  1. It was the salt. Bet it's gone now....and yes, day 3 it just gets easier. It did for me. hang in there...and keep posting! You'll be helping out so many others who need encouragement to get through...and get a good laugh through it. Cause we all know...laughter is the best medicine! You can be Dr FluffyChix! How's that for a name?
  2. Now, I couldn't find the exact article/science from this guy, Dr Peyton, but here's a quote from a forum...which leads me to think it's pretty accurate, given the experience I've had with my hip not hurting and my knees finally getting a break! “Every additional pound you carry equals 3 extra pounds of pressure on your hip joint, 4 extra pounds on your knee joint, and about 9 extra pounds on your patella femoral joint (which you use going up and down stairs, standing up, and getting off the toilet).”
  3. I don't, but now I'm intrigued. I'm going to look it up! I do know that building our cores will help significantly for the back and spine. I had hip bursitis...I was told it won't go away even with weight reduction...but I haven't felt that stupid pain for the past few months...so, with my experience, I'm quite sure it's weight reduction!!!
  4. Absolutely!!!! Let's nail it...LOVING ourselves as we are or get to be. Hey, did you know that for every pound you lose, it takes off about 4lbs of pressure off your knees? You will indeed hurt less with the loss. Keep looking forward to more of it!!!

    5 months post sleeve

I am in an unpopular subject...I don't focus on protein (haven't since about 3-4 months post op). I do get my nutrients mainly from plant based foods though. All blood work comes out fine too. I eat plenty in a day, with legumes, grains, and lots of veggies, especially green leafy veggies. You can eat a considerable more of this and feel content knowing you're eating good nutrient food. Just another idea...look in the vegan/vegetarian forums to get some ideas if want. This is not a ploy to have you come over to that side, just another idea of what foods you can introduce and still be successful...and healthy too.
  6. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread!! I FEEL like I look like this, all muscle and fit....but alas, I know it's not true. But, I will learn to embrace and love myself, ALL of myself!!! Even in pics when they clearly show I am not as I feel. haha
  7. There's a source behind your eating or lack of. Try to identify it and you can beat both of these awful habits. It may take a while though, as it took me months to realize mine, unless you already know the culprit. Be mindful of this 180 you just did, because after surgery, many tend to shift from one thing to another, in the form of addictions. And I know you didn't want to hear it, but your stress level is contributing to it as well. I think you've identified one..stress.
  8. You're welcome! Those folks have that miracle metabolism energy gene...hopefully they don't go off the rails, cause then it will pile back on, unfortunately.
  9. @FluffyChix the numbers will vary and should vary as you lose weight. Let’s say that 1000 cal a day should only be working to maintain if you were 4’2” and 80 lbs. I believe that any doc/nut should/will adjust the amounts you should be taking in for maintenance. Or you can figure these numbers out yourself. Here’s a calculator I like to use. It gives you an idea of what should be. Notice I didn’t say it’s 100% accurate...someone will always find something wrong, but it gives the general idea of what your numbers should be based on your age and activity level and your goals. Obviously this doesn’t work for us who have tiny stomachs now, but it can when we get to goal cause we do eat more by then. http://eatmore2weighless.com/weight-loss-calculator/
  10. Hey I’m not a vet but from my nutrition studies (yes, I used to study this) if you’re still eating a 1000 cal a day even at that 2-3 year mark and working out as you described, you will gain weight because your body is not getting enough food/calories. For example, I'm 5’6”. My goal weight is about 150-160 (due to being muscle heavy). I workout about 3-4 times a week. When I get to goal, I should be eating about 2200 calories a day just to maintain. My BMR is 1450. Even that is above the low 1000-1200 cal a day. So gaining weight, one is...not eating enough and two is, back to eating the way you did. Many of the vets who are maintaining and working out eat more as well, for the ones I’ve read. If anyone is still in that 1000 calorie mode and working out and maintaining, well, they must have some miracle working metabolism/energy. Lol Now, this is an unpopular subject but I gained probably half my excess weight from not eating enough food. My doctor always got on to me for not eating!!! Go figure...it’s true. So, now, I make sure I eat. I can’t eat a lot NOW, but I’ll make sure I eat enough when I get to maintenance.

    Bath?

Just one more full day until you can find out. Did your surgeon tell you three weeks? I was cleared for fully submersible activities (bath, swim) when I had a checkup about 2-3 weeks. Will you be having a check up?
  12. I don’t think anyone here in this thread thinks this. It’s preference and lifestyle we choose just as all others choose theirs.

