I am I crazy for considering surgery
True. I am willing to bet that the New Bariatric Wing at the Osais of Hope Hospital is as good or better than many in the states. There is a video posted of it in this forum. I honestly believe based on all of the research I have done that it can be just as safe to have this surgery in Mexico. I will definitely post my experiences afterwards.

I am I crazy for considering surgery
This sounds very hypocritical or do as I say and not as I do. Why shouldn't others also have the same opportunity to improve their health with WLS as you did? Many people cannot afford the prices in the USA for self pay and I think if they do their research they can find a great surgeon and hospital in Mexico.

I am I crazy for considering surgery
I have been very happy with the BP team MX coordinators and have selected Dr. Illan as my surgeon. I will be having my surgery on May 15th. I am seeing my Endocrinologist today for a checkup and I will ask him to do my follow up blood work for me. I am nervous about the surgery, but not because I am going to Mexico. I am very confident in my choice of surgeons. I know complications can happen no matter where I have the surgery done. Have you talked with Bill Yanez or Dr. Illan yet? I wish you good luck on your decision.

May sleevers?
I am self pay also and going to Mexico for my surgery. I have been researching for about 6 months, but now that it is getting so close I am feeling a little anxious myself. One thing that's i am doing is reading successful stories and staying away from the negative stuff. I know complications can happen, but I need to focus on the positive reasons I decided to have this surgery. I know this is going to change my life for the better. So my advice to you and all of us May sleevers is to keep a positive attitude and to believe in ourselves!!!

Why Did You Gain Weight?
My weight issues did not start until I was 39-40. I was always the skinny girl who could eat anything and never had any problems maintaining a normal weight. My weight issues started when my thyroid went nuts. I have Hashimottos and my metabolism took a nose dive and I started gaining weight. It was several years before my GP finally tested my thyroid function and even now I am still under treated and had to switch doctors hoping for better treatment. When I gained weight I also became Insulin resistant and now have type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. I have been depressed over my weight gain and ensuing health issues. I have always been a very active person and the fatigue I feel now drives me insane. I can't wait to have my surgery!!!

VSG and hasimotto thyroid disorder
Hearing that others with hypothyroidism have reached and are maintaining their goal weight gives me so much hope!! Thank you for responding.

VSG and hasimotto thyroid disorder
I am wondering if having thyroid issues prevents weight loss even after surgery? I have been researching this because it is a fear that i cant seem to shake. I have read some posts where insurance won't approve if you have any thyroid conditions. I am self pay so that isn't a problem for me. I have been taking armour thyroid for about 3 years now. I am not on an optimal dose yet. I expect my endo to raise it at my next appt. on the 26th. If I am on the correct dosage will i lose weight on average the same as someone without thyroid conditions? I am ok with losing slow I just want to get to my goal weight eventually.

Lurker finally asking questions: Who did you tell?
I can relate to just about everything you have written above. I am 5' 9" and weigh about 220. I gained my weight about 8-9 years ago and my body just does not do well at this weight. I have type 2 diabetes now and I am hoping it will go in remission after this surgery. I can't get below 200 lbs on my own. I really want to lose down to 150 and maintain there if I can. Good luck to you!!

I was wondering the same thing. My BMI is 31 and I will be having surgery on May 15th with Dr. Illan. I only have a three day pre-surgery diet also. I think I am going to just eat sensibly like I am now anyway lol. I am starting to get really excited now that it is only a month away!!!

Lurker finally asking questions: Who did you tell?
Hi there. Your story sounds so similar to mine!! I will be having surgery with Dr.Illan on May 15th and the only people I have told are my husband and my 2 adult children. I don't plan on telling anyone else as I just don't want to have to defend my decision to anyone.
-
What is your pre-op diet?
I am having my sleeve done in Mexico and I think because my BMI is 31-32 I only have a 3 day pre-op diet. It is 2 protein shakes a day with a lean meat and vegetable for dinner on day 1 and 2, and then clear liquids the day before.

Finally Did it
I want to wish you many blessings on your journey to a healthier you. Your story touched me and inspired me.
