  1. Hi all, newbie here. I'm due for bypass surgery in september. I was wondering how you dealt with the lead up? Did you have support from friends and family? If not how did you manage that? I've found all friends and family supported the idea but now it's become reality it's been very different. I'm very much on my own and frankly, bricking it [emoji51]

  2. Hi all,
I survived my 2 weeks of Optifast, managing to get in at least 3 and sometimes 4 shakes each day. Those two weeks included a business trip out of town (flights, hotel, conference, etc), 2 birthday parties (one of them was mine!) and Father’s Day. I was really proud of myself for sticking to the plan. Then came the two Water and sf Jello days. Then June 21 was surgery day. Was at the hospital at 6 am and gastric bypass was on schedule at 8 am. I vaguely recall waking up in the PACU, asking for more pain meds, and that was it. Then I was in my semi-private room in the hospital for two nights. I got myself a Fitbit for my bday and made it my goal to get 250 steps every hour in the hospital, so I was that patient wheeling my IV pole around the hospital halls, starting at 1 pm on the day of my surgery and going every hour until 11 pm and starting again in the mornings. That first day was the most uncomfortable in terms of gas pains and very dry mouth. I wasn’t allowed to drink anything that first day. I could just swish Water around and spit it out. Saturday I was allowed water, sf Jello, sickly sweet juices, and tea and had to record every tablespoon I drank every hour. Sunday, I started passing gas (apparently a big milestone!!), was taken off IV, and was discharged. The pain was very manageable and I was told this is because I was so determined to walk a little bit so frequently.
I’ve been home now for a week and a half. I’ve been on ‘full liquids’ (protein shakes, milk, sf yogurt, sf pudding, cream Soups, broth Soups, and runny oatmeal), and been doing great. I’ve been getting all my Protein and my water in without any issues. I’ve also been getting out for walks and getting 8000+ steps in each day. I’m planning on going back to work tomorrow. My plan has me starting soft solids on Saturday so we’ll see how that goes!
I have to say that my recovery has gone very smoothly so far. I’m sending all my June surgery siblings positive vibes and wishing you all the smoothest recovery possible.
Your surgery progress has been awesome. You obviously are very determined. So glad to see your post..

  3. Looks like you are 5 days post op...at that stage, I was still on liquids/full fluids.
But when I did end up eating actual food at the minced stage 3 weeks post op (i skipped the pureed stage on my own volition cuz it grossed me out), I waited 10 to 15 minutes between 1-2 bites. Sometimes I forgot, but then the pain in my chest would remind me.
I'm just over 8 months post op, and I still take a long time to eat, but I do about 10 minutes between 3-5 bites now.
You'll learn what your pace should be like...your body will tell you.
How do you get used to cold food? I mean obviously if. It takes so long to eat all your food after the first bite is going to be cold.

  4. And I'm down 65 lbs. I'm finally below 300 lbs, and I couldn't be happier. I haven't been this weight in ten years. Hell, I haven't even been close to it since 2012. I know I'm going to continue the weight loss too.
My highest weight was 427 lbs. April 2018. My weight on surgery day was 360.8. I weighed myself yesterday morning and was 295.2.
    Congratulations on your journey

Track everything you eat and drink then you can get with the nutritionist and show them what you have been doing and go from there.Tracking is an absolute must for me.

  6. I'm tentatively scheduled for RNY on July 2, so I'll be quietly lurking in the shadows on this group. I can be like the a very distant cousin in your little family LOL

I'm a teacher, so my bariatric team knew that I wanted a summer surgery. I'll be done with all of my requirements Monday April 29, so I'm a little ahead of the game.

    Good luck to us all!

  8. Sorry, this is not accurate. With my insurance, you needed to have a BMI over 40 OR have a BMI over 35 with comorbidities. If you're paying yourself, you may have a lower BMI. I have never heard of the 100 lbs. above your "ideal" weight statistic. Could you please quote your source?
I was told that insurance companies won't approve anyone who isn't 100 lbs overweight for weight loss surgery.

  9. You're really in a bad place and I am absolutely sure you had to go through the psychiatric exam and process before being given the green light for your surgery.
The classes before surgery are always informative so I think what they said just didn't stick with you.
I had the sleeve surgery 3 years ago and do to reflux disease getting worse I am having RNY revision surgery on July 16th.
I don't expect it to be a walk in the park and I know exactly what to expect.
Maybe I look at it differently but I never really ran my day to day life on the food in my life.
I think that you might greatly benefit from seeking help with your mindset.
I am sure that it's affecting your whole family and your quality of life.
Instead of being miserable all the time find an outlet other than food to think about.
    Good luck to you

  10. [emoji871]️ My surgery is tomorrow too. I just had to wash off all the antiseptic wipes because I forgot no shaving 24 hr rule and shaved in the shower tonight! [emoji20] I was itching all over. I am wide awake and have to be at the hospital for 5:30 am HST. No sleep for me tonight either I guess. Prayers for all of us!
Good luck with your surgery and your journey afterwards.

  11. I totally understand , somehow what I thought a 70 lb. weight loss would look like doesn’t coincide with what I DO look like and obviously I am looking at how much longer I have to go instead of where I have come from. I also don’t believe it when people tell me how good I look . When someone compliments me I rattle off how much more I still have to go. I wish I could accept my success. Sometimes all I see is a wrinkly neck and sagging skin... but there are really good days as well.. is still never go back and the good way out weighs the bad. All we can do is change what we can and accept the flaws and not expect perfection .
I have learned the best response to the compliments that I don't think I deserve yet is to just say Thank you...

