  1. You're a very pretty YOUNG lady and at only 28 I'm pretty sure at your age you might be able to get your weight down by eating sensibly and walking, I am 55 and I have been trying for 10 years to get my weight off. I wish I was 28 again there are so many other ways besides weight loss surgery for you. I don't know your health matters or how long you've been trying to lose but if I was 28 I would try exercise over surgery any day. Good luck with whatever road you take, my daughter loves dance and she dropped at least 80 lbs doing Zumba and she was right about the age you are now when she got serious. Good luck

Uh, weight loss surgery isn't just for old people, you know. Sometimes it's the best option, no matter what your age.

What a silly thing to say?

You're right, age isn't a matter. I don't consider myself old, at 38, and I'm getting it done to prevent health issues. I'm actually surprised to hear someone on this forum say "eat right and exercise". Well, we all know that's true! But hey, a tool to HELP us do that works!!! This is why I won't tell my parents...people feel like they always know what's best for someone else.

I say, let's support and encourage one another for the decisions they've made. Sure, you can share your experience, with however you managed to lose weight, but let the individual make their own decision.

  2. Congrats on the decision! You will do well. I had two miscarriages and two babies delivered. I never thought I had an emotional eating problem until the loss of my first baby. So I wholly understand your pain. But God is good, we have tools to use to put our bodies back where he'd like us to be, healthy!!! I can't have any more babies, but I'm getting the sleeve myself to prevent health issues that'll keep me from my kids and family now. Keep us posted on your journey. We're here to support you. . Happy new year to you too!

  3. "I'm not going to end up like my mother". This pretty much sums up why I'm doing WLS; she's got a long list of problems due to her weight. I don't have any co-morbidities either with a bmi of 41; 38 years old. I know that if I continue I'm risking developments of such and I have very young children too. Congratulations to all of us who are making this decision to be healthy.

  4. After almost two years, I've finally decided, for the third and last time, last month to do this. Since, I've been trying to contain my impatience. I even called to see if they can reschedule me sooner if someone had decided to cancel. But now that I'm about two weeks out from even my first initial consult, I've finally settle down and am waiting as best as I can. Until then, I'm sharing with others my plans and getting support.

  5. A journal is an excellent tool. I keep track of everything in mine. Keeps me honest too.

Many people don't realize that there is actually a uniform standard of care for bariatric patients. Surgery centers that meet this standard are called "centers of excellence". Something people who have not yet had surgery consider when looking for a surgeon.

I often wonder what people who didn't get enough information, instructions or education would do if they did me have internet sites, like this one, to go too. It's very troublesome.

I am going to start a journal. I need to. And I'm extra thankful for all the sleever experiences I can learn from. Thank you all!

I'm pretty sure the center I'm going to is one of the excellent ????

  6. I've told my immediate family that I live with and 4 friends. I'm too ashamed to tell the world. My sister keeps saying I shouldn't be ashamed but I can't help but feel that way. I've been overweight for 27 of my 30 yrs and there were so many times since I became an adult that I could have turned my weight around but didn't. So I feel ashamed for getting to the point I need surgery. I get that not every one feels this way and I commend you for being braver than I. Maybe after surgery and some weight loss I might feel different but at the moment it's on a need to know basis.

No shame honey! Don't dwell on the past...it's a new year! It's going to be a new you! Keep your eyes and heart going forward, because that is the only way we can go! Don't let those negative emotions take hold of your happiness, because it's going to be GREAT!!! :)

  7. What is your insurance? It does sound too good to be true. Usually there are lots of requirements.

Sometimes you have to read the policy to get into the details.

But like others said, it is good to get a regular primary care doctor. Someone who can see you through and after surgery for regular stuff.

    I have Cigna.

I have Cigna too. Here is their medical coverage for bariatric surgery.

  8. They carry those ones you posted up top at a local health food store I frequent and they always have samples available. I've tried the banana (really tasty and banana isn't even a favorite flavor of mine) and the "green" flavored one which was more savory. The texture on them was great too. I'm intrigued with the Apple one and the tumeric. I keep hoping they will be sampling them!

Samples would be great. Although I've heard only good things about it. Just trying to wrap my mind around it not tasting like meat. lol

  9. Yes, my husband made big batches of it in a slow cooker in preparation for diet. He used organic bones and takes up to 90 hours to cook. Bit then I bought these ( see pics). I love them!!! I don't have experience with sweet versions like the ones you show. I only do the savory. For me they are a nice break from shakes. They are a big trend in helping the stomach to recover and rich in nutrients. I keep the powdered ones in my purse. They taste gourmet too, lots of aromatics. Can be pricey but worth it! ????addattachicon.gif ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1482889056.785512.jpg attachicon.gif ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1482889073.311766.jpg

I haven't even thought to make some, but after hearing 90 hours...don't think it's going to happen. Ha!

I'm gonna order some and try them out. I only snapped a pic of what I found. Happened to be sweet. I love savory stuff though. I think I'll try both. This will be a good alternative then, as you've suggested to take a break from shakes. I'm trying to go plant based but am willing to do the bone broths for added Protein.

    Thanks for your input!

  10. Check out this bariatric surgeon's vids

    https://www.youtube.com/user/DrMatthewWeiner/videos

He pushes a high veggie diet. Now, veggies usually aren't on the diet progression until several weeks after surgery, so be sure to follow your surgeon's diet progression plan until you're fully healed and released to a full diet, but I think this guy has some good advice for long-term weight maintenance.

Fellow poster, Msujester, told me about Dr Weiner. I ordered his book A POUND OF CURE on Amazon. It makes total sense to me. I'm currently reading and taking notes, as to what I want to ask the surgeon when I go in. If my surgeon seems okay with it, I'm going to implement changes. If he isn't, I'll follow his orders and then implement once I'm in maintenance or can handle it.

I am a big fan of the plant-based diet approach. The bariatric gospel on the other hand, tends to condemn that but I think it is a very doable thing. In fact, there is a bariatric surgeon on YouTube who has a video called "eat your veggies first" where in he makes the argument that we have always eaten the Protein first, and if we can get in the habit of eating my vegetables for us we will be healthier and be more likely to keep the weight off.

I think in the very beginning, vegetarian diet could be very challenging because the restriction is so significant due to swelling. But I would say 6 to 9 months out, it's quite feasible.

    Absolutely agree with you.
