease. Then once stable with a Physical therapist, think about a gym.

How many calories do you eat per day?

I'm about 3 months post RNY. I usually eat about 500-700. Usually in the 600's somewhere. I aim for 65+ grams of protein so if I'm low, I'll have a shake to add protein which bumps up my calories towards the end of the day. I'm consistently losing.
  20. AZBlackhawk

    Eggs?

My surgeon allowed it after a week.
  21. Are you getting enough water daily? My team said when ppl call the office complaining of nausea, that's the first question they ask. At least 64 oz per day.
  22. AZBlackhawk

    Hair loss

Oh my! 2.5 months out and today in the shower I got the most ever. Then drying my hair and of course just when I run through my hair with my hands!! I use shampoo and conditioner that's supposed to help but it does not. I use Biotin, take my vitamins, and get at least 65+ G protein daily. This is gonna suck!

    Essential Oils

My NUT recommended flavoring water with essential oils. I haven't yet bc I don't know which ones are "edible" but it sounds interesting.

    Free of Sugar Free

After RNY, I had sf hello only for a week while on liquids. I would think chocolate syrup and Ff milk would be too high in sugars! How long do you need this stuff. Would Greek yogurt be a substitute for pudding?

    My sleeve is too big

Does your surgeon's office offer a nutritionist or any support? Talk to them. I agree, you need filling food. If Greek yogurt is convenient for you, add some flax meal or chia seeds. How is your water intake? At least 64 oz per day? Find Dr Duc Vuong on Facebook so many free videos and he also has sleeveacademy.com check that out I would also think if you aren't chewing food, maybe that act is causing you to be hungry I find when I have all the same texture, I'm not as satisfied
