    First period post-op

It's funny, but after I posted this, I started a "normal" period during the day. It was weird that I spotted for almost 5 days!

    Port Incision

It was put together with glue I think... It doesn't stink, radiate or anything else... it's still sore and is red though. And a TINY bit of oozing.
  3. I find that I can drink things really quickly now. Especially Soup broth. I just drank about 6 oz in about 15 minutes (a coffee mug.) I need to watch and measure and make sure I only take 4 from now on. Am I damaging my pouch? I feel fine! I can't seem to do the same with other drinks, but I don't always remember to take small sips. I never asked the doctor about restriction, but am guessing I have none. I am definitely losing weight and feel good... I just don't want to stretch it out and end up not losing well. Thanks!!!
  4. I have been hitting up my local Safeway for the chicken noodle Soup from their deli. I scoop it very carefully so I can avoid anything chunky. It's mmmmm gooooood! Anyway, I realized today they have these little one ounce sampling cups. So I sampled a little of each soup (the broth of the Italian Wedding Soup, the Tomato bisque and the NW Clam Chowder.) It was a meal! Try it!!!

    I'm the burpy monster!

I'm burping a lot on liquids. After I drink sometimes I will have 5-10 little bitty burps. Often they are almost silent. Just releasing the air. I'm just happy I'm not farting up a storm like my poor friend who had gastric bypass. You have to flee the house when she passes gas and it's frequent!
  6. I am supposed to be on liquids for three weeks. This was day 10. The last few days I have been very sick with diarrhea and today started to feel very sick, weak and dehydrated. I called the dr's office and the dietician said a lot of people react to the artificial sweeteners in the drinks and having such a concentrated amount can cause the diarrhea. She suggested that I drink only soy milk, Water and chicken broth. Something about the sound of that was just horrible. Two weeks seemed unbearable. She said even if I had soy milk 10x a day it would be fine (that's about 1500 calories.) She said make sure the diarrhea cleared up and call tomorrow. I went to the store to go get more soy milk and ended up getting some of the hot chicken Soup. I got all the stuff out, only the broth, and ate it. I feel SO much better. I got home and had some tomato soup that I had in the cupboard. I understand I should follow doctors orders... but I don't think I can do 2 weeks of nothing but soy milk!! Maybe she didn't intend for that to be the whole two weeks (she said check in tomorrow) but every Protein drink I try makes me sick. I have a bad aversion (intolerance or allergy?) to dairy and it makes me feel terrible. The only drink I have found that doesn't make me 1) have diarrhea or  break out is a vegan drink that tastes like chalk and cardboard mixed in a blender. (BTW, I have opted for the skin over the stomach before, but now not only have diarrhea but very itchy, red, broken out skin!) I just had to make a confession. It seems a lot of people are on mushies at this point in their program. I don't think soup that's been strained should be too bad for me... likewise, I think I should be able to have an all-natural juice. I know there are sugar and calories in that, but soy milk has like 14-17 grams of sugar in it so what's the difference?? It also only has about 4 grams of protein, and an odwalla juice has 3 grams of protein... Anyway, maybe I am justifying something I shouldn't? Maybe I should do the soy milk for the rest of this diet? I don't know. I just know I feel a lot better with some chicken soup in my body.

    Diarrhea

I am getting worried. I took milk of magnesia on Sunday night and have had diarrhea since. It's not a lot (since I am hardly drinking anything) but I am getting worried. My lips are chapped now (dehydration) and I don't know what to do.

