    Hi All,
This is my first post. My surgery date is December 21. I was going the insurance route but the hoops I had to jump through were endless and I really wanted to get this done this year, so I am self paying with a different surgeon and hospital. I am both excited and scared. This is the biggest commitment I have made to my health in decades.

I’m scheduled December 19th so I’ll only have to miss one day of work. I’m nervous but I’m thankful. It’s been a long road to where I am and I cannot wait to start my new journey healthier and happier for the new year.

Congratulations on the 21 pounds that you lost pre-op.
Weight loss post-op will vary by several factors such as type of surgery, and how heavy you were originally prior to surgery.
I had RNY gastric bypass, I lost my weight quickly. I leveled off after about 7 months. Many sleeve patients lose weight at a slower pace but get to the same level of weight loss after 2 years. So the rate of weight loss is a little like mixing apples and oranges between the two procedures.
Also the amount of weight loss will vary by your initial weight. A person in the 400 pound initial range will drop significantly more weight than someone starting at around 200 pounds.
The three most important elements after weight loss surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved through meal volume control.
After my gastric bypass surgery, I was restricted to 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount [3 meals per day] of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore I had to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.
I understand that the surgeon's directions on some programs will vary from one doctor to another. But I wonder if the post-op program that you are following might be in part the cause of your slow weight loss. You are eating FIVE MEALS a day. You are consuming 1200 calories a day. [At 8 weeks into the program, I was consuming about half of that amount or less.]
When I look over the directions for patients with gastric sleeve from my surgeon, it reads:
Three 2 ounce full liquid meals for the first four weeks.
Drink 64-80 ounces of Water or low calorie liquids daily.
75-90 grams of protein is required following surgery.
Off hand I think you are consuming too many calories per day even with your extensive exercise program. When I was young, I decided to lose some weight by upping my exercise routine. Over a few weeks I built myself up to 10 miles of walking per day. But instead of losing weight I gained weight. I was replacing my fat cells with muscles and muscles weigh more.

Aran1030 reacted to Meryline in A success (6 month check up at 7 months) w/pictures
So I had my 6 months check up at the hospital on Thursday, 1 day before 7 months.
I saw my surgeon who could not be more thrilled with me. I have lost 82% of my excess weight. (which is a little strange as I have lost 91% of what will give me a normal BMI) They don't want me to loose too much more weight as I'll start to look sickly. They don't think I'll need any plastics, as I don't have an over hang and my blood results are great (the doctor at my support group will probably disagree. All my values are within range, but some are in the lower end, and since she is a specialist on supplements for bariatrics, she prefers us in the upper range). They also have a score that they calculate, that I don't remember, but it was very high, and she called me a success case. I don't go back until my 1 year check up. (I'll just have blood drawn in 3 months and show my support group doctor)
They were actually fully booked for the BIA test, but the surgeon wanted med to have one, so she called and asked if they could fit me in, and they could. They are done by the nutritionist.
She was also very impressed when she saw me, and after the test she could not be happier. I have the values for all 3 tests (1 month pre op, 6 weeks post op and 7 months post op) I managed to gain another 4 lbs before starting my pre op diet, so it wasn't at my very highest.
The only negative thing was my phase angle. It has dropped. It's a measurement that shows how well your muscles are getting nutrition. That along with my total Protein (from the blood test) she wants me to eat more, and get more protein. Other than that, everything was great and she was so impressed, especially how much muscles I still have. All the working out and walking has helped tremendously.
I have included pictures from about 6 months and 7 months post up. It's only like 5 lbs between the pictures, but I see several changes.

I am a full time student at msu and I had surgery July 25th. Last fall I struggled to fit in the desks. I had such bad anxiety that I'd have to sit in the back of class, get my seat before the other students came in, and would leave after everyone else. My stomach would press against the desk and hurt. Well I started classes again yesterday and guess what? I fit in the desks no problem, sat in the front of the class and had no anxiety. I had enough space to cross my legs under the desk even. just wanted to share this NSV. The scale hasn't moved much the last 2 weeks but this NSV just brightened my week and kept me going below are my pictures. The top ones are from April and the bottom is last week

I personally think the 65% is only if you rely on your sleeve and not put in the work. If you work out and use the sleeve as a tool I have seen many people lose way more than just 65%. I personally am 9 months post op VSG and am only 25 lbs from my drs goal of 150. I was 298.6 at my consult 4/11/16 sleeved 11/22/16 and now 175.

There are some people that despite the procedure keep eating poorly. The WLS is not a cure. So the statistics show that.
Long term success and losing more than 65% will come down to the person and their food choices and the activity they add to their life.

Mine will go in next week, and yes I am nervous. My nurse and doctor told me I shouldn't lose a lot of weight before we submit to insurance so I am nervous about that. I keep worrying I should have lost more. Plus, I thought I wasn't going to have surgery until December, but then the insurance company changed from six months to three months requirement and I just found it out last week. I thought I had a lot more time to prepare than I do now, but I would rather have it now than later. I could be in much better place but December! Good luck to you. Keep me posted.

Six months seems like such a long time but with all the nutrition lessons you go through it takes that much time to learn everything, before I knew it my last appointment came pretty quickly and I thought six months was never going to happen. I stuck with the program and now have my surgery date of June 21st, my pre-op is on June 8th and now it seems like forever til I get my surgery done. So now I've said goodbye to alot of foods, added Protein to even my yogurt, amongst other things and I am now enjoying being fat for the last month I will ever have to ever again, so I'm not stressing that my stomach shows through my shirt because I know it's not gonna be long. I took the past six months trying to say goodbye to bad food habits, and learning how to add better ones. I'm still having trouble with soda, and I still hate Water but I'm getting it together and not stressing because six months is over and I only have one month left and I will read bariatric pal forever, sometimes it's a great help and sometimes people ignore you on here which is very rude. Just know that six months goes by so quickly, I was 238 pounds for about ten years and I'm down to 207, but I fluctuate all the time and decided to get some real help. Everyone in my family is against it and won't even go to the surgery with me, thank god for good girlfriend besties, I'm 55 and I am ready I don't care how much pain or the fact that I can never eat as much as I used to I just want my body back, good luck on your journeys I will keep you posted.