    Hummus

Hummus...mmm, a favorite! Snap peas, cauliflower, carrots, broccoli, and even pita chips. I’m also almost 9mo out.
  14. Ay yi yi..,I did not know he ate meat either. His gaining weight back has everything to do with not living a sustainable healthy lifestyle. And we all know the healthiest one is a plant based one. 😉

NuGo Slim - Vegan Protein Bars

I haven’t gotten in to eating bars really. I’d say I’d like to try them but I know I probably won’t buy any. Lol. But this is a great reference for me to come back to in case I get stuck having to eat bars for some reason! I’m glad you found some to work with ya. Now...enjoy eating them very slowly on your pre-op!!!! Lol. It gets easier after the first few days, I promise. 😉
  16. Thanks for sharing! I think I’ll go ahead and make some of these soon. Sounds yummy.

    Cigna open access plus

I’m in Texas too and have the same insurance. I was a gold star candidate as well. Mine was submitted and approved less than a day. 😊 my advice, stay on top of your team. Ask them when they’ll submit the paperwork. Then call cigna and ask if they’ve received it and if there’s a status they can give you. I think that’s what made my approval go so quick. Don’t worry hon, it should be fine for you too. oh, and I didn’t gain nor lose until I was stuck on a two week pre-op. Lol. Then I lost like five pounds. Cigna goes by your starting weight anyhow, so you should be in the clear. Another thing... take a deep breath! Now breathe.......😁

    New Documentary! The Game Changers

I will definitely be watching! Thanks for sharing this.
  20. I know this was mentioned before here in the Vegans/Vegetarians forums and I wanted to maybe start this thread for all things pertaining to the book that Dr. Garth Davis authored, Proteinaholic. So far I'm on chapter 6 of it and I'm just amazed with how sound it is and all the studies that are out there to support why we don't need such a high amount of protein, and why it's a culprit of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.... There's just so much to talk about if anyone wants to get into discussion. Now, this thread IS NOT going to be for debate. I do not want anyone coming on here advocating high protein and what they "know" and debating with any of us who are or evolving into plant based, vegans or vegetarians. I want to share the things I've learned from the book and if anyone wants to challenge those, READ THE BOOK FIRST, and then you can come and talk about it. If you don't or haven't read the book, feel free to read the things that will be posted...and do your own homework to find these facts/truths out for yourself. I literally don't have time to do a protein ping pong match...so don't start one. You will be ignored. Okay, with that said and out of the way, the first thing I want to mention is that Dr. Davis actually dispels the myths about protein and why our bodies don't need so much. It is not an opinionated book, it's a science/fact book. It makes TOTAL sense. He is quite comical too. The parts where he plays out his doctor/patient dialogues hit me the most...because I can relate to how I was educated about protein being what we all need. I had the same mentalities as he did regarding it, but after I started watching documentaries on plant based diets for the past couple of years, I've slowly become open to all the health benefits of eating plant based. But now, even though I knew plant based is great for the health, I didn't know that the protein component was/is what was causing so many problems in my health, my husband's, etc. Now, I've got science and truth to understand the premise of protein. The history of why, what Dr Davis talks about, we western society pick apart whole foods and live based off of macronutrients. Now, it just boggles me why we do that. The other thing that rings true and is nice knowing, is that he is a bariatric surgeon too. He knows what he's coaching/telling his patients. He knows that he was not a nutritionist, didn't know a single thing, but the one hour of nutrition studies in his school days, but he took the time to dive into history, studies, reports, etc to bring light to why western society is so unhealthy, and most of it is based on animal protein. Wow. Read the book!

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I’m thankful for your surgeon too!!!! I was not given a set amount, but “just eat protein first”. I focused on that in the early days as I was getting acquainted with science and how our bodies work with all that extra protein (or doesn’t work). I have erased my mindset of labeling my foods by macro and micro nutrients. I don’t do protein, but beans, kale, etc. yum. Lol. Kale...my favorite! 😍🥗

    Chewable Vitamins

Don't be surprised if your tastes changes and your stomach hates these things throughout your post months. I've gone through so many bariatric brands it's ridiculous; waste of money too. Currently, I'm doing the Flintstones (I'm also over 8 months post) and it seems to be fine to a degree. I was taking pills before but those made me sick (some bariatric brand). I hate bariatric vitamins, so I won't be using them anymore. I'm not worried about lack of vitamins either because I eat a variety of plant based foods, so my blood work is always good. Don't forget your sublingual B12 though. if you find yourself fatigued and dropping stuff...get a B complex as well. Hope you all find what works for you!!! I have a whole bottle of bariatric calcium tablets that I won't bother with...FREE to anyone in CC, TX area who wants them.

    Starting process with Cigna

Oh yes, absolutely, because the 3 months of exercise/nutrition is pretty hard, IMO. Taking the first steps to change what got most everyone there is a mental challenge. I’m over 8months post and I still deal with head hunger, etc. BUT beating those challenges are still all worth it for our health.

    Starting process with Cigna

You’re welcome hon. I had my psych evaluation early on too, I think within the first two weeks of my journey. There will be numerous appointments, but it’s all worth it IMO. Be blessed!

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

He has an easy app to journal those foods. I don’t care for journaling anything and tried it, but obviously I’m not wired to even do that easy app! Lol.
