  1. My doctor said walking only until your 2-3 week follow up appointment. After the appointment, I was cleared for cardio. At six weeks I was cleared for everything including weight lifting, core exercises, etc. I personally went back to Bootcamp at 6 weeks. Started slow but after about three weeks I started to kick some serious ass again. Now that I've lost 30+ lbs in a lot of ways it's easier than it was before - but still really really hard. Get it girl!

    Surgery glue

    I don't remember the skin around the glue being red just iodine discoloration. My glue started peeling after about a week. It was totally gone after about 3 weeks. It definitely got itchy. It also pinched me for a few days when the swelling went down. If it's really really itchy and red you may want to call your doctor to confirm you aren't having a reaction.

    I had the same problem and was meeting my water goals. My nut told me to increase protein and sodium. I am pretty sure it was the sodium for me. I never would have thought too little salt was a bad thing.
  4. I need some advice from any of you that do regular intense exercise. I go to Burn Bootcamp 4-5 times a week. Each session is 45 minutes (weight lifting, cardio, running, jumping, etc) - very intense. My nutritionist said to increase my protein to 80g/day. After I contacted her explaining my difficulty in keeping calories I'd like to hear what works for you with regard to nutrition and hydration. What you have heard from your doctor/nutritionist? Did you modify your nutrition? Do you eat or drink certain things before or after exercise? Thanks! [emoji123] [emoji123] [emoji123]

    Thanks so much! This is very very helpful!! If you are getting 150-200g of protein plus carbs, how high are your calories? Or do you not worry about them if your hitting your goals with healthy foods?

    I am about 9 weeks postop. I find some days I can go the full 45 minutes and be tired but not dead . Other days I start to fade after 30 mins. Not sure if it's nutrition, lack of sleep or other factors. I definitely feel that since about 6 weeks I have been fully recovered from the surgery itself, so I don't think it's that.

    Intense Exercise

    I am trying to find best practices. Things you've found that help you lose weight and build lean muscle without starving your body. Most people at 2 months out have an 800 calorie/day target. But I haven't found a lot of information about how to change your nutrition/eating habits when you are doing intense exercise. I'd like to compare what my nutritionist told me versus what other people have been told as there is lots of variability between doctor's offices. Any advice you have on what has or has not worked for you would be appreciated. Maybe things like... I have to eat X amount of protein or drink X amount of water before/after going to the gym. If I eat less than X calories I stall.

    Can a Smoothie Count as a Liquid

    My doctor told me not to count any food or protein shakes toward my liquids. They told us "hydrating liquids" only (e.g. water, decaf tea, Crystal light).

    I remember that about a week postop my stomach loosened (swelling went down). I went from only being able to drink .5 oz at a time to a 1-2 oz. Liquids give me very little restriction and it fades quickly. It's a sign that your body is healing. I am concerned about your emotional eating issue. Your doctor should have worked with you to resolve that prior to surgery. I suggest you see a psych about it. Your surgery won't fix your emotions/habits only your digestive system.

    Doc goal vs My goal

    I am doing the same as MowryRocks suggested. I am going to confirm my goal when I get closer to it. If I feel comfortable at a higher weight I'll stop there. But I do plan to lose about 10 lbs more than goal to account for regain.
  11. Why do you need their approval? You have 3 jobs, a house and a husband. You aren't a kid anymore. You aren't living under their roof living by their rules. As "navigating" said, fuck it. Do this for YOURSELF!

    Stomach pain when I drink

    I am 8 weeks out and although I never had pain I still feel my stomach so much more than preop. However, even that has lessened in the weeks after surgery.

  14. As long as the vitamin has all of the requirements in the article, you are good to go. The only bariatric vitamin I take is calcium citrate. I really like the Bariatric Advantage Caramel ones and it's hard to find a calcium citrate chewable. We aren't supposed to take regular calcium - calcium citrate only.
  15. Around day 7 or 8 my stomach loosened up a lot. I went from not being able to drink more than .5oz of water at a time to being able to drink 1-2 oz of protein shake.

    How is this even possible?

    I agree with previous posters. The body is complex and does not follow formulas. If you haven't been tracking inches, you should start. My trainer and I noticed that the weeks I didn't lose pounds I always lost inches. I would not discount how your body is adjusting to this new work out schedule. It may take a few weeks for it to adjust. I also recommend getting a rest day at least every 4-6 days. Even my body builder trainer doesn't work out 7 days a week.
  17. For me, the preop diet was SO much worse than postop. I agree with previous poster - stay busy! Clean out closets, read books, buy all of your postop supplies, etc. You can do this!

  19. I have definitely had a few moments of panic where I looked at my estimated goal weight and kinda freaked out. I've never been that weight as an adult!! It's scary because who will you be at that size? A major physical characteristic that society hates, that I have fought against will be gone/diminished! Now that I am postop and have lost weight faster than I planned. I am already down two dress sizes. But when I look in the mirror it's still me. A smaller me but still me. I imagine it will stay that way even when I am a "normal" size and that makes me happy.
  20. If you guys haven't tried it yet, I really love the Baritastic app. It's meant for bariatric patients. I think it's better and easier to than FitBit and MyFitnessPal.

    Another idea - if you are still taking the narcotic pain meds you may want to stop if your pain is manageable. I didn't realize how awful they were messing me feel until I stopped taking them.

    Me too! My chin breaks out almost every other week and everywhere else is dry.
  23. Dumping syndrome does not prevent sugars from being absorbed/weight gain. It's a physical response that causes cramping but it doesn't stop absorption entirely. Supposedly, if you don't drink or eat too quickly while eating things with sugar you are less likely to dump because the food shouldn't be forced into the intestines too quickly. However, with the pyloric valve missing I am not sure it would be possible to manage dumping syndrome effectively.
  24. My father is one of those success stories. He had RNY about 5 years ago. He had type 2 diabetes (and was taking tons of insulin via a pump), high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. Today he takes NO medication! All of his comorbidities are GONE. Not saying this happens to everyone but I have personally seen it happen.
  25. I am pretty sure I will be cleared for veggies and salad at my 3 month follow up appointment. When I get hungry I drink a protein drink like Isopure or Atkins Lift.
