  1. 5 month surgiversary today. I'm down 84 lbs, less than 22 lbs to normal BMI which is my goal.

I could not be more happy. In a month I see my neurosurgeon to decide I'm having back surgery on 10/3 or not. Hoping new MRI pictures will show an improvement in my back compared to the pictures in March.

Yes, so far. I had it on June 26th. Slow healing but all the pressure on my sciatic nerves has been relieved. I'm getting sleeved so I can take the rest of the 100lbs of extra weight off my body!!

I had one on 12/14/15, and it worked for a while, but weight gain made it not last, which is why I had the surgery. I'm hoping the weight loss will prevent a new one. I'm over 50 lbs less now than at the last back surgery. @Geri Marie

  2. It's normal. The surgery messes with our hormones big time. Some people who just had theirs, will get it right after surgery again. It is very normal for the surgery to jump start your period. And it might be wonky for a few months because of all the hormones that are being released as you are losing fat. It will go back to normal again.

    I'm really hungry

I was also hungry shortly after surgery, despite being allowed to eat by day 4. Turns out my acid reducers weren't working and it wasn't really hunger but acid I was feeling.
  5. So are you, seriously. It'll be interesting to see if we keep following each other. I take nothing for granted though, it can slow down or stop at any moment.
  6. So according to that calculator I should weigh 138 lbs. I have set my goal at 149. 9 lbs because it gives me a normal BMI. I have calculated out from that number. If I am to get down to 138, I have at this point lost 64.5% of my excess weight. I'm still ahead of the chart, which has me at 70 lbs lost at 5 months, and I'm at 80.9 lbs
  7. True, still interested though. I have lost 76.5% of my excess weight at this point. No idea how much muscle I have retained. Hope to get it retested at my 6 months check up.
  8. Wow, our stats are so similar. It goes to show how different we all are and that one size does not fit all. I didn't have an option to not workout because of my back, I also love working out. But it's so interesting to see how different approaches has given so similar results. I work out because I like it, and that is really important. If working out is going to be more of a pain and bother, wait. If you have medical reasons as to why it would be good for you to work out, do it, but don't overdo it. As overweight people we have more muscles then the normal weight person because we have to carry our own weight. As we lose weight, there is less to carry, so we will lose muscles if we don't work out (lift weights). Muscles burn calories. So I work out because it's fun, I want to keep my muscles, and because I'm motivated to do it. It's not something I have to, but I want to.
  9. I'm hungry all the time. I have been lucky to be able to eat solids since day 4, as per my program, but I still get hungry after like 2-4 hours, depending on what I eat. I could never go half a day without eating. At 6 weeks I got cleared to eat everything, and first thing I tried was salty licorice (favorite). I have tried different things, some has failed (dairy based ice cream is a big no no), some, no problem. My surgeon/NUT team state again and again that I'm no longer on a diet. I should focus on protein, the rest is up to me. And in order to get my protein in, I'm not able to eat a ton of carbs and sugar, but I still have some. This past weekend I had sushi for the first time, a whole 5 small maki. I just made sure my protein for the rest of the day was good. I'll be 5 months out on Sunday.
  10. Here in Austria we are on clear liquids on day one, full on day two, puree on day 3 and solids on day 4. We have to chew chew chew until it's puree and then some, but I had solids from day 4. I had several restrictions until week 6 (any kinds of seeds, too fatty food, too sugary food, and a lot more), but I eat babybell cheese on day 4 with no problem. One took me 20 min to eat, and I was full. It amazes me how different the programs can be.
  11. A point I want to make is that when you are obese, your stored fat is holding a lot of things in place. Once your fat is slowly disappearing, you need muscles to do that job. A lot of people who has had wls feel amazing afterwords. Knees are not hurting anymore etc. Then, several months out, things are starting to hurt again. This is often because things are not supported like it used to. With my program, we got an exercise program before surgery. It was a generic one, but had 10 exercises you could to at home with minimal equipment, and it started easy and it had ways to make it harder. We went through the whole program with physical therapists before the surgery and was encouraged to start before surgery, and start up again at 3 weeks out. I started walking a little over a week after surgery (I had to have a nerveblock for a herniated disk that got moved during surgery so I couldn't really do anything for the first week or so). I started lifting weights 2 a week at 3-4 weeks (I was in a program for my back, so it was supervised). I walk everywhere, and average between 12 000 and 20 000 steps a day. The program I was in is over, so I'm now lifting 2-3 times a week, but only like 10 min warm-up and 45 min of lifting tops. I also do nordic walking. I have had a steady weight loss since 2 weeks before surgery (I have had a loss every week except one), I have now lost over 80 lbs. I eat carbs (but I naturally restrict because I can't tolerate to much. I eat them though). I am anywhere from 800-1200 calories at this point. I'll be 5 months out on Sunday. I don't really do protein shakes, I get my protein from food. I eat around 80g a day. If I want more or I have had a day outside of my routine, I'll sometimes do a shake.
  12. This person is obese This highlights how absurd BMI is. This picture is from last Monday. I was 183 lbs. BMI 30.5 I think it was. Obese class 1. When I look at that picture, I don't look obese, I don't feel obese. I don't consider myself obese. I started with an BMI of 42+, obese class 2. I have another 31 lbs to loose to reach a normal BMI. It might not happen and I'm okay with that. I have lost 74.5 lbs since two weeks before surgery (surgery date 3.20.17)