  12. When I began this journey at the beginning of 2018 I was 426 pounds. Can't tell you measurements because all my clothes were in X's and not inches. But for reference, I was in a 5x shirt from Casual Male. I only wore sweatpants and those were also a 5x. People only saw me in clothes and the comment I often heard was that I carried my weight well. Being 6'1" I had the advantage of being tall and heavy vs short and heavy. It was all an illusion.
Medically I was prediabetic, on CPAP, could only sleep on my back, had knee pain and sweated like a frog fresh out of the pond in any weather over 72 degrees.
7 months post surgery and I am down 139 pounds. My A1C is 4, off the CPAP, I can sleep on my side, I can walk all day and not have knee pain...unfortunatley I still sweat a lot.
My physical appearance has changed in visible ways. Prior to surgery, I use to measure my weight loss and gain by how close I was to my steering wheel. If I was rubbing it then it was a bad week, if I could fit my hand between my belly and the wheel it was a good week (I avoided scales, I knew I was fat and honestly just wanted to get by in life). I look down at my steering wheel now and I see the marks where my belt scratched up the leather. Now there are a good 10 inches between me and the steering wheel. I can get in a car accident and not worry that the airbag is going to kill me.
I can see the weight loss in my face:
    facial.jpg.38641eb93be5bb084e9c060beaa6a25c.jpg
I also see the weight loss around my body. My shoulders are boney, my arms have lots of skin, my butt sags, the skin just hangs everywhere.
I'm down to a 2x and my waist is in a 50 pant which needs a belt. I hold these clothes out in front of me as I'm about to put them on and I say to myself, "There is no way this will fit me" or "Boy this is gonna look tight" and the clothes fits perfect. Not tight and hides my sag well.
Overall I don't want to sound like I'm not delighted, but I'm realizing just how large I was...and honestly still am.
I wish I were brave enough to take a photo so I could show you what I mean, but I can't believe after all this weight coming off I'm still so big. I sit and there is a huge belly still in my lap. My thighs are huge. Maybe as I continue to lose weight these two areas will decrease dramatically, but it seems like there must be 150 lbs there alone.
I never thought for a moment that after my surgery I was going to have a thin, fit beach body. I hoped though that it would be less fat looking when dressed and in public. I almost feel like I want to tell people "Yeah, but just half a year ago I was..."
Omg you're such an inspiration..All of us know we are overweight I have a problem with the word fat.lol
But until like you we actually look at the size we were it's hard to really take it in.
You have lost a whole person and your doing great things for your health.
    Those are absolutely amazing milestones.
You look awesome and should be proud of yourself!!
I don't know what your goal weight is but I would bet that you are at least at the halfway point.
Keep your eyes on the goal and keep your chin up!!
I am having the RNY REVISION SURGERY on July 16th. I had sleeve surgery will be 3 years ago October 25th. I lost 87 lbs and have arm skin enough for wings but I have severe GERD and it has gotten worse since the sleeve. I still want to lose at least 85 more lbs. Terrified of the hanging skin. But thankfully there's surgery for skin removal after losing all the weight.
With any luck my insurance companies will pay for at least part of it.
Anyway I wish you the best of luck with your journey.

  13. Laura,
I am waiting for approval from my insurance companies for the RNY revision surgery from the sleeve surgery 2 1/2 years ago.
I never thought once I was told that all my medical problems would be solved with the sleeve surgery to consult any of my regular Drs.I thought that these surgeon's do this everyday so they know what is the best way to go.
So I just went with the surgeon's suggestion that the sleeve was best for me.
I had severe reflux disease, type 2 diabetes, HBP,High cholesterol, asthma and arthritis.
My diabetes is gone, HBP,High cholesterol are gone. Reflux was gone for 6wks and now is worse than ever since the surgery.
    I lost 87 lbs and went from size 22w to 24 w to a 12 ladies.
My suggestion is if you have medical issues consult each of the Drs.then weigh your options.
    Good luck

  14. I’m 7 days post op. My revision from sleeve to bypass was March 23rd. I had really bad GERD even with liquids. I’m on Clear Liquids right now and I’ve had tea which usually causes an issue, but so far so good. I don’t feel that burning in my throat are feel like gagging anymore. So I’m glad I did it. RNY all the way![emoji6]
Thanks and congratulations on your revision.
I can't wait for the RNY revision surgery approval from my insurance companies.

  15. Chances are that the Gerd would not resolve and being a single parent I don't have the luxury for being down for too long
Also there has been a study that shows without the revision the hernia will return in 2-3 years

I had Severe GERD before my sleeve and a hernia repair when my sleeve was done..
Within 2 months my hernia came back and my GERD has gotten far worse than I ever imagined.
I am absolutely miserable and I'm taking 10 pills a day and zofran and GI COCKTAIL every day as opposed to 2 pills and occasionally zofran b4 sleeve.
I'm waiting for approval from my insurance companies to get approval for the RNY revision surgery.
I'm doing it for the GERD and tons of people are also having the revision surgery for the same reason.

  16. Being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse (impregnated at 12),
I managed to overcome many buried years of trauma. I keep telling
myself that I can do this, too.
It feels good to have power now, particularly after having a long history
of it being denied to me. Those pedophilic bastards!
I'm encouraged by the kind words of support so far. I hope at some
time soon (in this forum) I will be able to be more a giver-of-support and
less of a taker-of-support. For now, though, I will allow myself the guilty pleasure of
"receiving" until I can reciprocate, in a genuine way, all of the kindness offered me.
We all need tips, encouragement and just an outlet to vent with ppl that are going through the same process that we are.
Your not being a taker you're accepting the friendship, kindness and carrying of an amazing community of which you are a part of now.
You've been through hell and back and we are your new support group.
It's easier to accept tips and help sometimes from people you're not familiar with because you don't have to worry about being judged or expected to do anything other than what you can do.
Good luck with your journey and your surgery.