    Cravings

I am on day eight of the post-surgery liquid diet (I have to do it for 15 more days!) I need to be on liquids until my post op diet and it's already starting to feel too long. Today was the first day I started craving food. I was walking down the street and restaurants were smelling good... my neighbors in my apartment building are cooking cinnamon rolls and they smell good! I was visiting someone's house for a bit and they were cooking dinner and it smelled good! last week it didn't bother me if people ate around me. Now just the smell of food is making me drool! I drank another Protein shake and am going to BED early to watch a movie and get my mind off--though the cinnamon roll smell is wafting into my bedroom. I wish they were cooking fish tonight instead! My whole drive home I kept thinking about clam chowder or cream of mushroom Soup. I can only have broth right now. What do you do about cravings???? I hope this isn't a sign of something to come?
  9. Today was my first day at work, and I was sitting in meetings most of the day. I started getting a bad pain on my back by my right shoulder. I know a lot of people mentioned shoulder pain right after surgery, but I didn't have it then. I am wondering if this is gas pain, or if it's from sitting so much more than I was used to in a day? I think I should add that I have been walking around and pretty active since my surgery. I have taken walks and gone shopping and all kinds of things. Today was definitely a pretty sedentary day. I got home at 4:30 and went to sleep! I woke up at 7:30 pm and the pain is still there. Now of course I have to rest, and do this again tomorrow, only my day will be from 7:00 am -6 pm!!
  10. My doctor recommended Milk of Magnesia for constipation. It's a full week after my surgery and no BM yet. Today I started feeling like I have to "go" but have not and really want to avoid the pain of cramping if I do start to cramp. As of now I just have that sort of feeling, but no go. I am a little scared to take the M of M... did anyone take it for this? I have never had it before and do NOT want diarrhea or cramping! I am only going to take 2 tbs which is the minimum dose... thanks!

    Isopure

I went to GNC today and got some Isopure (the green one and the orange one- peach mango.) I sipped the peach mango and it was not good but it was also room temp. I heard people saying they mix in crystal light. Do you just pour in the crystal light and mix it with the Isopure, or do you Water the Isopure down w/ crystal light and water and have half a serving? I start working again tomorrow and want to have the easiest way to get my Protein as possible. If I can figure a way to DRINK this, I think it will be so much simpler than mixing shakes at work. Thanks!! Also, this is strange and totally off topic... I took a nap today and weighed myself and I lost 5 lbs! I had not lost weight when I woke up this morning. Weird, huh?

    Guilty!

I had surgery on 8/18. I also have been hungry but have not eaten any food. I'm worried about a) stretching my pouch, and damaging the band. I think you need to drink more Protein if you get hungry again. And if you live alone, get rid of the food in your house. You could really do some damage to your body if you continue to eat! I would also talk to your doctor tomorrow. I have been VERY hungry, but despite that, it's important to continue to drink only liquids. I find that if I drink more protein, I can keep from starving.
  13. You can buy sugar free/fat free but only in a box. You can mix it with milk.
  14. Right now I am on liquid Proteins only. The shake I am drinking is 100 calories per serving, 20 grams of Protein, 5 carbs. I drink it 3x a day. I was told not to take in any other drinks with calories. This is only 300 calories a DAY!!! Starting next week I need the energy to teach first grade (lots of activity!!!) This last week (surgery was on Monday) I was very lethargic and slept a lot. I have not lost any weight. I am really worried that on 300 calories I will not have the energy to last the day at work. I feel ok generally, but think I should be getting at least 800 calories a day. The doctor said I should be getting 800-1000 calories a day on the band, but right now with only the shakes, I am not getting anywhere near that. I have lactose intolerance and dairy allergies so it was hard to find a shake I could drink. This has been the only one that makes me feel ok. I want to add Odwalla Superfood, Soy Protein or their other drinks to my diet. They have about 150 calories. I think if I drank 3 of these a day instead of (or with) Water or crystal light I would feel a lot better. Any thoughts????
  15. My doctor said wait THREE MONTHS... I imagine alcohol will be painful on the pouch. I wouldn't do it!
  16. I'm 31 and I would say it's so-so. I was banded on Monday 8/18 and feel pretty good but have a lot of soreness in my port area and my lower belly incision. I never felt any shoulder pain. However, today I took a walk around my neighborhood and was in a TON of pain around my port! My shirt also sort of rubbed against it though. I have to go back to work on Monday and am a bit worried. I'm glad it's been so easy for you! I was so bloated, today was the first day I noticed the scale went down at all. I am still weighing more than I did before surgery!

