I am wondering if having thyroid issues prevents weight loss even after surgery? I have been researching this because it is a fear that i cant seem to shake. I have read some posts where insurance won't approve if you have any thyroid conditions. I am self pay so that isn't a problem for me.

I have been taking armour thyroid for about 3 years now. I am not on an optimal dose yet. I expect my endo to raise it at my next appt. on the 26th. If I am on the correct dosage will i lose weight on average the same as someone without thyroid conditions? I am ok with losing slow I just want to get to my goal weight eventually.

I don't have Hashimotto's, but I am hypothyroid.

I am 5 months post op and have been losing weight fairly steadily. I have only had a few "stalls" along the way.

I just had a check up with my thyroid doctor, because I was in the hospital a couple of weeks ago and my thyroid levels were high. I had been on 175mcgs of Levothyroxine for over 2 years. When I saw my doctor, he upped my thyroid med dosage to 200mcgs. I have been having dizzy spells and very low energy/lethargy and he said he hoped the change in dosage would help.

I was actually surprised that my thyroid was off and required an increase in med.... I had thought it might be the other way around... that I would have to go down on med dosage after losing so much weight.

As for me, I don't think my thyroid issues have kept me from losing weight. Sometimes the weight slowly comes off, but sometimes I will lose 4 or 6 pounds in a week.

Oh, also. My insurance approved me even with thyroid problems, but I also had some other things that qualified me: incisional hernias and sleep apnea.

My Insurance is paying for mines, i have no co-morbidity but I have Hoshimoto's. i was hoping the sleeve would help me lose some weight and jumpstart my metabolism. But after reading some post on here and online i'm getting discouraged. I believe my insurance is paying because my BMI is 40 and it has to be at 35 befor they would consider you..

I eventually lost 100 pounds and reached my goal weight in a little less than 18 months. What matters the most is that I have been able to maintain my weight loss with precision. My current weight fluctuates only by a pound or so. I am also happy about being able to eat in the 1900 to 2100 calorie per day range to maintain.

Hearing that others with hypothyroidism have reached and are maintaining their goal weight gives me so much hope!! Thank you for responding.

Thank you so much. You made me feel much better. I wasn't going to go through with it. I don't mind losing my weight slow. Just as long as I'm able to lose it.

Apple 1 i have graves and hashimotos my endo highly approved me getting weight loss surgery after asking him i had the same concerns as you. I was in remission when i got the surgery december 4th. After two months i seen the endo and found that my hashis came back. I have been losing weight my surgeon says im losing but not like he expected but im still losing is the point. My endo says that sometimes with the weight loss the hashis corrects itself so he did not put me on pills. I have lost about 80pounds so far for some that is considered normal weight loss i had a ds.

I had thyroid problems way before I considered weight loss surgery. The doctor found the problem, I went for a biopsy and it turned out to be cancer. I had my thyroid removed 2 1/2 years ago and have bern taking levothyroxine since. I was sleeved on April 24th. I have been consistently losing weight. I don't believe you will have a problem. A big thank you to everyone that has responded. I am very hopeful that I will reach my goal despite having hashimotos. I had my surgery on May 15th and so far everything is going well.
