Soyounique reacted to Greensleevie in NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!
Dr Matthew Weiner has a great video about this topic, and states that carbonation stretching the stomach (especially a sleeve) is a myth. My surgeon also concurs.
The problem with soda are the CALORIES, NOT the carbonation. Empty, non nutritious calories are the fastest way to gain weight for a WLS patient because they go down so easily. It's silly to think the pressure from a few carbonation bubbles will "stretch" anything. Aside from the natural stretching that happens years out, it would take years of systematically over eating to the point of sickness to stretch a sleeve significantly because the fundus, or stretchy part, has been removed during surgery. Dr Weiner has no issues with carbonated waters or selzers as tolerated.
At 3.5 years post op, I drink carbonation periodically and can eat just as much as any one else as far out as me. It has not stretched anything. It's really time to put that myth to rest.

I'm confused as to why this is an argument.
#1 there are very big risks to this surgery. We all are informed of that going in. We do it for the reward in spite of the risk. So someone died. Tragic event and all together possible. Why deny this one when we know it's a risk?
#2 how hard is it to sign a contract saying you'll bring an adult companion with you to Mexico and then bring a teen companion? Saying it's not possible to bring a teen is like saying it's not possible to lie. Goodness.
#3 Not every surgeon has deaths for the simple fact that some Surgeons are a bit more picky on whom they operate on - agreeing to less risky patients or requiring patients take steps to become less risky (ex. lose weight) prior to authorization. If you haven't seen "my 600 pound life" where it discusses surgeons who refuse to operate on certain individuals, then you haven't done the most basic of research. Though asking your own surgeon is probably easier. People go to Mexico for surgery usually because they want a cheaper and more easily approved surgery with a surgeon who won't deny them so quickly or require more effort on the patient part before hand. The fact that more people die on a table with this route is the risk you take when you choose cheap and "easy" over harder and more expensive. If you're shocked by it, then I fear you haven't considered common sense.

I don't know if it's " normal " .. But I was ravenous! I thought I was gonna scream uncontrollably. or eat something I shouldn't... 😝 it does get a little better as your meal plan includes more choices... In the meantime, force yourself to drink until hunger goes away .. Good luck! 😉
    P.S. don't watch food commercials 😨

I have lost 180 pounds. No one asks if I had surgery.
Last summer I was walking 5 to 10 miles a day my friends are on fitbit with me, they saw that.
I eat literally all day. I eat every 2 hours but I don't eat carbs. People see that too. Steaks, pork chops and other Proteins. I will sit and pick all the croutons out a salad, people see that.
If you actually living an active lifestyle and eating healthy no one questions what you are doing.
In spite of what people think, the weight doesn't just drop off in a month. I lost 10 to 12 pounds most months, a steady decline but nothing insane. Most women lose at that pace after WLS.
98% of the population thinks diet, exercise and will power is enough to lose weight, if they see you actually practicing these they don't even consider surgery.
WLS is still a pretty rare thing and an outside idea to most people.
90% of the people saying tell, are always men. Spend one week as a woman dealing with other women and get back to me on people being supportive.
Also I don't know why new people think we don't eat a lot of food. Most WLS patients that are successful eat often. People are not seeing that you are eating 4 ounces at a time. They are seeing that you eat every 2 to 3 hours which is insane to most people. Also the amount of time you only eat very little is like 3 months max. Get real.

Besides forums, IRL, I avoid giving people any weight loss or fitness advice. This isn't my life. I don't want to be the weight loss go to person. First of all most people aren't serious and it is a waste of time. All you have to do is say I eat Keto or I don't eat carbs and they lose interest. I have lost weight before low carbing and so have other people. Most people don't want to give up carbs to lose weight. They just want to eat whatever in moderation.

I give back to the universe by posting on forums. Although honestly it is pretty pointless because the pre-ops and people less than 6 months from surgery think they know everything.

I decided I didn't want to drink alcoholic beverages when I was 22yrs old.. (Wish I had given up sugar as easily) I told everyone since there was nothing I would do drunk, that I wouldn't do sober... Let's cut out the middle man and save the hangover! I was ALWAYS the life of the party! (And designated driver) ... So show your friends you still know how to have a good time.. Or forget em! Find new friends! ?

I would like info re: low carb vs low calorie... In the past I have found that eating a low carb meal plan worked best for me... But my surgical team and nutritionist only advise low calorie meal plans... So I can't get any how- to advise from them. Has anyone tried low carb? Any advise?? ?