    How much protein?

I was told 60-80 grams per day. I have a very hard time getting it all in! The drinks I like are 20 grams, but I can only drink half at a time, so I am drinking shakes 6 times a day! It's difficult but you have to do it!

    Nausea

I have had nausea all day. Since my afternoon shake anyway. I wonder if I did something wrong? It was thicker than I thought it should be so I added more soy milk to it. The doctor was supposed to have someone on call, but when i call the office the phones aren't forwarded! Any good quick cures for nausea? I don't feel like puking-- just have a heavy, yuck feeling in my stomach. Thanks!

    Nausea

I think I took too big of sips and sucked in air. Later tonight I was burping like crazy! I sipped water very slowly the rest of the night and seemed much better!
  20. I am on day 3 since the surgery. I am feeling great (up and about) and overall the pain is really diminished. I gained weight at the hospital (despite only taking in about 4 oz of Protein shake for the day and 1/2 I was there.) I know it was Water weight from the IV. but now I am home and actually am hungry! I had 2 shakes today and about 29 grams of protein in one (including the soy milk) and 20 grams in another shake (including the soy milk.) I know I need a bit more protein for one dya, but I also don't think I should be hungry. Do I just make another shake, or do I just suffer with some mild hunger? I am drinking water and crystal light. I have only had about 40 oz so far, but I need 24 oz more. It's 8 p.m. here. Would you make another shake or just hold out for tomorrow?

    Gaining Weight and Hunger

I don't think my doc recommended a clear liquid diet after surgery. I went on one before surgery and was already drinking Protein drinks in the hospital. I am just having as many shakes as I can have in a day and getting as much protein as possible. I am still a bit hungry but it's ok! I am dealing with it!

    Shakes??

I'm sure this has been posted already a ton of times... but, I am seriously in trouble when it comes to shakes. I can't have whey so I am stuck with soy Protein. I need 60 grams per day. I found a really healthy shake but it tastes like chalk. I tried an egg-white based shake but it is so frothy I am afraid I will get gas. So now I'm drinking the lactose free slim fast, because that's what I could find. It has tons of carbs. My doc said double the protein to carbs. I'm drinking this one, as I need SOMETHING but know it won't be any good long term. I am hungry and don't know what to do. I already drove to the GNC closest to my house and they had nothing that seemed right for me. The best they had was EAS Protein Shakes. HELP!!

What to wear the day of Surgery???

I was in my clothes for all of 30 minutes before they had me change into a gown. I wore a t-shirt and yoga pants, with converse shoes (no socks.) I brought a hat with me to wear the next day, but didn't end up wearing it as I took a shower at the hospital! It was in case my hair was a disaster after sleeping so much. I wasn't trying to look good, just comfortable. You will hardly wear your clothes and then when you are released you will just be glad to be going home! I did bring PJ's to the hospital and am SO glad that I did. I was so glad to get out of the gown and into my own clothes. Don't wear something you LOVE. I had on an orange t-shirt and after my shower my stitches bled a bit, right onto my shirt. I wish I had know that would happen.
  24. I used Dr. Ross McMahon at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. I like that he is very cautious and does extra stitches and really looks out for safety. I stayed overnight, and a lot of the places don't do that. His dietician and nurses are really nice and helpful.

scared to be thin, but wants to be thin

All my friends are thin, and I am the fat one. I am excited to be able to share clothes, or just go shopping in the same store. I have not been thin ever, but weighed about 135 in HS. I was still bigger (since I am 5'4") but was in the normal range more or less. I did not like guys shouting at me and hitting on me, which happened back then. I don't know how I will deal with that as I get thin. I am only a little afraid, I am more excited, but know I will also need some counseling to get over the issues I do have about weight.
