  1. I'm new to this site and just read your story and I was blown away.Thank you for sharing such a real and intimate story of your journey! When I go to bed at night I try to imagine what it will be like to be thin, but it's hard. Last time I was in "onederland" I was a young teen. Reading the little details such as being able to shop anywhere etc. made me cry. Thank you for being an inspiration and giving me a vision for what the future could hold. And I absolutely want to do a mud run someday!!!! :-D Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

  3. I am pre-op but I have experienced dumping. I had major GI issues a few years back so was tested for food intolerances. My biggest one is soy. If I accidentally ingest soybean oil for example (such as at a restaurant since they seem to all cook with it cuz it's cheap), I get a strong reaction: I get flushed and sweaty and nauseated, with splotchy red Patches on my neck and chest and my heart races and I feel shaky and sick. In about 45 minutes, I get intestinal cramps and diarrhea. Whenever the body is faced with something it can't process, it tries to "dump" it out as quickly as possible. 4. (Oops: rest of my post here) ...by a personal trainer who had me do too many squats too soon. I could not walk for 4 days. I was in agony and my husband had to lift me up out of a chair or couch because I literally could not. Also, depends on whether you had open surgery or laparoscopic. I've had both kinds -- definitely need to wait much longer for strenuous exercise like squats when all your abdominal muscles have been sliced thru, LOL Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  5. I almost snorted my Water when I read that, LOL. I beg to differ a bit if I may -- squats are a compound exercise, they use several major muscle groups at once. And even if you do just body weight squats without a barbell, they can still be strenuous depending on your weight and fitness level. For example, a 300-lbs woman doing squats is like a 150-lbs woman doing squats with a 150-lbs barbell. And since every pound of weight is 4 pounds of pressure on your joints...that can be a lot of strain on your knees (again: depending on your current weight). Personally, I was injured really badly a few months ago by a personal trainer who. A Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

  8. I've faced that too. For a while, I kept my diary private. Also, I got more relaxed when I only tried to balance out the week, not each day. Btw, one time I had what I thought was a HUGE embarrassing binge. I forced myself to log it...and was shocked that I had actually eaten far fewer calories than I feared Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  9. I'm on a 6-month supervised weight loss prior to surgery. I was told that my insurance requires 35+ BMI and that if I start to los e too much, then my dietitian will switch me to a maintenance diet so I don't dip below 35 BMI Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

This is Us -- possible spoilers

I just LOVE that show! I was watching it last Tuesday with my father-in-law (who I had just told earlier that day that I planned to get a bypass). When Kate announced at the end that she decided to get a bypass, we looked at each other with dropped jaws!! LOL I hope they do a good job of portraying the whole process. More people need to learn about WLS. I never considered WLS or even knew much about it until I got hooked watching the BBC show "Fat Doctor" on YouTube. I have now watched so many bypass surgeries that I am not the least bit squeamish about getting one, LOL. By the time I watched all six seasons, I had decided to get WLS. 13. Oh wow, I just noticed after my post on tracking that I came right after @@Vinasu talking about tracking, LOL. (*high five to Vinasu*) Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  14. @@JaneDarcy, I struggled like you. Here is what worked for me: tracking. I started tracking my food/water/exercise on the myfitnesspal website. For me, "eating right" was too fuzzy... I didn't succeed until I tracked. I started just tracking carbs. Then I added a Protein goal. Then worked on fat/carb/protein and calories. Then I got a FitBit and started tracking my steps. Start small and build up, step by step. Maybe you gave up by lunch/dinner because you ate too little (and not enough protein/fat) for breakfast. When you eat enough protein/fat and limit carbs, you can reduce calories and lose weight WITHOUT being hungry. Tracking helped me SO much. If I screwed up on lunch, all was not lost -- I could still use my dinner and afternoon snack to get my calories/protein/carbs back in balance for the day. If I screwed up on all of Monday, all was not lost -- I had 6 more days to have the correct average of daily calorie goal. And the best part of myfitnesspal was the support -- every time I completed my food diary, my friends would like it and post encouraging messages on my wall. Every time I got discouraged, my friends would cheer me up. And it became addicting and fun to try and beat my goals with my FitBit. If I noticed late at night that I was only a few hundred steps short of my goal, I would pace the living room to get those last steps so that my FitBit would buzz in notification and congratulations of my victory, and I would go to bed feeling proud of myself. So.... that is how I broke most of my bad habits. Tracking! :-) Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    General Question!

Hi funke, I haven't had my bypass yet but I had 3 other (non-bariatric) major abdominal surgeries (one open and two laparoscopic) -- I am very shocked that you are running 5 miles only 6 weeks after surgery. Are you 100% sure that your surgeon has released you to do that vigorous of exercise? Running jars your insides sharply each time your weight lands on a foot. You don't want to rip any stitches or staples. It's entirely possible that you are stressing your body so much that it is in a panicked-starvation-mode hanging on to the safety net of fat for dear life. Have you considered dialing back your exercise to gentle walking 5 days a week and focusing on getting good nutrition? Are you getting the amount of Protein per day that your doctor wants? Also, a plateau at 3 weeks post is common, so I hear. Our body manages our weight by defending a "set point" -- as we lose we periodically hit "plateaus" as our body adapts to a new set point. Hang in there -- I'm sure that you will lose again soon! :-). Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  16. Hi all, I will be getting a RNY bypass, but first I have to do 6 months of medically-supervised weight loss. My dietician has put me on a high-protein/low-carb diet. I have to get at least 100 grams Protein every day, but must eat fewer carbs than protein (so less than 100 g carbs/day). So the net result of that is my calories dropped from about 2500/day to about 1400/day and Fiber went from 25g average to maybe 10g average. I'm so constipated! I'm taking MiriLax and eating 3 prunes every morning but it hasn't helped much. Will my body adjust? And how the heck will I get enough fiber post-op? :-/ Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Constipation question

Well I'm quite concerned now that constipation will be an ongoing struggle after my surgery, LOL. It won't deter me, though. Guess I had better find out a good strategy now. I had HORRIBLE constipation after my 3rd abdominal surgery. I was in agony and had to take very drastic action. I don't want to repeat that, so I'll take my colace etc but I also need to prevent constipation daily for the rest of my life. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Constipation question

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I can't use wheat bran because I'm intolerant to gluten, but I hope that adding a fiber supplement like Metamucil to my Protein shake will help. I'm worried about taking MiriLax every day forever -- the bottle says to not use it long-term. I need to add walking, that's a good idea. This high-fiber/low-carb/low-fiber diet coincided with getting really sick (flu then migraine, now a cold) so I haven't been exercising. I do drink lots of Water -- at least 7-9 glasses a day (plus 12-24 oz almond milk in Protein shakes and herbal tea). I don't like prune juice (so sweet, ugh) but it is effective so maybe I will have to start using it. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  19. I am pre-op and currently doing 6 months of medically-supervised weight loss before my gastric bypass. I stuck to my high-protein/low-carb diet at Thanksgiving. I majored on the turkey and veggies and just had a few bites of the carb options. I weighted myself this morning and I was down 5 pounds since 1.5 weeks ago -- first time Ive lost weight over Thanksgiving! I enjoyed focusing on family rather than food. Hi QueenBx, congrats on getting your date! I have to do 6 months of medically-supervised weight loss first, so my surgery isn't until May/June of 2017. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
