"Animal studies have convincingly proven that artificial sweeteners cause body weight gain. A sweet taste induces an insulin response, which causes blood sugar to be stored in tissues, but because blood sugar does not increase with artificial sweeteners, there is hypoglycemia and increased food intake." "One reference showed, in patients with Type II diabetes, that the reduction of plasma glucose and insulin levels during exercise was similar after a sucrose meal compared to an aspartame-sweetened meal.[49] These results were obtained even though the aspartame meal contained 22% less calories and 10% less carbohydrates." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3198517/ "Taste and reward signaling in the brain is immensely complex. Research is only beginning to understand how altered brain activity with prolonged use of artificial sweeteners may impact our health long-term." https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/mind-guest-blog/tricking-taste-buds-but-not-the-brain-artificial-sweeteners-change-braine28099s-pleasure-response-to-sweet/ There is a ton of research on sweeteners, brain chemistry and satiety. The point is foods should be as natural as possible and sugar isn't a devil. Years of yo-yo dieting is the real problem and crap genetics.

    How much time?

Gas pain was an issue for me until about day 5-6. The very low calories is the real issue. You're just wiped.
  3. It's also very high in vitamin A. Fats aren't an enemy. I've eaten it and I'm purée. I take tiny bites and haven't had an issue. I do 1 oz and 1 oz hummus.

    Sleeve reset

Okay so you had a baby and only gained 10 lbs? Sorry just wanted to say that's amazing.

    Any nurses who got sleeved?

ER nurse in a busy department. Sleeved 3/29 back 4/18. Doc wants me wearing an abdominal binder as a reminder not to lift. 12 hour shifts. Everyone knows I had the procedure as I've been very open with my coworkers.
  6. I was told as long as I tolerate it I can chew it. I quit smoking a few years ago and replaced it with ice cubes gum.

What I think is funny is how collectively there's this distain for any real sugar but aspartame loaded items that are plan approved are fine. They work on the brain in the exact same way. To answer the OPs question I had 2 teaspoons of sugar free frozen yogurt at 10 days out because I went to FoYo with my daughter and I wanted to feel somewhat close to normal.
  8. Tonight I cooked dinner for my family. I made panko and Parmesan coated chicken breasts with a cream leek sauce and garlic and dill mashed potatoes. My hubs and my daughter sat down to their plates and I sat down to my half cup of mashed cauliflower. We joked about what Thanksgiving was going to look like, if I'd even be able to get dinner down. I laughed with them but it hurt a little because my normal is now different. This moment will pass as we redefine what it means to eat and to be social.
  9. I was sleeved yesterday and I can tolerate much of anything PO. Despite their best efforts to medicate me I get violently il. So I'm off Narcs now and just trying to walk as much as I can.
  10. Peeps are disgusting. Not because they have sugar etc but because they taste horrible. I feel free to judge Peeps and feel like the company that makes them should feel bad due to their substandard product.

    Day 2

Day 17 - down 22 lbs from surgery. Heading back to work on Tuesday. Currently on purees. Some residual nerve damage/pain to the left of my belly button. Chewable probiotics might be my best friend. Incisions are almost all the way healed. Wearing an abdominal binder for additional support/gentle reminder not to lift.

    Anybody dislike their surgeon?

Nurses have a saying, "Beware the friendly surgeon."
  13. My hubs went on a carb restricted diet when I started getting to preop things. He wanted to get healthy with me. My surgeon clears us for sex as soon as we feel up to it. It was nice and good for him and I both. Just talk to your husband as openly and honestly as possible about what you'd like.

    Tired of eggs

Breakfast is any food you eat in the morning that goes down and stays down.
  15. You're eating a bowl of soup? I measure out half a cup and time myself. I get physical pain if I try to eat too fast. A premier takes me 40 mins at this stage.
  16. Trust me - there is no way you can embarrass yourself. I put IVs in people all the time and I've seen grown men covered in tattoos with tears streaming down their face when I tell them I have to insert an IV. Don't worry about it your care team has seen everything.
  17. There is a difference between support and enabling. Does he live alone? Is there a significant other? What specifically is he struggling with? Has he gone to therapy? Is he seeing a therapist now? You may not think that you're constantly over him but what is his perception? Have you asked him what he wants from you? What troubles me the most is he should be the one on the board looking for advice and help. That would indicate true insight into his personal feeling of need for help.
  18. They listen to me b***h on the occasion that I feel like bitching. I don't like that they feel like they have to censor what their eating all the time around me. Life is about balance. I think about macros and not calories. MyFitnessPal I know you mean well but I think you should really back off. This was his choice and you're enabling him. There is nothing worse than feeling like your friends and family are judging everything you're eating and you in the process. It's not like we get surgery and magically we love kale and running. I don't mean to be cheeky but at the same time if any of my friends were as involved with my life as you are with his we'd be having a long conversation about boundaries.
  19. There is no way you're going to be able to handle 12 hour shifts after only a week. If you can take more time do it now. Take at least two weeks. I'm feeling like the 2 1/2 weeks I took as an ER nurse weren't enough. My surgical group usually has bedside nurses out for at least four weeks.
  20. Everything tea cup said for sure. I wore my own clothes starting from the evening of surgery and I really think it helped put me in the mind frame of independence and getting out of the hospital.
  21. Insentive spirometers are used to encourage deep breathing and coughing to try and avoid post anesthesia pneumonia - has nothing to do with CO2.

    March

Thanks! I made it home, walked around the block and now I'm about to nap with my dog which is way better than being in the hospital.

    Day 2

You are so lucky that you didn't have gas pains!

Sleeved on 3/29. Still in the hospital should discharge today. The only thing I can tolerate is herbal unsweetened tea. I had crazy nausea with narcs so I can only take Tylenol now for pain. I walk a lot and it helps but the trapped gas is the worst.
  25. As I am on my surgery eve I think about what I've learned by starving. For two weeks I've been taking in far fewer calories than I burn. My sense of smell is heightened, I'm lightheaded, fatigued, and because my hormones are flooding I am sad and introspective. I think,"What a luxury it is to choose to starve." Through this process I think of people who have no choice and here my body has grown due to my careless disregard of abundance. How amazingly blessed I've been.
