Keto is great for losing, but can you eat that way for the rest of your life in maintenance?

Today I Celebrate my 1 year anniversary of my sleeve surgery!
It's amazing how much has changed in a year! I've lost 118lbs. I've gone from a tight size 28 jean to a loose 18, and a 4X shirt to an XL. I recently fit in an airplane seat comfortably and didn't need a seat belt extender. I love clothes shopping now, can pound out an hour on the elliptical with ease, and can paint my own toenails AND breathe at the same time! =)
I still have about 60 lbs to go, but I have no doubts that I will get there. I feel amazing already, and it's only going to keep getting better from here.

My 3 month a1c was 5.1 and day 2 after surgery was my last medication for diabetes. When I check I am usually 97-100! God's Blessing. Not fear of blindness, kidney failure or aputation of feet or any other diabetetic complicarions.

I want to hear from you! I'm going through with a modified, less extreme version of the DS! I've done my homework, grilled my doctor and his nurse for multiple hours and I'm prepared for this 100%. I have no fear of committing to Vitamins, diet or anything else.
Still, I'm dying to learn from personal accounts. So DS post-op people...what important things did you learn that you wish someone had warned you about beforehand?

I am loving life again and I am off all my medications this was a life saver and I am feeling beautiful everyday. Good luck on your surgery and congrats for making the choice to be healthy.

I think the most important thing is to let you surgeon know your concerns.

I have been on this forum for over two years and have found that carbonation is definitely not a myth. Most doctors that are asked say to not drink carbonated drinks. Period. It can and has had a negative effect on not only losing weight but also keeping it off. So I would follow my surgeon's instructions regarding carbonation.

I wrote about this in 2015 when I was sleeved. It's a hot topic and I got a lot of grief from others.
    1. The big issue is babying your WLS post surgery. Not all surgeries are equal. Sleeves are the most minimally invasive and based on reviewing guidelines worldwide, I found them ranging from no wait (in England) to 1 year in most major US programs. I went with two months, but eased in very delicately. Speaking to doctors, I learned that the sleeve is pretty much healed after 6 weeks. I have also heard that a Gastric Bypass is less tolerant since you're no longer using the tough stomach tissue to process the  food you eat.
    2. The next big issue is your liver. When you are losing a lot of weight in a hurry (like most WLS patients), your liver is working overtime. I waited until I was close to reaching my goal and drank extra  Water before and after my very weak  drinks.
    3. Beyond those two major health considerations, the biggest is your weight loss success. Alcohol is empty calories and when we drink, we make bad food choices. I always counted the calories in my drinks, which kept me on distilled alcohol and Water. I also always planned what I was going to eat BEFORE drinking and stuck to it.
    4. Although not a risk for everyone, transfer addiction is a real risk for people who may have been addicted to overeating or anything else. I have read many stories from people who never drank before WLS, but were addicted to eating or soda and became alcoholics after.
    5. The carbonation myth has no basis in medical research. I researched it extensively and found zero long term issue from any doctors. I also observed that many obese people drank sugary soda all day long, which is why most programs tell us not to drink it. It should be avoided until tolerated following your surgery. I tried it after 6 months and it upset my stomach. Today, I can drink a little, but not much (12 ounces over a few hour timespan). Of course if you were addicted to soda or beer before WLS, be very careful.
These are the biggies, let me know if you have any further questions...

Hi everyone! I am at the absolute start of my journey and in the learning phase. I start with a mandatory seminar on the 7th which will likely be the beginning of a six month adventure prior to surgery if everything goes as planned. I feel like I have come across a lot of conflicting information and I am not sure if it's all just a case of your mileage may vary or if my sources are just bad. I'm hoping someone can straighten me out.
I have heard that you can never take NSAIDS again. I have also heard they can be taken but with an acid reducer. Which is true?
I have heard that the surgery fixes reflux and GERD. I have heard that people who never had heartburn pre-op now have it daily.
I have heard that there are some foods you can NEVER eat again. I have heard that in time you can eat anything again just in moderation. Which is true?
I have heard that there is a high percentage of addiction transfer. I have also heard that simply isn't true.
I have heard sugar and fat cause dumping. I have heard neither of these things cause dumping or ymmv(your mileage may vary)
I have heard everyone is constipated all the time. I have heard there is chronic loose stools.

I'm wracking my brain because I know there is more I have read. I'm sort of in information overload right now. Thanks for your help, patience and time.

KrisZ reacted to triplethreat in Gastric sleeve with BMI of 35 - planning ahead
I was sleeved with BMI of 34. I was able to stay "acceptably overweight" until my last pregnancy; turning 40 really changed my metabolism and each year, I gained more, became pre diabetic and my BP was no longer controllable with meds. My mother is obese and in a wheelchair, and I felt like that was one possible outcome for me if I didn't do something. I'm at a healthy BMI now; I still need BP Meds (can't change genetics!) but I'm otherwise very healthy. I can exercise and have lots of energy-- like you, I wanted to be here for my children and future grandchildren. I'm happy with my choice and wish I'd done it sooner.
