Lori Orr got a reaction from greycurls in Help! My Family Is Against My Weight Loss Surgery!
This hits home because just last Saturday, my daughter cried and begged me not to make a decision now. She thinks we can try again with mainstream weight loss endeavors...while I see her point, I know what I've been through over the years. She is so afraid I'm going to die, either on the table or from a post-op complication, she refuses to listen anymore.
This makes me sad because I told her I'd try again for her. But in reality, now I'm pushing ahead with plans of the surgery behind her back. She doesn't realize that in a year, she will be moving out. I'm alone and I want to move forward with my life. I've already made huge changes and my weight is the last thing holding me back. I'm 42 years old. I WANT TO LIVE!
I realize dieting with her will help. But I know where my weight plateau will be--it will be still considerably overweight, but will put me low enough that I will not be accepted for this surgery. I didn't come to this decision lightly and have been researching for two years! Now that I've made the decision to do it, I don't think a lack of support will hold me back. I'll just have to work harder to prove that the decision I made was the right one for me and that it will have a happy ending.

Congratulations on your surgery, and welcome to the group.
I'm also new here and just learning, so I don't have an answer. Just wanted to say Hello!

Lori Orr got a reaction from katclose in Anyone used Drs. Valenzuela or Cabrera with Mexico Bariatric? How about Dr. Kelly, also in Mexico?
I was denied by the surgeon of my choice, but my case was accepted by the three doctors listed above.
Was wondering if anyone here used one of them and if so, how do you feel they did with your particular case? Was the surgeon and staff friendly and helpful? Was the surgeon, in your opinion, attentive to your needs/fears and were they forthcoming when you had questions? How did your actual procedure go? Were you happy with the outcome? Complications? How are you doing post op in your daily life?
Dr. Valenzuela charges $5495, while Dr. Cabrera charges $4995. These quotes are all inclusive from San Diego back to San Diego.
I haven't received a quote from Dr. Kelly, but so far, I prefer his Coordinator...
Any info would be so greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for this word of warning. I already got that feeling from the staff there, and wasn't feeling like I was going to choose her. I am happy I got some confirmation.
Since my last post, I was contacted by a coordinator from Dr. Illan. I was extremely impressed with their attention to detail and how friendly and informative he was. I will be in contact with him again soon. I will let you know if I end up choosing this doctor. I am finally getting excited!

Did they make you take a support person? I've asked two different people if it was required and they both ignore the question!
If I'm able to go by myself, I feel strongly that at 4 days post op I can walk from the car, check in at San Diego airport, fly to Sacramento, and walk to the car of the person who's picking me up. I'm a tough lady! I've been through 3 C-sections, a Tummy Tuck and gallbladder removal. However, this is one thing I've never done, so any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'd be willing to join a support group as well. Like many others, I'm not telling anyone besides my mom and daughter. Nobody else knows and I'd like to keep it that way!

I wish your wife the best. It's sad we have to find ways to beat the system, often to our own detriment. She's gonna get there. Tell her to keep her chin up.

My wife's in the same boat you are. She has had to wait to get hers until the summer (she's a teacher) and she has a break with enough time for recovery...she's very jealous of me. But she gained enough to meet the 40 BMI requirement and she's been maintaining at that weight so that when she weighs in at the doctor's office, she has a history of being at 40 BMI. It sucks to have to do, but in this case you have to game the system to get what you need. Insurance companies are the worst.

I feel the same. I was accepted for surgery, but so low a BMI, I'm terrified to lose any weight. I keep eating!
I hope insurance accepts you. If they don't, you can have surgery in Mexico for $4500.

Usually you're given a script. Alot of people like Premier Protein shakes (pre-made). I have to use Bariatric fusion for my pre-op and they're really good - I'm just getting sick of the sweetness quickly. I went to my pre admission testing yesterday and they reviewed what meds I take now and what I need to stop and what to take morning of surgery. Pre-op teaching tomorrow and I was hoping they'd give us our scripts for post-op.