    Calorie and macro goal

I have gotten similar guidelines as you. Don't count, eat healthy. I'm down 35.6kg and I'm 4.5 months out. The only guideline I got after 6 weeks was that Protein should be 50% of what I eat, and to stay over 60g. I eat around 80-100g of protein, and try to keep it at 50% As for MFP, I have set % goals at Carbs 20%, Fat 30% and Protein 50%. Carbs and protein is just for show. It goes up and down.

Cut Calories and Excercise and no weight loss

I'm not even 5 months out from surgery and I have noticed that it's totally a slider for me as well, and it scares me a little. I'm hoping that my logic of "I chew it really well, it doesn't need that much space in my stomach as on my plate" logic is right.
  15. For me it was 3 weeks. Wounds should look good, no pain, and not overdoing it.
  16. I'm not the right person to ask, as I have gotten all my protein in with food after 4 weeks. I only had to drink one shake a day, and the rest was food until I manged to get enough with food. I haven't tried the isopure drinks. Just make sure the carb content is very very low.
  17. It really gets better. I was lucky to be in a program that has you eating normal food (with some restrictions) by day 4, so I never had to drink or puree food weeks on end. It will get better though. Try some broth, it might help with wanting some savory
  18. This is a first!

I just got back from a 3 week vacation and I lost 5.5 lbs. I don't think I have ever lost weight while on vacation.

I eat more carbs than I usually do, I was less active than I usually am, and I didn't track what I eat, just made sure I got enough protein.

Today it's back to business, tracking and eating clean. Sunday it was 5 months since I started my 2 week pre-op diet, and I'm down over 78 lbs. A few years ago it took me a whole year of diet and working out 6 days a week to drop 67 lbs. Insane.

FWIW, this has happened to me too, both times I went on vacation (well, business trips to be honest) since my surgery - one was a 10-day trip to Germany, the other a 2-day weekend in another city. Both times I dropped weight even though my food intake was not as stellar as it should have been. Which makes me think that maybe the body likes change - change of food, change of exercise, etc. and responds more eagerly as a result. Just a thought.

  19. Eat slow and maximum 20 min. If I can't finish in 20 min, I stop. I used to eat longer, but was told not to by nutritionist and surgeon.

    Still obese

Mine is 36. But I'm also not done, I still have another 31 lbs to go before I have a normal BMI. I just think it's ridiculous that my BMI indicates that I'm obese. I don't see an obese person when I look in the mirror.
  21. At 3 months I was over 60% of goal. I'll be 4 months on Thursday and I'm at 68% now. Some loose faster than others, the surgeons usually go by the average.

    Ladies:

I had mine during surgery, no tampon, but I got a giant pad to wear.

    Calories

Wow, 600 sounds really low. I'm almost 4 months out, 800-900 and have been told I'm too low and need to get more food in. As long as you are loosing, I don't see why you should go so low.
  24. Major NSV: ordered a dress from Land's End in medium. Didn't realize I ordered petite. And it fit. A little shorter than I would normally use, but I felt really comfortable wearing it. Win!
