There was an article in Diabetes Forecast Magazine earlier this year and it did say that Gastric Bypass was the one that reduced blood sugar levels quickest but that all of the surgeries will reduce blood sugar levels as they reduce your weight. I am not sure why, my doctor also said the same. He suggested bypass for based on my diabetes and also GERD but the decision to have bypass was mine.

The bypass procedure has both restriction in Malabsorption Whereas the sleeve primarily has restriction. Because of the Malabsorption portion of the gastric bypass you don’t intake as much calorically & utritionally speaking thus eliminating your diabetes.

Here's a JAMA excerpt. I can't unlock it for the full study. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2601499
I'm going by my surgeon's rec that RNY is more effective at potentially reversing T2. Of cource, it's possible for DFU errors (user errors ) and you could potentially re-eat your way back into your disease.

I just had mine last Friday. They gave me something in an IV. I remember the Dr coming in the room and asking me how I was today and then I woke up in recovery.
I have all of my tests done and they are submitting to my insurance at the end of the week and then I have to wait up to 30 days for Blue Cross. The waiting sucks.

    Hi everyone,
First post here, please bear with my stupid question.
I've been thinking about RNY more and more over the past few months and came across BariatricPal. Soooo happy I found this place because the forums have answered more questions than I've managed to ever find online all this time!
The main reason I've decided on RNY is my diabetes. I was diagnosed with type 2 since I was 14 (currently 38 in a month) and I am sick and tired of feeling sick and tired all my life. I have never been able to stabilize my sugar levels or bring them down to a normal level.
RNY is proven to lower these levels, as I'm sure you all know. BUT they won't do the surgery unless your levels are low. While I get that you have to generally have low sugar levels for any type of surgery, how is this not a catch 22?
I finally had the cohones to tell my doctor about me wanting RNY and she was completely against it (old school). I changed family doctors and the new one is onboard with me doing this if I bring my sugar levels down. He started me on insulin since I haven't seen results with all the meds and now my sugar levels are skyrocketing!
    Any help is appreciated guys!

I love that you are working on coping skills because you will need them. This surgery is big time change, it is hard work. I get upset when I hear that people call this the easy way out. I call Bull**** on that.
I had two weeks of liquid only diet. Then had surgery and was on Clear liquids for a whole 7 days. I felt tired and weak and worse yet brain dead. I remember my husband and I working on our bills. I always wrote the checks and balanced the checkbook and then he would do the rest. Well during that month (2 weeks before and 2 weeks post op), I could not even think straight and screwed up writing the checks and even balancing the check book. I was so weak and brain dead. I remember my husband getting really frustrated with me because he really didn't get it.
Then, I popped off and told him if he didn't shut up his griping I was going to take food away from him for a month and he could see how his brain functioned. LOL
Well, twice now he has tried using a Bariatric liquid diet to get started losing weight and both times he could not make it through day 1.
Now, I think he gets it.
In terms of things to do to keep your mind off of it. Take one hour at a time, stay focused on all the reasons you are doing this in the first place. Then, be good to yourself. I used my bathtub, a good book and my headphones with some relaxing music almost everyday.
Then when I thought I could not do it for one more minute I went to bed and slept. When I would wake up, I would take a whole new look at on and refocus on my goals.
I was proud of myself that I never cheated, not even once. I lost 14lbs in the 2 weeks prior to surgery. Of course I gained it all back in the hospital but that was just Water weight from all the IV fluids they pump into you. That goes away after a week or two and then the weight starts coming off consistently,.
You will do great! Just keep your eye on that prize. 7lbs is not a lot given the clear liquid diet they have you on. You should see that easily.

I have heard that, and my response was "Yeah! Why should I continue to struggle and fail the same as I have for the last 20 years, when I can take decisive action and perhaps save my life. So, sure, the easy way out is just right for me!"

I have mine on Tuesday afternoon so I'll let you know.
I don't think mine is going to be as extensive as what the other two were saying. When I made the appointment I asked how long I should expect to be there so I would know if I should take the day off work and she said it's usually 45 min and 1/2 hour with the doctor I took 1/2 day off anyway.
