Aside from valid medical conditions, I'm pretty sure every person who is obese has an eating disorder. Or they wouldn't be obese right?! Also isn't the reason we are doing this to have some long term success?? I mean, if there is no restriction a year or so out I might as well just go on another fad diet to loose the weight like I have so many times before. I understand you are able to consume more, but the idea is it should never be like before. I choose the surgery for the long term success rates personally. And yes, I'm seeing a bariatric counselor to help with the eating disorder portion which I think is definitely in order for OP too. Personally I would never risk the complications if I was already at a healthy weight, but I do understand your battle. Best of luck to you!

What you do not seem to understand is that restriction is really temporary. The first 6 months you have a lot of it. The further out you get, the more you can eat, and the few things that cause restriction. When I was 5 months a Protein bar would have me stuff, at one year they are a slider.
Restriction is temporary. It will not save you from binge eating.

You asked for our perspectives, now I encourage you to really listen to their responses. Many people with binge eating disorders have found a way to continue bingeing, and based on your history, I'm thinking you may, as well.

I am concerned that if this is a true post, that you are looking for a short term solution to a long term problem.
Sleeve may work for you in the first 4-5 months, you will be forced to eat less, have bad reflux if you eat wrong foods, or keep throwing up.
Then stomach heals, and as was mentioned before, you can binge on any food, and you will Gain weight back!
Really, you need lot of counselling and even OA - Overeaters Anonymous.
The binge eating needs to be under control Before the sleeve.
Otherwise, surgery will be for nothing, and you could possibly damage your sleeve, spend all this money, be sick, re-gain weight and have life-long complications.
Sleeve is Not a magic wand!

I'm sure there are many people that were able to get psychological clearance and still get surgery. I saw my wife struggle with binge eating/bulimia and the Lap-band for years. She often ate to the point of severe discomfort and often complained of pain from bingeing way beyond her comfort zone (almost every single night) She threw up frequently. On several occasions, she admitted to me that she liked the feeling of being empty (hence the bulimia). I like the feeling of being full. I'm sure we have our own experiences that shaped us to feel a certain way. She did lose about 80# and has kept off about 70#, give or take. I believe she is in "remission" with her eating disorder (if there even is such a thing), but it does flare up now and again, often during periods of high stress.
If the sleeve could completely prevent you from bingeing, I would say "go for it", but it can't. I totally believe you about how detrimental it has been to you. Have you tried some type of eating disorder clinic? I feel they would have the best understanding of various eating disorders and how to treat them. I worry that for you, especially since it appears you do not have weight to lose (based upon your BMI), that it wouldn't serve you ghe way you need /want it too. I strongly encourage you to seek some emotional support for your binge eating disorder, whether or not you decide to proceed with the surgery. You're not "CRAZY", as you mentioned, but you do need help, and in my humble opinion, it's not surgery. Best of luck to you on your journey towards healing yourself.

The sleeve won't stop you from binge eating.
You will just learn to eat around your sleeve.
At one year out, I could binge eat if I wanted to. Like I could eat a whole box of Cookies, a ton of ice cream, milk shakes. The sleeve won't stop you from binge eating, not long term.
Really not even short term. You could still try to binge eat early on, and really hurt yourself.
The sleeve will not help you, period.

I think you've received a lot of good advice here. I'm super early on, just scheduled to see the Bariatric Surgeon for a consult in 2 days.
I hope you don't feel any judgment by the feedback you've had from the group; I think it's some seriously valuable honesty. Valuable for all of us going through this!!
Good luck and I'm interested in hearing what you decide to do!!

I can understand that it sounds horrible to only be able to eat a few bites of the foods you love. It really is awesome though because after you have adjusted to the sleeve, you will only really want a few bites, you will enjoy those few bites, and then you won't think about eating anymore because you'll be thinking about something other than food.
I love cake...I can have a few bites and then I am more than happy. I love ice cream...I can have way too much of that and then I get sick. In the end, I rarely eat either of them because I like being thin and since I know that I can have them if I want to, I don't feel any real urge to eat them. At three years out, I have no idea what my stomach capacity is because I haven't measured things for years. I do know though that when I look at chicken sandwich (think Chik Fil A grilled chicken) I can eat about half over the course of an hour, and I feel fine. I cannot eat more than a bite or two in a few minutes because my stomach pukes it right back out. I also generally put food I'm going to eat at home into a separate container, so if I have goldfish crackers, I scoop 1/2 cup into a paper bowl and then I munch on those for a little while.
If you are successful in your surgery, you won't care that you can't eat a lot of food and you'll be completely content eating small amounts. You'll also have made it a habit to only eat small amounts so you won't really notice that you don't eat as much. At three years post-op, my days are filled with worrying about deadlines for work and grad school, and rarely do I think a lot about what I am eating. I weigh myself everyday and if I see the scale go up a pound or two, I pay a little more attention to my food the next day or so and I go back to normal. A few years from now, the fact that you can't eat a lot of watermelon will be the last thing on your mind.

LOL. There's going to come a time where you WISH you could only eat a few spoonfuls of food or a couple cubes of watermelon. And early out, you actually will be satisfied with that small amount of food.
That "couple of spoonfuls" literally only lasts for a month or so. The natural progression of things is to be able to eat more as time goes on, and it's not due to stretching. It's due to healing and things relaxing a bit in your stomach.
At 2 years out, depending on what it is, I can eat up to 5 Oz of Protein and up to a cup of food. And yes, I have put on weight even with those portions. That's why further out it's not about sleeve capacity at all. It's more about WHAT we're eating.
I suggest you stop focusing on what you aren't going to be able to eat and focus more on the reasons why you need this surgery in the first place. It's normal to "grieve" and worry about food more or less at first, but try to understand that to make this surgery successful, eating for pleasure shouldn't be front and center anymore. Otherwise you'll find yourself eating around the sleeve and defeating the purpose of the whole thing
