SunshineUnicorn reacted to Cindy Gengler in Almost 9 months out
My husband and I both had the RNY on September 6th 2016. We are now almost 9 months out and have lost a lot of weight. My husband started out at 496 lbs and is now down to 305 lbs. I started out at 304 lbs and am now down to 175 lbs. We have had a long journey together but are both making great progress so far. His first goal weight is to get down to 250 lbs and mine is to get down to 150 lbs. In hoping to hit my 150 lb mark by June 16th which is the date of our 9 month check up. It is now getting harder for me to lose weight because I'm getting closer to my goal weight. But I am determined to still try my best the next 4 weeks to get the last 25 lbs off.
After 5 months out from surgery I had surgery on my left achilles tendon and was not active of mobile for 2 full months so that really slowed me down for awhile. But now I'm back to work, excersing more and training for my very first 5K for September 30th of this year.
The photo shows our change in the past year and I am very proud of both of us!

SunshineUnicorn reacted to abjale in 4 month out with thoughts and feelings (and pics!)
My gastric bypass surgery was 4 months ago--January 23rd 2017.

    Age: 22
    Height: 5ft
    High weight: 220
    Surgery weight: 214
    Current weight: 158
    Goal weight: 150 (so close!)

I've tried to make a point of taking a picture when I hit a 10 pound weight loss mark. I had the surgery to avoid future comorbidities because with PCOS and hypothyroid issues (not to mention a whole list of family illnesses I'm at risk of) this surgery was my best chance of reaching a healthy weight and keeping it.
Im not out of the woods yet! 4 months out and 8 pounds from my goal this process has been the hardest thing I've ever done. Here are a few things I've noticed:
I started at a lower weight and I cannot compare my weight loss journey to others and I would caution other people from doing the same. ive stopped comparing the pounds I have lost to the pounds of others. It will rob you of joy. Celebrate your successes.
Physicaly: I feel strong. Like hulk strong. i can cross my legs now! How bout that!? Yet I don't think that I have all my energy back. I'm lethargic, I get tired easily, I sleep A LOT.
Getting in enough Protein is a struggle. Remembering to take all those Vitamins is a struggle too. I find that when I forget the reaction is usually delayed. 2 or 3 days down the road it hits me hard.
I now wear a size 12/14. I started at a 22. I went to a wedding over the weekend and got several comments about how thin I looked from people who hadn't seen me since before my surgery. I'm very open when I talk about this surgery (I know that not everyone is because, let's face it, there are some really ignorant judgemental people who have no idea what it's like) and I do try to educate if people seem genuinely interested in finding out. The positive voices in my life tend to drown out the negative ones.
Im loosing hair by the fistful. It's alarming! My self confidence and drive is at an all-time high. It's fantastic! I've started working out and I even began Insanity. I have really good days and I have days where I break down. My teeth are starting to have problems. My face looks older. My skin is sagging. Shopping for clothing is both exhilarating and frustrating. I've donated bags and bags to goodwill and there is still a nagging voice in the back of my head that says one day I might need them again.
Everyone at work and everyone in my family knows I've had the surgery. It keeps me accountable but I also feel that it puts a lot of pressure on me to "deliver". In the years to come I wonder how quickly people will look me up and down and speculate about my weight. Have I gained? Have I lost? And I know they will because (I'm sad to say) I do this to others all the time. Ive made some friends who've had the surgery--some who've kept the weight off and others who haven't. I don't take a single pound that I shed for granted.
I don't crave food as much. It's like some spell that made me a ravenous binge eater is, at least for now, broken. People ask if I regret the surgery and depending on the day, you'll get a different answer. I'm enjoying the journey.

    anyone else feel this way?

And the hard work? That's the stuff I've done in therapy. food was a self destruct button: the work is in fixing what made me push it and of course, in not seeking other even more dangerous buttons.
I love new me and I've forgiven and love old me - but she ain't coming back!

I still have 5 more days of my pre-op diet (for a total of 14 days) before my sleeve on March 8th! The nerves and excitement haven't quite set in yet..still fills surreal but I'm so ready!

SunshineUnicorn reacted to Navigating the Wilderness in A little love for post VSG surgery patients with kids.
I am just about to pass one month from when I had VSG surgery performed...and while there have been many stories already posted here mentioning the ups and downs after surgery, I am going to focus on one group that I have the utmost respect for:
POST VSG (or any WLS) Surgery Patients with kids!
There are tons of posts in here from parents who literally go home from surgery and start cooking for their children the next day. These people cook food they themselves want to eat, but can't. They are tempted by the food the rest of the family considers 'normal', but is no longer part of our new eating culture.
As I sat home crying while I fought against the horrible cravings that presented while on my liquid diet, I thought how the hell do these people do it? The only answer is they are truly special individuals. Bariatric heroes if you will. I do not have children and thus did not have to contend with this issue, but I could not help but think there is absolutely no way I could deal with cooking for others while only having liquids.
I think you are all awesome. If your kids and/or spouse does not tell you that you are awesome everyday, come back and read the following sentence. You Are Awesome!!!
It took me 3 weeks straight to untangle the wicked web of carbs and sugar, but it has finally come. I have lost 35 pounds this month. I feel like after all that I just need to let the unsung heroes of WLS know that there are people out here who hold you in very high regard. You are my heroes!!

Its been a while since I have been on here. Its been 16 months since my surgery. I went from 270 to 135. I am almost to goal. Its true what they say about the honeymoon period enjoy it while it lasts. Hunger comes back again. Some good days and some bad days but a good support group can help you get through that. Take what you learned in nutrition and utilize it to the fullest. I have NO regrets. This surgery helped me get to to a weight that I can feel motivated to STAY AT! Gives you reason to fight to stay there! I have been lucky and SO FAR no issues at all post op. Here is an updated photo. Until next time... yours truly, Melissa.

I have found that most people who have an over reliance on the tool itself to prevent them from eating certain foods as opposed to utilizing to the tool along side a total change in lifestyle usually struggle with success in the long run.

Get whatever surgery you think is best for you, and utilize the tool, don't depend on it. Dependence will let you down every time.

    Hey y'all!!
Long time, no talk - training for a half marathon and work has been insane lately!
My two year surgiversary was November 20th, and I tried on my old Cotton Ball dress because it was hanging in my closet, lol. (Cotton Ball is a southern cotillion ball - traditional thing with debutantes, etc. - I was 17 when I did it).
Left is from my wedding <3 that dress is a size 28; the one on the right is a size 8 (I'm a 6 generally, but bridal does run small!)
