  1. I think everyone's got some good points...I'm going to wait and go back on Tuesday instead of Monday. I feel perfectly fine to go back tomorrow OTHER than the gas pains! If it weren't for those terrible shooting pains that go up into my shoulder (I AM NOW GETTING THOSE), then I'd feel like I never even had surgery. Every now and then I have a little twinge at the incision sites...but for the most part, listen to your body--it will tell you when. I am usually a pretty big whimp and usually milk illnesses for all they are worth, but honestly, the more I am up and doing things, the better I feel. I am by no means an athletic or active type person--I am SO lazy, it's not even funny--but my gas pains feel better when I'm moving around...plus, my incisions get sore when I've been sitting/laying too long. Suggestion: if you have a recliner-sleep and sit on that for a while rather than on a bed or couch--it helps to get from the lying/sitting position to standing position...it's nice in the hospital when you have the bed to help, but at home, the recliner is a good substitute.

  2. WOW...such varieties--I think I've figure out that its gas and surgery pains. I only wish I was burping more...then I might at least feel like the gas was escaping...my tummy is hard as a rock and bloated like crazy...more at times than at others. I've had no trouble walking--some pain when I first stand up but then it usually subsides. I take the liquid vicodin about twice a day rather than every 4 hours. I'm walking to mailbox several times per day and then went to Walmart and even Home Depot. Took Milk of Magnesia to get a BM going--wow...that worked...but still bloated. Never had shoulder pain--lots of back pain that same day of surgery, but after that, it's been okay...thankfully. HOT TEA is a GOD SEND to me!!!! Soothes heartburn, gas pains, aches, etc!!! EARL GREY with a touch of lemon is making me feel human again!!!!!

Diet for Post Op weeks 1-3: Choose 2 oz. of cream of wheat, creamed Soup, pudding or yogurt for break, lunch and dinner. Throughout the day, try to get in 8 oz. of Protein drink. Also, can have 2 oz. of broth, tea, Water, coffee, crystal light, sf Jello, sf popsicles, etc. about 15 min after anything else.

I'm definitely not starving...but geez, missing food at times :0( but I know I'm not doing all this for nothing!!!

  3. I had mine on Thursday (3/20) and I'm feeling okay to go back on Monday I think. I went to Walmart today and was a bit worn out...but I guess it totally depends on the nature of your job too. I'm hoping I can go to church tomorrow and then school (work) on Monday. If not, I know for sure by Tuesday I'll be able to be back.

  4. I think I'm mostly feeling surgery pains...or gas at times--although, I am starting to pass some (last time I was so happy about this was when I had my c-section-12 yrs ago)...think I'm gonna start on some milk of magnesia--my release paperwork says to if I haven't had a BM in 2-3 days and this is the 2nd day post op--if I don't have one today, it's MOM tomorrow--think that will help with the bloating!!!

  5. Hang in there...my insurance took about a week or so...with the holiday too, it might have gotten delayed...hang in there...it will be so worth it...not that I'm like seeing results yet, but all I know is that the recovery so far is not nearly as bad as I was anticipating...lucky for me--cuz I'm the same way--I'm out of sick leave at school, so if I'm off, I get my check docked several hundered dollars :0(

  6. I am a teacher in Goodyear, AZ. A co-worker had the RNY done and she SWEARS to me that I'll be fine to come back--I am having mine on Thursday of next week and plan to be back on Tuesday. I know many of you will think I'm crazy, but I teach high school and the largest class I have is 24 and they can kind of be put on auto-pilot...so...she swears to me that with her helping out in the classroom, I'll be fine. My sister also teaches next door to me, so that will be a huge help.

  7. It's my understanding that the reason for liquid diet prior to surgery besides weight loss and preparation for the post op dieting is to make the liver leaner. When the liver is not as fatty, it is easier for the doctor to see while operating and easier for him to perform a less complicated surgery...which in my opinion is important. I am on day 2 of the liquid diet and I am able to have sugar free Jello, popsicles, broth (using chicken noodle Soup instead of plain broth cuz that is just nasty)--but you can also add seasonings to the broth to flavor it up (i got some from my favorite chines restaurant)...carnation instant Breakfast mixed with skim milk and powdered milk...it's not too bad...my little treat is to throw a few of the noodles and a few pieces of meat from the chicken noodle soup...that's my splurge for the day!!! it helps and I don't think I'll endanger myself too badly.

  8. Hey--I'm right there with you! I started mine yesterday and you've made it longer than I did with wanting to cheat! I think I'm gonna have to start have a few noodles in my chicken broth because I just need a little substance! It's not so much the idea that I'm starving or craving--it's just that I WANT something other than liquid and jello!!!! I don't even know if I'm supposed to have Campbell's chicken noodle Soup broth because it's not truly just broth--but I hate just regular ol broth---but i figure it's better than burgers and fries--at least as far as the surgeon will be concerned. I'm waiting for my doctor's office to open so I can call them to ask. Anyway--write me any time if you're sufferin'--I'll suffer with you! When is your surgery? Mine is Thursday, the 20th!

  9. I am having surgery on March 20 and my surgeon's office called last Friday to schedule an Esophageal study for me. However, the nurse couldn't really tell me what it was. Did anyone else have to have this done? If so, was it painful? What does it entail? I couldn't really find anything definitive on the Web about it.

  10. Hi, my name is Nikki. I am 34 and waiting anxiously to get banded on March 20. I can't wait but have so many questions, fears, and hopes. I found this forum and hope to start finding the answers and put some of my fears to rest. I am a high school reading teacher in Arizona, married and have 3 beautiful daughters. I can't wait to be healthy and thin again!!!
